Derby's Waghorn Move Dealt Blow
Monday, 30th Jul 2018 14:07

Derby’s move to sign Blues striker Martyn Waghorn has been dealt a blow after Matej Vydra’s proposed £11 million switch from the Rams to Leeds United broke down.

Vydra was unable to agree personal terms at Elland Road, while the Czech international is also believed to have been less than keen to move to a club which finished below Derby in the Championship last season.

The Rams have been leading the chase for Waghorn’s signature having made an offer understood to be an initial £5 million rising to £8 million after clauses last week.

However, speaking on Saturday, Blues manager Paul Hurst said neither they nor any of the other interested parties have yet met Town’s valuation on last season’s 16-goal top scorer, who was training with the rest of the squad at Playford Road this morning.

Derby’s move for Waghorn had been understood to be dependent on the Rams offloading Vydra as they are under pressure to stay within Financial Fair Play limits.

In addition to Derby, Middlesbrough, Sheffield United and Birmingham are also interested in Waghorn, who joined the Blues for £250,000 from Rangers last August, while Nottingham Forest have also been linked.

Boro may be in an improved position to join the Rams and Blades in making a bid for Waghorn with Patrick Bamford now closing in on a £7 million move from Teesside to Leeds.

Meanwhile, it’s reported that Town are close to signing Accrington Stanley striker Kayden Jackson in addition to his defensive team-mate Janoi Donacien.

However, Accrington are yet to accept an offer for Jackson, 24, who was training with the League One club this morning, although it is expected he will move on before the transfer window closes on August 9th.

Town have been linked with the former Barnsley man on a number of occasions in recent weeks and we understand have firm interest in the Bradford-born frontman even if a deal is yet to be agreed. QPR are among a number of other clubs also interested.

If Waghorn ended up leaving and presuming Kayden Jackson signs, I'd like us to go for Marcus Maddison from Peterborough. Think he's got the creativity between midfield and attack that we've been lacking. Could probably get him for £3m. With Hurst seeming to favour a 4-2-3-1 formation then Harrison, Garner and Jackson should probably be enough strikers with Folami and Morris coming through.

Unfortunately he'll end up at Middlesbrough, unless Bamford fails his medical!

first of all let me make it clear I'm a Waghorn fan who without doubt was our best outfield player last season and all think being equall I'd like him to stay, but there are two elephants in the room here, firstly it's clear a Waghorn has told Hurst he wants to go if he hasn't why wouldn't he of said that in his interview and why wouldn't he of played him at least for sometime in the last 2 friendlys ? The other one is will Waghorn produce last years form again this season, which is a big call some people saying Bamford was a one season wonder we'll Waghorns previous career hasn't been all at the level seen last season either. Personally I think he's all but gone and the important thing is we just get it sorted well before the window slams shut can't risk another last day Murphy situation

At the risk of being minued into oblivion. Derby are having to be careful to not get a ffp embargo, QPY have been fined 42M and a transfer ban. As I have said before and will say again this is why we are lucky to have an owner who wont break the ffp rules

The fact is he has made it clear that he wants to leave - so why do you all think this is good news?

Great if he stays, ideal partner for Harrison up front, the lad ran himself into the ground on Sat, impressed as I was, he could be even more impressive working with the wag.

OK, we don't know the full story, and nor should we. But I don't think we should knock Waghorn over these transfer rumours. We know other clubs have shown interest, not surprisingly. But the general message seems to be Waghorn hasn't asked for a move - even if he is probably tempted by better terms elsewhere. You can't blame him for that. Given his professional attitude to date, I am prepared to believe that if he doesn't move on (which I hope) he will be a fully committed ITFC player when the season starts.

I rate MW and think we should make it worth his while staying. If it's not good enough so be it

Waggy mustbevworth £10 million in todays market - the most goals plus assists of any player last season. Tell M'Boro that's the price plusa promotion percentage cause he could be the final piece in the jigsaw for them. They've got Aiden Flint the man mountain now too.

This is the part where I'm supposed to go "Oh no, how tragic". I won't. Instead I will laugh at Derby. Ha!

Bamford worth £10 million? God give me strength. Where do they get there valuation's from. If that's the value of a over rated pansy boy then waggy is worth £12 million period.

Turning down the McGoldrick offer from Leicester was the pivotal moment in our recent history. If that team had had £7 million spent on it we could well have gone up. The Waghorn situation feels the same.£5 million rising to £8million for MW is ludicrously good value for us. Most people felt he was overpriced at £250k 12 months ago.

Have a look at his career stats. Last season was his one good one. I'm pretty dubious about him doing it again. We have to back the scouts to find a better player than him with £5 million to spend IMO.

Keeping him is as big a gamble as selling him, is my point.
