Boro Set to Win Waghorn Race as Bid Accepted
Sunday, 5th Aug 2018 10:23

Middlesbrough appear to have won the race to sign Blues striker Martyn Waghorn with Town having accepted a bid from the Teessiders. TWTD was first to reveal that Boro were chasing the 28-year-old at the end of June.

Sky Sports reported that Middlesbrough had had their offer accepted earlier this morning and TWTD can confirm that Teesside is indeed Waghorn's destination.

Talks regarding personal terms are now under way with last season’s 16-goal top scorer and Boro hope to get the deal done prior to Tuesday night’s match against Sheffield United at the Riverside.

Speaking last night, manager Paul Hurst admitted Town would have to accept a fee slightly below their valuation which suggests the offer is somewhere around the £6 million mark up front plus further top-ups.

Previously bids of an initial £5 million from Derby and a bid slightly below that from Sheffield United had been rebuffed.

The Rams had looked the favourites to land the former Leicester, Sunderland and Wigan man but their plans suffered a blow when Matej Vydra's sale to Leeds fell through, a deal they are believed to have needed to complete if they were to sign Waghorn in order to stay within Financial Fair Play limits.

The switch will see South Shields-born Waghorn, who cost the Blues just £250,000 when he signed from Rangers last August, return to his native North-East and almost certainly double his wages. The Ibrox club will receive 10 per cent of the profit the Blues make on the deal.

Town will use the cash from Waghorn's sale to make additions to their squad before Thursday's deadline with Shrewsbury pair Toto Nsiala and Jon Nolan expected to confirm their moves on Monday.

The Blues are also chasing Blackpool centre-half Curtis Tilt, who was left out of the Seasiders' team yesterday, and Accrington striker Kayden Jackson, while Cardiff's Omar Bogle, another frontman, is a loan target.

Good to see ME doing his usual and not backing the club. Had we kept Waghorn along with the new signings it would have shown some real intent. But as usual we are just his tax haven.

Will be sorry to see him leave as he is a good Pro and given us good service over the last season, however getting 6 million plus is a very good bit of business and nobody can argue with that.
As previous posters have stated he may not fit into the new set up.I'm sure Paul has all his new recruits in place and next Saturday the team will look different from yesterday one can only presume.
I think by the end of September the team will have adjusted to each other and also the playing formation.
Looking forward to the trip to Rotherham, long drive fo me and I'm sure it will be well worth it.

So, with hurst not even using up Webster fee(never mind all other monies coming in this summer and high wage earners like mcg leaving) are we to assume ph has got 6m to spend on players to strengthen. I very much doubt it.
It's one thing if the player doesn't want to play for us,but only wag horn hurst really know this, but I can't see how ANYONE can say this is good business as the bottom line is and I'm not being negative is that we will be buying an inferior player.
Also lots saying that he wouldn't produce last seasons form and it was just a one-off, which I accept is a valid point but what if he stayed and scored and set up more than last season, only time will tell but my feeling is he will be one of leading scorers this year, as long as they're not against us good luck mate and thanks for a GREAT season last year

Now let's see just how much we spend.

i hope we don't replace with a striker from lower leagues we wouldn't be happy if we replaced Bart with a lower league goaly Waghorn was best outfield player on our books due to not only his goals but his assists and general forward play and set plays losing alot here and replacing with several average looking players may hurt us but thats football nowdays he has been good for us and i would prefer we spend the money on a proper striker not 4 players after yesterday we need a proper striker not onr crom lower league most clubs have decent front men if you look at the championship teams lets concentrate on that position as sears is finished and garner may be gone to Harrison needs a proper striking partner

People saying ‘£6m + add ons'. I hope you're right, but I think it will be 6m Max on the nose. Hope I'm wrong.

For me, I'll only be happy if we get Tilt in as arguably we could've afforded the Shrews boys from the Webster money...

And a decent striker!! But who? Who will sell a decent striker at this stage?

I for one would never be sad to see a player go who chooses to leave us after one season. Don't get me wrong, I don't blame him and I think it's a good move all round. Somebody actually called him a “loyal servant” above! I guess that's the crazy world of football these days? Onwards and upwards and with this cash in the bank, hopefully Hurst will have his sights set on somebody a little better than Jackson or Bogle???

