No New Blades Bid for Waghorn
Monday, 23rd Jul 2018 11:08

TWTD understands Town have not received a second bid from Sheffield United for striker Martyn Waghorn, despite Blades manager Chris Wilder claiming an offer had been lodged with the Blues on Saturday and that they were awaiting a response.

TWTD revealed on Friday that Town had quickly turned down a bid of approaching £5 million around three weeks ago and we understand that remains the only offer received by the Blues.

The Blades are one of a number of clubs eyeing Waghorn but are the only ones to firm up their interest so far.

In addition to Sheffield United, Derby County, Middlesbrough and Birmingham have also been eyeing the 28-year-old, while Nottingham Forest have been linked.

Waghorn is effectively contracted to the Blues for two more seasons, his current deal running to next summer with the club having an option to keep him for a further year.

Speaking last week, Town manager Paul Hurst, coincidentally born in Sheffield but brought up an Owls fan, said he had told Waghorn he wants him to stay at Portman Road, while owner Marcus Evans is also believed to want to keep hold of the £200,000 bargain signing from Rangers.

Waghorn, who swiftly became a hugely popular figure at Town following that August 2017 switch, scoring 16 goals and recording 11 assists last season, is understood to be happy at the club with his family, including his parents, having settled in Suffolk since his move.

I did think from Wilder's comments that he was just talking about their original bid. According to him we've not actually turned it down, just not responded.

Chris Wilder's a p***k. How are his comments about having a bid in for him not deemed as publicly trying to tap him up? They should be reported to the FA. I don't see how moving to Sheff Utd could even benefit Waghorn anyway, other than being geographically closer to the north east. Time to offer him a new deal and build our team around him. If we're to ever have success, we need to stop becoming a selling club and add to our key players like him.

Hopefully that's the end of this saga.

Wilder just saying things to appease his own fans, that's all. Waghorn very much a Town player and assuming things go OK into the new season we will have some time to sort out a new contract for him.

The thing that really gets my back up is; why do we appear to be the only club in the championship that as soon as a transfer figure of more than 1 million is mentioned we are immediately ruled out? yet all these other clubs are capable of putting in bids of 4 or 5 million and in some cases much more. Are we always going to be the poor hard up relation?

I think it was Tarrico who once said he hated Sheff Utd, he might of well been on to something!

@itfc58 Unfortuantely the harsh truth is we arent a rich club anymore, yes we have a great history and infrastructure. But our budget is within the bottom 5 clubs. Sad but true, just glad we are taking the route of signing the best of the best from lower leagues.

The only thing that worries me here is the lack of any comment from Waghorn himself. I assume that not only have Sheff U made a bid they would also of talked to the players representative (off the record I'm sure) about personal terms and one can only assume he's going to be being offered more than his current deal. If we want to keep him nows the time to be putting a new deal on the table otherwise why would he want to stay here for 2 more years being paid less than he can get elsewhere.

itfc58 Much of the league has parachute payments - so they can.
Of those that don't have parachute payments several have a larger income than us - so they might.
The rest are the poor relations of the division.
It appears several clubs may be hit with a player embargo and that is something we certainly don't need. We are competing with vast sums of money in parachute payments.

Woodbridgian why should Waghorn make any public comment? People don't usually talk loudly about wanting to change employers. I always find it irritating that some footballers find it necessary to do so.

I can only hope that Waggy wants to stay and isn't tempted by any offer. We know he has just moved his wife, son and parents to Ipswich so hopefully they are all settled.

It just needs ME to give him a longer contract with more wages. If he can do it for Bart surely he can do it for our best striker.

Our team is depleted as it is through injuries as is shown by the pre-season games. We definitely need Waggy here this season.

This seems a funny saga, hopefully it ends in Waggy staying

I would not be that attracted if I was Waggy. ITFC is a far better place. If it was a premier team then that make it a different matter.

itfc58 .... Sheff Utd recently sold midfielder Brooks for £12 million to Bournemouth .... that's why they can splash some cash ....

Bristol City have sold their two of their key assets (Reid and Flint) for 15 million .... not surprising they could spend a few quid on Webster.

The money has helped us buy Edwards and now Harrison it seems. That's good business especially if we end up keeping Waghorn on top of Bialkowski.

Bluebllod : a bit harsh calling Wilder a pr@@k after what he did with Sheff u last season -made Ipswich look poor -Sheff U 2 st season back in this lg they did very well-I think Wags will go -Sheff u will up their bid with add ons -Wags will go

If we want even a half decent season, Waghorn and Bialkowski are worth 15 points for giving us that extra margin in important games. We'd need a player to be top drawer and hit the ground running to replace either, so common sense says keep them.

Sling yer hook Blades. If Waggy is going to go ( which I suspect he ultimately will), then Sheffield Utd is hardly a “ step up” . I think Waggy is hoping Boro will come in for him.

@Happyman

I didn't call him a pr**k because I don't think he's a good manager. I rate him very highly and think he's done a great job everywhere he's been. I just don't think he should be able to come out and say that he's bid for Martyn Waghorn and awaiting a response from Ipswich. If that's not trying to tap him up then I don't know what is.
