Town Again Linked With Accrington Striker
Sunday, 29th Jul 2018 10:40

Town are again being linked with a move for Accrington Stanley striker Kayden Jackson.

According to The Sun on Sunday, Blues boss Paul Hurst is set to offer £1.25 million for the 24-year-old, who was previously mentioned in connection with the Blues earlier in the month, an offer it is claimed the League One club would find difficult to rebuff.

Stanley were previously reported to have turned down bids from Rotherham and Peterborough, while Preston have also been linked.

Jackson, who scored 16 goals in 48 starts and one sub appearance last season, previously played for Hurst, albeit briefly, at Grimsby during a loan spell in the first half of the 2016/17 season before the Town boss moved on to Shrewsbury in the October.

Bradford-born Jackson started his professional career with Swindon following success in a 2013 Win a Pro Contract competition run by Samsung when a player with Albion Sports in the Northern Counties East League Division One.

While with the Robins, he had spells on loan at Swindon Supermarine and Oxford City, prior to stints with Tamworth, Wrexham and Barnsley before his loan with Grimsby and his permanent switch to his current club last summer.

Stanley chairman Andy Holt has confirmed that the Tykes would receive a percentage of the fee they would receive should Jackson move on.

Jackson, who is 5ft 11in tall, is contracted until the summer of 2019 and can play in wide roles in addition to operating down the centre.

Speaking yesterday, Hurst admitted that the Blues would have to move quickly to recruit a replacement for Martyn Waghorn if, as seems likely, last season’s 16-goal top scorer departs before the window closes on August 9th.

Derby currently lead the likes of Middlesbrough, Sheffield United, Birmingham and Nottingham Forest in the chase for the 28-year-old.

“I think we’d have to because what we can’t do is leave ourselves short and at the minute we feel we need players in anyway. If there was to be another departure, then clearly that adds to the need to get players in," he said.

The Blues boss also hinted that he may be looking at bringing in more frontmen in any case: “He hasn’t gone anywhere yet, so it may be that we’re trying to sign people anyway.”

Meanwhile, Blues target Conor Townsend completed his move from Scunthorpe to West Brom yesterday for a fee reported to be £750,000. Town and Hull City had previously had offers turned down by the Iron.

Yes please. More young talent from the lower divisions. This is the only way we can progress. Fairly obvious now that MM never wanted to introduce young lower league players,as the 5 point plan and must have clashed with Marcus on this issue.

Looking at his career up to now.. one good season.. 1.25 seems a little steep.. I'd keep waggy given the choice but can't see that happening.. Ellis looks good but I would rather get someone like Bradshaw from Barnsley if we're replacing waghorn.. proven at this level with 12 for a relegated team?.. hopefully this lad is to add competition and numbers rather than a waggy replacement...

hope we don't pay £1.25 million and sell Waghorn cheap .

It was reported wee would pay 1.6m for Harrison, that was double what we actually paid. I would say a similar figure would get jackson through the door. Young enough to improve more, and Hurst obviously is clued up on him. Added advantage of being able to play out wide. Ideal stand by if waggy goes.

I still think the Exeter striker is worth a punt.

Looks like we will get him regardless of waghorn...

So CB & ST this week...

Still need another CB (For injury's)

So we need

4 ST/CF
2 LW/LM
2 RW/RM
4 CAM/CM/CDM
2 LB
4 CB
2 RB
3 GK's

That's will do nicely & cover in each pesition

Great another league 1 signing, just what we want, selling last seasons top scorer and replacing with a striker unproven at this level. We are up against Rotherham and Peterborough though, so we might stand a chance of winning on this one. Central defenders of more importance now as we only have 1 RECOGNIZED cb in chambers at the minute(and most people over the last few seasons have been slaughtering him) proven at this level. I know I'm going to get downmarked for this but I wasn't expecting ph to sign/bid/link with so many league 1/2 players it is simply not going to work. I don't mind a few and would welcome tilt as we need players like him, just can't see point of bidding for lad at Scunthorpe who's name I can't even remember when we have kenlock/Knudsen

@bluesnake/bluenago, which points exactly do you not agree with in my previous post

We don't have the finance for big signings. Hurst is doing right by ME and working how he knows best, picking up hungry young players who deserve a chance at a higher level. Otherwise , it will be ; loans, frees, and journeymen.

