Shrews Pair at Town to Complete Move
Monday, 6th Aug 2018 10:48

Shrews pair Toto Nsiala and Jon Nolan have arrived at Town to undergo their medicals and complete the formalities relating to their moves to the Blues, TWTD understands.

The clubs agreed a fee over the weekend - which we understand to be nearer £2 million than the £1.5 million reported yesterday - with the duo’s move to Portman Road expected to be completed later today or tomorrow morning.

A Blues move for Nsiala and Nolan had been widely anticipated since Hurst took over at Portman Road with both key players in his Shrewsbury team which reached the League One play-offs last season.

The pair, who are both 26, were initially recruited by Hurst during his time as Grimsby manager from elsewhere in non-league, having previously been with the Everton academy.

Following his spell at Everton, Huyton-born Nolan spent time with Stockport County, Lincoln City and Wrexham (loan) before joining Hurst's Grimsby in January 2016 prior to moving on to Chesterfield that summer. A year later Hurst took him to Shrewsbury.

Nsiala, a DR Congo international born in Kinshasa, spent time on loan at Macclesfield and Accrington while with Everton before a spell with TDCS Dong Thap in Vietnam.

After returning to the UK, Nsiala, who was brought up in Liverpool from the age of 10 after a period living in Paris, joined Southport before playing for Hurst at Grimsby between 2014 and 2016. After half a season at Hartlepool he was reunited with his old boss at Shrewsbury last summer.

Elsewhere, Martyn Waghorn is expected at Derby to undergo his medical this morning ahead of his £5 million plus add-ons, which we understand could eventually see the fee climb to £7.5 million, switch to the Rams.

A good thing about these signings is that they both already know how to play the Hurst way so hopefully they shouldn't take long to settle in.

Sheffield Utd came up from league one last year and were top in December until they lost a key player (Paul Coutts) to injury. There is more than enough talent in Leagues 1 and 2 to get promoted; the skill is identifying it and putting it together. I believe we have a man capable of doing that. We must also have a squad that does not rely on the form and fitness of any one player. Again, all the signs are that Hurst is addressing this.

@SheffieldTractor good point raised there. The only difference is that the Sheffield United squad had the experience of playing together in league one for a few seasons before and of course been a promoted team in a new league had the confidence at the start of the season. The youngsters (with a lot of potential) havent had the luxury of playing in the same team for a season or 2

If we get some of the long term injuries back on the field , we could end up with the perfect plead of youth , Potential and experience .
All this under a new manager who wants very much to succeed .
Might be an up and down year but it's going to be a very interesting ride for all of us watching .

Also hope are home grown young guns can have plenty of game time too

The only ways a club like our is to improve is to nurture our academy prospects and unearth some gems from the lower leagues. Premier league players cost premier league wages, and the best players in the championship should be playing in the premier league.
I believe Hurst is the man for the job, and I will support him in doing his job.
Even Mick was the right man for the job when he came in. Hurst has a stable foundation to build on. All he needs to do this season is stay up and make the football we play entertaining.

ajs83: you make a valid point but several of your examples aren't valid or correct.

Gary Roberts was never any good for us once he cam eoff his loan spell.
David Johnson was playing in the Championship when we signed him
Mings played was at the club for some time before he became a first team player, so it gave us a chance to assess him
Crewe were in the championship when we signed Jermaine Wright
Jordan Spence had been at Crystal Palace for a while before he ended up at MK Dons

Anyway, I get your point and don't really diagree but I do think that flooding the team with recruits from lower leagues is risky. As you have shown, players can step up but expecting 8 or so to do so in the same team, without a stable core of experienced players (Sears and Skuse could possibly be dropped leaving us with just Chambers) is expecting a lot.

I'm hopeful but there's no denying there's a big risk.

Let's give them all a chance. Football is risky. There's no guarantee any player will have a good season. majority of football teams buy from lower leagues and do well.

The debate on the League 1 players is interesting and will continue until we know what they are capable of. I think the point is that we are trying to pick up the cream of the League 1 players who should be able to step up

On another topic, the Gwion Edwards song is great but get the words right guys. It's "wearing Blue and White". That's what Posh fans used to sing (not "running down the wing" - which doesn't rhyme)

Get them signed up in time, so that they can be on the road to EXETER with the squad

There ain't arf some old nonsense here about 'League One players'. Maybe you should hang by Sean Dyche's Wiki page? Watford Under 18 coach to Premiership manager. If you're good enough etc. etc..

I have no issue with lower league signings if PH thinks they are good enough. Some may remember when Liverpool bought a player from Scunthorpe called Kevin Keegan. Need I say more?

