Derby New Favourites to Land Waghorn in Dramatic Late Twist
Sunday, 5th Aug 2018 20:59

Derby County have emerged as the new favourites to sign Blues striker Martyn Waghorn having matched Boro’s offer for the 28-year-old in a dramatic late twist to the long-running transfer saga.

Earlier this morning the Teessiders, long-time admirers of Waghorn, had an offer accepted by the Blues, which TWTD can confirm is an initial £5 million. Speaking last night, manager Paul Hurst admitted Town would have to accept a fee below their valuation.

Now, the Daily Telegraph is reporting that Derby, who have been Boro’s main rivals for Waghorn for the last few weeks, have matched that bid and last season’s 16-goal top scorer is set to undergo a medical at Pride Park tomorrow.

As with the Boro offer, the deal is likely to include top-up clauses which would eventually boost that figure, probably up towards the £8 million overall total previously reported.

Meanwhile, Sheffield United reportedly still haven’t given up hope of landing Waghorn themselves.

According to the Sheffield Star, the Blades are looking into “restructuring” their bid, which was believed to have been a little below £5 million.

However, the Blades, who made that offer more than a month ago, appear to have missed the boat.

TWTD was first to reveal Derby's interest in Waghorn early last month with their first bid coming almost a fortnight ago.

The Rams had looked the favourites to land the former Leicester, Sunderland and Wigan man until the middle of last week but their plans were believed to have suffered a blow when Matej Vydra's sale to Leeds fell through.

That was understood to be a deal they needed to complete if they were to sign Waghorn in order to stay within Financial Fair Play limits. However, it was subsequently reported that that was a red herring, something which now appears to have been confirmed by the Rams' new offer.

Waghorn cost the Blues only £250,000 when he joined from Rangers last August. The Ibrox club will receive 10 per cent of the profit Town make on that deal.

The Blues will use the cash from Waghorn's sale to make additions to their squad before Thursday's deadline with Shrewsbury pair Toto Nsiala and Jon Nolan expected to confirm their moves on Monday.

The Blues are also chasing Blackpool centre-half Curtis Tilt, who was left out of the Seasiders' team yesterday, and Accrington striker Kayden Jackson, while Cardiff's Omar Bogle, another frontman, is a loan target.

Meanwhile, former Blues winger Mustapha Carayol joined Kevin Bru at Apollon Limassol on Friday. Like Bru, Carayol, 29, was released by Town at the end of last season.

waghorn was brilliant for us last season, but its the only good season he has had in his career, ask the wider football world and they cant believe were getting this much for him, speak to any rangers fan and there in shock at this deal. i thick mick tactics just played to waggys strengths and i don't think were looking to play that way any more. my opinion but i think this is a great deal for the club and player, invest the money and move on. i would take any bet from any fan that waggy doesn't get more than ten this season were ever he goes

Even with the shrews two we still need to get Tilt in and a decent striker for it to be a satisfactory transfer window

Poor deal in today's market, I'm sure the club know it too. I guess we're just that desperate for the money as the squad has more holes than a string vest at the moment.

The £200k figure came from McCarthy.

also remember the likes of ross mccormack one good season then getting sold for mad money look at how thats worked for him since, waggy is not the best srtiker in the by a mile, afobe went to wolves for 12 then strait to stoke on loan he is twice if not three times the player of wagorn wich tells us the market value for waggy is about 4-6 mill plus add ons, plus after rangers get there cut of the initail fee they wont get any from the add ons as they are bonuses so if derby got up we end with an extra few mill as a bonus, wich tells me marcus is a shrewd business man. the more we get upfront the more we pay rangers!

I don't get it and I don't like it- we don't have many strikers (Harrison and an injured Garner) He is a top player with goals in his locker and we only had him for a year and he did great. Now we will sell him to another club in our division and you know he will score against us. In about 2 weeks we will have a team that have mostly been brought in in the last month and will need a ton of time to gel.

Looks like we are the only ones that don't rate him highly. Good luck to MW whereever he ends up :-)

Yep sounds like we folded early again instead of holding out our nerve.. ME has supposedly made his fortune on wheeling and dealing?

Unbelievable. Yes we only paid £200k odd, but so what? I dont think that is relevant. Wings only cost £10k!

Other strikers go for a lot more. You dont get much for £5M these days and we will be giving rangers nearly 0.5M!

Forest sold their striker for £15M last season!! We need to drive a harder bargain.. Is Clegg back??

Really cant believe some people on here. Its wuite obvious that the reason we have accepted a lower original amount is because waghorn has asked to go and hurst doesnt want to end up with an unhappy player at the club which could affect the team spirit within the camp. Plus he needs the money to strengthen the squad. If we had hung out for more we may or may not have got it or could have come too late to sign anyone we after. And personally dont see why people think hes worth more anyway. Is exactly the type of player many have calked a journeyman in the past, having not stayed anywhere more than a couple of years. Yes he did well last season but if the friendlies he played in this year are any guide, he wasn't interested in being here. So best for all sides to sell

I'm not looking forward to this season anymore.