Timkatieadamitfc -

Would you rather us buy run of the mill, middle aged championship players / Premier League ‘pros' who are likely to have a hurt ego from dropping down a division and wonder who was to blame for it other then themselves.

Or

Young, hungry lower league players wanting to improve in their profession, raise the standard of their game and reach the very top of the pyramid against the odds?

Have a think and get back to me before posting senseless statements. Thanks.

To me this all boils down to are we going to hold out for £7-8m outright for Waghorn, are we going to fold and let him go for £5.5-6m or something. I fear the latter tbh.

Rather go for Bradshaw at Barnsley!

We do Shropshire, potentially, as the owner is very wealthy, it's just that ME chooses to inflict austerity footy on our club and run it on a shoestring budget meaning any chance of meaningful progress/promotion stands as close to nil as is possible to imagine. Still to some though #MEisfaultless

I am a Tom Bradshaw fan too-----thought he had left Barnsley?

Toxteth - I agree ME is a rich owner and should be funding us to promotion. However, he has been bitten by funding Keane and Jewell. One of the main reasons for Hursts appointment was his ability to bring in young hungry players from lower divisions, with no egos, lower wages, lower transfers. He worked miracles at Shrewsbury doing just this. Judging by yesterday's example of a youthful team, the future looks bright.

I am all for this as a signing but ideally south side of £1mill in case he turns out to be a flop! However, my bigger concern is selling Waggy. Do we really think we can get a better player than him if we sell him? Would it not make more sense to offer him a new deal? I would rather he left on a free in a year's time than see him go to Derby etc and help them get promoted. Where did selling Mings, Cresswell, Murphy or Wickham get us?!

I for one like the way that PH is thinking. He's aiming for a particular style of play, and sees a few departures being able to fund the resources to give him players that fit the mould.

It's what Eddie Howe did at Bournemouth. It's what happened at Huddersfield.

A £6.8M profit on Waggy (who I like but does not seem to quite fit the system) is really good business.

In case you disagree, think back over the last few years. Could you put a polite name on the 'style' of football we've played?

04willr added 12:19 - Jul 29
@bressinghamblue - you make a good argument and I completely agree PH is trying to bring in players that fit into his blueprint. However, I struggle to see how selling somebody who scored 16 goals and clearly is a quality player would be of benefit. Why can't we go for players like the Accrington chap and keep waggy? Its not like waggy is an MM attritional hoof ball player akin to Jonathan Douglas. We've already made close to 5mill from selling an average defender and an academy player plus no longer have Dave Mc on our books. Surely we don't need the money.

I think he will fit into the position that Freddie Sears played in yesterday and hopefully provide a few goals along the way

It's refreshing that town are being linked with young and upcoming players from the lower leagues rather than journeymen footballers or other teams injury rudden cast offs

Who's to say this is Waggys replacement? We know nothing yet. Might be in addition to, might be if Waggy goes someone else comes in as well but no doubt IF he does go that money will be spread throughout the team, don't expect 1 big marquee to replace him.

Boro were linked with Ojo today which will be pricey so perhaps they have moved on.

Derby's move depends on Vydra going and Leeds who were due to be his destination look like signing Bamford from Boro instead.

As usual some people just whinge. Waghorn hasn't gone yet and the club are clearly holding out for his value. This bloke hasn't signed yet but never mind. Let's moan anyway.

Our other signings look decent, why should this guy not be?

Let's give the manager and his players a chance before we all lose it, show some class perhaps?

I'd prefer Bradshaw. That being said I can't say I've seen Gwion or Ellie before and been impressed so far. #anewera

When speaking about football, people tend to forget that with almost any other job in the whole world, you have to start at the bottom and work your way to the top. You don't drop out of the womb a CEO.

Why then does everyone assume that having players coming from a lower division must automatically make us whack? I'd far rather have players on an ascendancy who are happy to be improving their careers as opposed to a load of duffers.
