Derby New Favourites to Land Waghorn in Dramatic Late Twist
Sunday, 5th Aug 2018 20:59

Derby County have emerged as the new favourites to sign Blues striker Martyn Waghorn having matched Boro’s offer for the 28-year-old in a dramatic late twist to the long-running transfer saga.

Earlier this morning the Teessiders, long-time admirers of Waghorn, had an offer accepted by the Blues, which TWTD can confirm is an initial £5 million. Speaking last night, manager Paul Hurst admitted Town would have to accept a fee below their valuation.

Now, the Daily Telegraph is reporting that Derby, who have been Boro’s main rivals for Waghorn for the last few weeks, have matched that bid and last season’s 16-goal top scorer is set to undergo a medical at Pride Park tomorrow.

As with the Boro offer, the deal is likely to include top-up clauses which would eventually boost that figure, probably up towards the £8 million overall total previously reported.

Meanwhile, Sheffield United reportedly still haven’t given up hope of landing Waghorn themselves.

According to the Sheffield Star, the Blades are looking into “restructuring” their bid, which was believed to have been a little below £5 million.

However, the Blades, who made that offer more than a month ago, appear to have missed the boat.

TWTD was first to reveal Derby's interest in Waghorn early last month with their first bid coming almost a fortnight ago.

The Rams had looked the favourites to land the former Leicester, Sunderland and Wigan man until the middle of last week but their plans were believed to have suffered a blow when Matej Vydra's sale to Leeds fell through.

That was understood to be a deal they needed to complete if they were to sign Waghorn in order to stay within Financial Fair Play limits. However, it was subsequently reported that that was a red herring, something which now appears to have been confirmed by the Rams' new offer.

Waghorn cost the Blues only £250,000 when he joined from Rangers last August. The Ibrox club will receive 10 per cent of the profit Town make on that deal.

The Blues will use the cash from Waghorn's sale to make additions to their squad before Thursday's deadline with Shrewsbury pair Toto Nsiala and Jon Nolan expected to confirm their moves on Monday.

The Blues are also chasing Blackpool centre-half Curtis Tilt, who was left out of the Seasiders' team yesterday, and Accrington striker Kayden Jackson, while Cardiff's Omar Bogle, another frontman, is a loan target.

Meanwhile, former Blues winger Mustapha Carayol joined Kevin Bru at Apollon Limassol on Friday. Like Bru, Carayol, 29, was released by Town at the end of last season.

I hope we told Derby the Boro bid was higher than reality...!!

Very disappointing that it's £5 million, but can still get a few reinforcements with that which is important.

Getting dull this whole saga. The only club he won't be playing for is us, it would seem..

Overall happy, 5 mill( if invested in players) plus. No one can predict Wagy will repeat 16 plus goals. Feeling positive.

Didn't we reject bids of £5m a week or so ago? Christ we fold quickly. Just get it done and over with and bring in as many quality players before the deadline.

I don't really care who it is at this point in time, just want the whole thing over with. £5m is a bit of a joke though, I mean as much as it's a good return on what we originally paid for Waggy I'd have liked us to have stuck to our original valuation. Seems crazy that we've rejected higher offers before (e.g. McGoldrick) but haven't done the same here with last year's standout player.

You'd think if Derby knew Boro had had an offer accepted then we'd tell Derby to bid more than Boro, not the same amount...

With 3 relatively rich clubs vying for him, it's a little disappointing that we've agreed to 'only' £5m up front. Surely there was some extra capacity there.
My only assumption would be that Hurst said it has to be settled now so that his reinforcements can be brought in while we still have time. Perhaps some of the clubs would have paid more on deadline day, but brinksmanship is a dangerous game & could have left us in a situation like me hard with Murphy. Ultimately this decision could save us money, if it is settled tomorrow & allows Hurst to get in who he wants before Thursday.

* "we had" that should be, very much that & not what has appeared. Fat fingers, small phones & alcohol are not a good combination.

Why are Derby favourites if their offer is only the same as Middlesbrough's . Going back to the North East is surely a plus for Waghorn ……….or is there something more in Derby's offer , maybe a player or more wages ? how can Derby do this deal without selling Vydra

Those saying £5 mill isn't enough need to remember he only cost £250k 12 months ago!! The £5 mill will rise if he does well which there's no guarantee he could be a 1 season wonder for us. That money can be spent improving the whole team & I think we'll all agree it needs it. We have to trust in Hurst he knows what he wants and it looks like Evans is going to let him have it!! That's something else that so many wanted!!

How sad that we can't even compete at this level now and it seems we are moving closer to league 1 rather than any chance of the top flight again. We have an owner who is happy to invest money into the youth set up, the same one that has witnessed our best two promising youngsters being sold to Chelsea and Man City in the last year without even kicking a ball in a first team Ipswich shirt. Is it just me or does it feel like our club is going backwards again?

Well said Sitters. I just read the story to Mrs HfromB now and she also said "I thought they were Frank Lampard's Derby".

Joking aside, I can see why Derby want him. Without him, they risk becoming a third version of Steve McClaren's 4-3-3, lacking a front-man to make their dynamic play work. Playing him as a set-piece specialist or in a wide role at Boro would have been criminal and a waste of his talent.

I think we will all wish him well. He was a brilliant club ambassador in his time here, and both parties have benefited from his season at Portman Road.

This doesn't make sense to me. Surely Derby must improve the bid made by Middlesboro or it's first come first served?

Hopefully this will be settled tomorrow so we can have the Garner 'will he or won't he' saga on Monday and Tuesday, followed by the Knudsen 'will he or won't he' saga on Wednesday and Thursday.

Always the same aren't we when it comes to selling our best players..just take whatever's offered and say thankyou.

We need to toughen up on this side of things or we'll forever be walked over.

Norwich get £25m for Maddison & we're getting £5m+ ......#pathetic