TractorBoyTommy added 12:13 - Aug 6
@BobbyBell are you suggesting that all the players we have signed are of the quality of kevin Keegan?? Ill have to put a bet on us to win the league by 20 points then.

It will take time to bed in the players. and hopefully get our young guns to acclimatise to the pace of Championship football. We might wait all season for some consistency, but let's give PH time, eh? I for one will be happy so long as we are competing, playing good football and hopefully have a brief run after Christmas in the Cup.

Nolan will be a great addition to the team but I am certain Nsiala will be filth

Bring in one or two div 1 players to complement what you have, To open the flood gates and we could be washed away,

Some really good business going on here. Exciting times. Now get Tilt and a striker (x2). The injured will have to prove themselves with the new competition. No more picking names - you have got to earn it to be in the team. Up ITFC

Isnt it weird that Evans told us all the financial model wouldnt change and yet here we are spending more money in 1 summer than Mick spent in his entire tenure despite raising something like 12m in fees? I wonder why he lied about that. Or maybe Hurst explained to him that he would need to spend money to stand still this season unlike the last couple.
Still, I welcome this volte-face and look forward to seeing Nolan in particular as everyone is saying how good he is. Be interesting to see if all of a sudden Huws and Adeyemi get fit after his arrival.

Honestly i do not like all this talk of lower league players not being good enough, its as if we all have brains like a goldfish and have forgotten that a lot of players that have gone for big fees in recent times have come from a lower league, Mings springs to mind straight away as does aaron Cresswell.

We have to trust Paul hurst, after all he has been managing in these leagues past few years so i trust he knows whats about and who is good enough. Some one made the point that Gwion was the best player on the park on Saturday, i could not agree more, Harrison also looks a handful and will always chase a ball down, all these signs look so positive for the future.

If we had of lost yesterday i woulds still have felt positive about the future based on what i had seen, still a work in progress and there is much to do but the signs are definitely there.

On the point of Waghorn also, lots of people are moaning about the fact it seems we have to sell him in order to make these transfers. Whilst part of that statement is true, no one has really made reference (At least not that i have seen) to the fact all signs point to Waghorn wanting to go to be closer to home.

Paul Hurst would not say what their private chat was in reference to, but reading between the lines and some other hints that have been dropped in interviews, i suspect that Waghorn asked to leave, but is too respectful to hand in an official transfer. Paul Hurst seems like the type to say "Ok no point in keeping a player, no matter how good if he wants to leave because it will effect the player and the club"

No player is bigger than the club, also there is nothing to suggest that he will emulate the same form elsewhere, could be a one hit wonder.

I get annoyed as people are quick to make the assumption that fits with the way they feel about the situation rather than considering that actually this may well be out of the managers and clubs hands in regards to the players own personal feelings and wants.

I feell so positive about us right now, manager saying the right things, already got in some decent players, all be it i have seen them in one competitive game, and the manager is being backed finacially it would seem.

TractoBoyTommy -

Of course there is a risk in taking these League 1 and 2 players. But isnt that what football is about? We could have signed 4 or 5 mediocre Championship players and had another spectacular season finishing 14th. The reason Hurst was appointed was because he knows those leagues inside out. He knows who is capable of stepping up. So that risk is limited to a degree, he isn't taking pot shots and hoping to get lucky. He has studied these players for last few years, and who knows where that will take us. If those players gel and get the backing we could have a great season, if they falter to begin with then we might be in for struggle. Either way it is going to be a hell of lot more exciting than the turgid football on offer for the last few seasons and surely that is something to be positive about.

Waghorn going and garner likely to go need to splash the cash and get in Jackson and tilt and review further striker options in January window ,Morris could be surprise package and will probably out perform sears this season !!.

Why is Waghorn only worth £5m (£7.5 with so called add ons) when Bamford goes for £10m. Seems to me that this is another player going on the cheap!

Ajs83 can I throw Simon Milton in there it was either Thetford or Bury Town, before he made his way here,as somebody said before Paul Mariner Plymouth I suppose we could go on and on,these boys seem hungry and not short of talent, only hope Tilt arrives as well

Where did Sheffield Utd finish last season? their players were div 1 the year before, did Blackburn look out of their depth on Saturday? their players were div 1 last year. It's not where you come from, it's were you are going that matters.

rubbleblue added 14:12 - Aug 6
Buying these players is very good. They are all players considered good enough for higher league teams. It's not like taking an entire team where quality overall will differ.
These players are imo better than we currently have, our youngsters will be very good but let's not burn them out by throwing them in head first.
These bookies have it all wrong for our club, we will be at worst mid table, the new players will gel and excite us fans. Not felt like this since sir Bobby was here. Hurst lead us to the promised land!!