This is the deal I thought would happen. We would all have liked more than £6m but this is realistically what the market dictates and gives Hurst a few days to complete his squad. In his video, Evans made it clear that the new manager would have to generate his own funds from sales and Hurst has bitten the bullet and sold two of our better players and given our best player a pay rise to keep him. This all makes sense to me. One bad foul could end Waghorn's season and I'd rather have 3 or 4 new faces, each with the potential to go on and be a Premiership player. Besides, Waghorn wanted out and in my view was unlikley to repeat his brilliant season with that mindset.

As well as spending money on players you still have to add in the wages as well. Some posters seem to forget this factor possibly..!
Murphy had one good season never to be repeated, sad but true. It's a gamble most clubs have to take.I wish MW all the best and hope he has a good injury free season as long as he don't score against us.😥

In the current climate £6m is a steal. Let's hope the top-ups are good, obviously rely on Boro getting promotion - if that's the case i would hope for at least £2m extra.

Hopefully it's for at least the same they sold Bamford to Leeds, anything else would be an insult.

So who are we going to sign to replace him??!!! Same old Ipswich. Selling our best players and not replacing them. We've got 3 strikers after he's gone and one of them is more of a winger. We basically have 2 strikers. Give Aaron Drinan a game for crying out loud!!!!!!!!

A shame but makes business sense. I don't think you can use the words ‘loyal servant' after leaving after just 1 year

Good luck Martyn and thanks for last season. No one will know if this is a good deal or not till the end of the season. If he goes on to score 16plus for Middlesborough then it's very good business for them, if he returns to the averages of his prior to ITFC performances then we've done the deal of the century! .

Sorry to see him go, but a good deal for everyone, he had a good season for us, and a real character. Looks like we are getting the 2 guys from Shrewsbury and with Tilt left out yesterday hopefully a good sign. Having watched yesterday's game we need a solid centre back and another goal scorer, hopefully the funds will be reinvested. Good business so far by PH and ME in my opinion.

Quite frankly a terrible deal. We needed to keep him. Once Rangers have had their %, all fees taken out, taxes paid we'll be lucky to have 3 million left. Should have offered him a better contract that he deserves and turn his head back towards Ipswich.

Mark me down and ready and eat a massive portion of humble pie if I'm wrong, but this young and and hungry league 1 player recruitment is a massive gamble, and one that I worry will end in relegation. Nothing to to with the merits of PH, MM, this is purely to do with an owner who has no interest in financing a championship team to promotion. In today's football world there is no other way- Sadly.

if you gave $20m tomorrow i wouldn't move up there, lifes too short to live in mediocrity...norwich is 600 times better....

I don't get this ME's “tax haven” or “no interest in funding club” talk!!!!!
Yes loses go against tax bill but still loses. No matter if lost on assets or tax payments it's still a lose from his wealth.
Funding the club isn't as straight forward as writing a chq!
You now have to live within your capabilities, what other clubs do is down to them but it can bite them hard.

Good players going out. Average players coming in. A relegation battle this year. If you don't agree with that then your in denial

So we're going to swap Waghorn for Nsiala, Nolan, Jackson and Tilt?

Fine by me!?

backwiththeboysagain added 13:26 - Aug 5
Agree with tomitfc, one season doesn't amount to loyalty. First interest shown and he's off, hopefully he doesn't have a season like his one with us. The most important thing now is for PH to be given all the funds to reinvest in new players, not just a small percentage of it.

So this will add up to 11 mil in sales , and we lost around 14 / 15 players of the wage bill..so ltes just see what PH gets off ME , and i,m willing to bet it,s nowehre near 11 Mil ..we are going nowhere under ME , (years of underinvestment since he got burnt by RK & PJ) one pre-scripted "interiew" in 10 years..and despite assertiones to the contrary..the 6-7 mil a year he"puts" in is added to the debt , other posters have come back and said " but he has said he wont get the money back" so write it off then..!!! still be well within FFP , but no he adds it to the debt , nothing will change with ME as a owner.

MoscowBlueMule added 13:32 - Aug 5
Bedsit, it is just as simple as writing a cheque. ME could if he wanted Invest 25 million and still be within FFP. 10 million covering costs 15 million on two major signings while keeping our key players. I'm delighted and much as surprised that we kept Bart. . Running a football club is a big boys game. ME needs to either? *?* or get off the pot.