If Waghorn had come out once and said he was happy to stay, i would give a toss. But he hasnt, at all, so trading him for 3-4 new players that want to come is a fair swap no matter what the valuations are.

He help us last season, and for that we can be grateful, but we move on.

Our negotiating team must be utterly useless. How is it we manage to far less for our players than anybody else does?

5m is a joke, an insult. Pathetic.

Timmy, I think £900k was for both Garner and Waghorn from Rangers. Garner was around £700k and Waghorn £200k.

If both bids are equal then it's down to the contract offered that will sway his(agents) choice I will be glad when it's all over he has clearly wanted out(without making it official) but the price has come down as Marcus fears they would both walk away.

Firstly we do not know the exact amount secondly if you look at his career except for last season he hasnt set the world alight . I loved him last year but as I have said Bart was our must keep and like it or not we are a club that has to sell .if you look over the years Mings , Wickham etc we maxed out at right time . Who knows what Waghorn will do at Derby . Good luck to him but not like he is a long servant . Use the money for 4 new signings and I will be very happy . Let the rebuild commence . It is a 2 to 3 season project whereas Mick was a band aid that began to fall off . Exciting times ahead . We all ( mostly) wanted a change and Bart was key for us . He stays .I can see him being skipper soon as well .

Sounds like to me nobody wants to pay more than 5 mill for him. Paul Hurst reminds me of the business Sir Bobby did Paul Mariner comes to mind brought from Plymouth Paul played several times for England. Im not saying PH lower league signings will play for their country but you get my drift. Onward and upwards

Runningout. Think youve missed something there. It actually seems that others rate him less than we do or theyd have offered the £8-10m straight away, rather than just £5m now with add ons taking it up to the £8m we wanted. So, for 1 we could end up with the amount we want anyway. 2. If we dont it means he wont have done enough

And thus shown last year a one off season for him

I really want this saga to end.
It's becoming exceptionally boring.
For whatever reason, Waghorn is off.
Get over it.
New manager, New players, new ideas.
Just what the majority on here called for last season.
The money is being reinvested in the team.
Some of you are like kids in a sweet shop.
Hurst doesn't have to spend every penny he has right now!
He will be here for the long term and come the next window may have a better idea of what players he requires rather than rushing in and signing expensive mistakes.
Two goals Saturday by two debutants. The man knows what he's doing.
£5 million for a player who has had one good season is a touch.
Should five players from lower leagues be bought on that money and two turn out to be regular first team players we've had a result.
Paul Hurst is building HIS team now and I for one am looking forward to him giving this club the massive kick up the backside it is so desperately in need of!
A good day out Saturday with signs of a positive team for the future.
To watch a 'cast off' such as Edwards take on defenders and beating them with pace was a joy to watch.
The Hurst revolution has just begun!

Don't see the problem really....... Big Picture

Webber and Waghorn are not the greatest players........true better than some....yet Town still a mid table side.

For me Webber in and out of the side with injuries never set the world alight....Waghorn had an excellent season last year......but in his career that's the only season....why did Rangers let him go so cheap if he is this £10million pound player.

Waghorn has a chance of doubling his wage so he not going to say ‘i'll Stay' just cause it Ipswich Town.
Waghorn might not fit in to Hurst new plan.

So far Hurst has brought in 5 players and 2 more on the way today plus 2 more that are targets who may still get......so no one can say ME is not backing him.......the cost of Tilt and Jackson could be £3.5 million plus the £1.5 for the Shews lads that's £5 ... the price of Waghorn.

One out four in

Do the club stand still or move forward........Waghorn or 4 new players look what happened when we sold Dyer.

I would think the offer is neare 6million plus add on's as there is more than one club chasing him now.( just my thoughts).
If we were to hang the deal out for longer it's possible we would not have time to strengthen our squad so an early deal is best for all I feel.
Let's just get the new recruits in early and get them used to the team before next Saturday.

I really don't believe it's 5m after all Derby paid a reported 5m for Marriott from posh a leauge 1 goal scorer. Waghorn is proven championship scorer so must be worth more and I'd think it will be a massive promotion add on.

Why all the whinging about only getting £5m for Waggy. Its a good profit on a player we paid £250,000 a year ago. At the end of the day we tried to get £8m none was prepared to pay that much, a bit like selling a house its worth what someone is prepared to pay for it. If a prem team had come in for him like they did for Maddison then that would have pushed the price up.

Why do we have to accept a bid below our valuation yet others stick to their valuations or no deal?
