Boro Set to Win Waghorn Race as Bid Accepted
Sunday, 5th Aug 2018 10:23

Middlesbrough appear to have won the race to sign Blues striker Martyn Waghorn with Town having accepted a bid from the Teessiders. TWTD was first to reveal that Boro were chasing the 28-year-old at the end of June.

Sky Sports reported that Middlesbrough had had their offer accepted earlier this morning and TWTD can confirm that Teesside is indeed Waghorn's destination.

Talks regarding personal terms are now under way with last season’s 16-goal top scorer and Boro hope to get the deal done prior to Tuesday night’s match against Sheffield United at the Riverside.

Speaking last night, manager Paul Hurst admitted Town would have to accept a fee slightly below their valuation which suggests the offer is somewhere around the £6 million mark up front plus further top-ups.

Previously bids of an initial £5 million from Derby and a bid slightly below that from Sheffield United had been rebuffed.

The Rams had looked the favourites to land the former Leicester, Sunderland and Wigan man but their plans suffered a blow when Matej Vydra's sale to Leeds fell through, a deal they are believed to have needed to complete if they were to sign Waghorn in order to stay within Financial Fair Play limits.

The switch will see South Shields-born Waghorn, who cost the Blues just £250,000 when he signed from Rangers last August, return to his native North-East and almost certainly double his wages. The Ibrox club will receive 10 per cent of the profit the Blues make on the deal.

Town will use the cash from Waghorn's sale to make additions to their squad before Thursday's deadline with Shrewsbury pair Toto Nsiala and Jon Nolan expected to confirm their moves on Monday.

The Blues are also chasing Blackpool centre-half Curtis Tilt, who was left out of the Seasiders' team yesterday, and Accrington striker Kayden Jackson, while Cardiff's Omar Bogle, another frontman, is a loan target.

Sad news - Martyn surely worth the £8M having proven himself at Championship level. Still, thanks Martyn for a great season and 100% commitment, good luck except when you play us. Now for PH to use the funds wisely.

Some might see this as a backward step, I personally see this as a good bit of business. Not convinced with Waghorn's career stats to date that he would have been anything other than a one season wonder. Let's hope these funds get reinvested in the team.

Good to him he's been a loyal servant in his year like Bart without him we would've gone down. To move home and double yer wages is a chance no one can turn down & he's increased his chances of making the Prem. A good deal for all I for one wish him good luck just not against us!!

Knew he was too good a signing to keep hold of long term.

Really liking all the lower league signings that Hurst is making but think we need to go for someone with a bit of championship experience now to replace Waggy - maybe time to get Tom Bradshaw and not another loanee.

Not so happy with £6mil... but hopefully that will now give us time for Hurst to bring in some new talent we are lacking in some positions. Interesting to see who comes in to replace him

Was pretty obvious this would happen after they sold Bamford to Leeds. We need the money to strengthen the squad in other areas. Martyn himself will probably be very happy back in the north east, and on more money. Good move for all concerned really.

Good player, but only one really outstanding season paid £250000, £6m upfront with add on's,it's a no brainer really, AS LONG AS PH gets the majority to spend.

Considering what other players have gone for we're underselling him. Accrington can hold on to their striker, asking for an ‘unreasonable' fee and rightly so yet we're selling for a lesser price???

Agree with Lightningboy, Bradshaw would be a good addition.

Good Business, need more firepower that's for sure so hopefully Hurst has his target(s) in his sights and can soon pull that trigger!

All the best Waggy . You deserve your big move and the fact that it'll be your home town Club - fabulous for you . Couldn't be more pleased for you !

Fantastic piece of business from Towns point of view now let's go and get those players in that we have been after.

I'm sorry but I'm confused as to why the word loyalty is being thrown around? We've given him a chance in the championship and after ONE season he's chosen to bail on us?

Don't get me wrong, I'm pleased with the fee but I don't think leaving after one season is ‘loyal'

Will be sad to see waghorn go, but it is great business for the club. Decent player at this level but think we got a good deal. Need the two lads from shrewsbury to sign, get tilt in and a decent striker to replace waghorn and i will be happy! Good luck waggy all the best. Coyb

Sad to see him go but whichever way I look at it, it's a no brainer. Good business on our part buy for 250k sell for at least 24x that value. He, after a good season gets to move back 'home' with a significant pay rise. We look to use some of the funds to bring in new players.
Some might not like it but it's the way we have always had to do business, we have to sell to balance the books and then reinvest any excess after. We did this back in the Burley era and now is no different.

Thought it would be Middlesborough after selling Bamford. Still don't understand how Bamford is worth more, but £6M with add ons should take us closer to the £8M figure we were hoping for. Thanks for everything you've done Waggy, but it's in the best interest for both parties. He'll be closer to his family too which also makes sense. All the best, Wags! Now we need a replacment and I'm sure PH will bring in some good additions. Will be a very exciting last few days of this window.

Nsiala, Nolan, Tilt, maybe Jackson or another striker (hopefully not Bogle) and another winger I think might be coming in.

I was born and raised in Haverhill, if someone offered to double my wages to move back there I would tell them to stick it , and Middlesbrough is worse !!!

I don't think Hurst had much of a say in this one!

I should imagine that Evans wanted this deal done.

As long as the money is reinvested in the team, a good bit of business.

£6m up front, with extras rising to £8m would be a good deal. He was great last season, but the shape & style Hurst has in mind for the team would not really get the best from him. To be clear, Waghorn is a hard working player with plenty of ability & would be an asset in any of the forward positions because he is capable of doing a decent job in any of them, but he is not necessarily going to be better than a younger alternative than that Hurst recruits specifically to play in that role. Harrison does a different type of job than Waghorn would in the loan centre forward position, maybe he's not as good a footballer overall, but maybe, for how Hurst sets up his sides, Harrison offers more to the team as a whole from that position.
Good luck to Waggy, seems like a decent guy. He's at an age when a good contract Is important for a player & his family; he'll no doubt get one from Middlesbrough. He'll give them far more over a season than Bamford would have.

Can't say i'm overly sad waghorn is leaving yes its only with a few days of the transfer window to go but Hurst will have a replacement lined up already unlike when we sold murphy a few years back, he only scored & created all those goals last season because our attacking players were non existent looking forward to a busy week of transfer news!!

Waghorn has had a nomadic career and is the footballing equivalent of The Littlest Hobo. He isn't a one club man and will go where the money takes him. Not a criticism as it's a short career but there's little point in holding onto a player who's heart isn't really in it. If it means adding funds to Hurst's rebuilding then it's a good deal for all concerned.

blu_dru added 10:56 - Aug 5
Can't blame waghorn, he never asked to go, we are desperate for the money to get 4-5 players in, if he was "loyal" and turned down double his wages and chance to move home then we couldn't get the numbers we need.

Maybe as good as waghorn is/has been for us he just isn't an ideal fit in hursts plans.
