Town Linked With Rangers Forward as Accrington Chairman Dismisses Jackson Claims
Tuesday, 7th Aug 2018 08:50

Town are being linked with a £2 million move for Rangers forward Josh Windass, while Accrington Stanley chairman Andy Holt has dismissed reports that a fee for striker Kayden Jackson has been agreed with a number of clubs and that he is set to join the Blues.

According to Football Insider, Town have made a bid for 24-year-old Windass, the son of former Hull City star Dean, as they look to replace Martyn Waghorn, whose move to Derby is set to be confirmed today.

Hull-born Windass started his career in Huddersfield’s youth set-up before dropping into non-league with Harrogate Railway Athletic.

The 5ft 9in tall forward, primarily more an attacking midfielder than an out and out striker, moved on to Accrington Stanley before joining Rangers in the summer of 2016.

Windass has scored 19 goals in 57 starts and 14 sub appearances in his two seasons at Ibrox and signed a new contract which runs to 2021 in February. All bar one of his Rangers goals came last season.

Town are very much in the market for another attacker with Waghorn’s move to the Rams imminent and last night were reported to have agreed a fee with Accrington for Jackson along with QPR and Peterborough.

According to further reports overnight, Jackson has opted to join Town ahead of the other two contenders and is due to travel to Portman Road today to complete the formalities relating to his switch.

However, Stanley chairman Andy Holt poured cold water on both claims when responding to fans on Twitter with the situation appearing not to have progressed.

Accrington had put a £2.5 million price tag on Jackson’s head but will almost certainly have to accept a lower figure than that if and when their prized asset moves on. Town are previously understood to have had bids of up to £1.75 million bid turned down.

Holt added that he would like Jackson, who is effectively contracted to his club until the summer of 2020, to stay for the duration of this campaign, their first in League One following last season's League Two title win, but ultimately wouldn’t “stand in his way” and says he can move on if a fee is agreed with a club he wants to join.

Despite the boost of the Waghorn cash, it would be a surprise if the Blues were to spend two fees at or around £2 million before Thursday, although a second attacker may well be on Paul Hurst’s radar, particularly if Bolton are successful in their attempt to sign Joe Garner.

The Blues are set to complete the additions of Toto Nsiala and Jon Nolan from Shrewsbury for a combined fee of approaching £2 million today, while Blackpool centre-half Curtis Tilt remains on their radar and if the deal eventually goes through is likely to cost somewhere between the £700,000 previously offered by the Blues and the £1 million targeted by the Tangerines.

I can't see this happening, but from what I've seen of him he's a really exciting player. Buzzing if we can pull this off

Windass would be a terrific signing. I'd be very shocked if we were the only ones who'd try and sign him for £2m. I'd be happy with Kayden Jackson as well though. It'd be great to see some lightning pace in the team with Edwards and Jackson.

Oh my, yes please!! What a window this has already been and could turn out to be even better! Nsiala and Nolan today, hopefully Tilt to follow and Jackson most likely on his way (hopefully not for £2.5M though) and if this Windass rumour is true.. Most exited I have been for quite a while!

Still, I'd love to see Bradshaw come in if any others fail!

Dont really see the point of looking at youtube videos of him and any other players we are linked for as it only shows the players best bits, heck if I had a youtube montage of my footballing highlights I would be up there with Ronaldo and Messi and I have 2 left feet and couldnt trap a bag of cement! Also have to take his goals/assits in the scottish league with a pinch of salt as the standard is the same as league 2 football, which was where he was at with accrington stanley, so in my opinion would be a risk as he has not played in a competitive and better standard league like the championship.

I'd be amazed if we got all of Tilt, Jackson and Windass along with the Shrews 2. Love to see it happen and what a team we'll have. Certainly a huge difference to the dross from the last two seasons

@TractorBoyTommy

We signed Waghorn and Garner from Scottish football.

As the report hints, Windass would be very much a direct replacement for Waghorn, fitting in just behind the striker in Hurst's 4-2-3-1. However Nolan will surely be taking this role (with a fit again Bishop becoming a differnt type of alternative later). Therefore I am more concerned about getting a second front man; namely Jackson. Apart from the injured Garner we have no other senior player to lead the attack and cant rely or expect Harrison to do so for 90 minutes in every game. Yes please to Windass for £2m but Jackson and Tilt are needed more urgently.

Janeb, I could be wrong but I believe he resigned over the situation with tilt and that Oyston is standing in the way of his career progression. Bit of a Barney with Oyston being inflexible.

@Taricco_Fan both waghorn and Garner played in the championship before moving to Rangers, windass joined from league 2

Would definitely prefer Windass to Jackson, he's more proven and having watched him play a few times I think he'd do well for us.

I'm much more excited by this prospect than Jackson (if we have to choose between the two). We're in need of a number 10 more than another number 9 if we play 4-2-3-1 this season. Harrison can rotate with Garner when he is fit, but we're lacking any quality in the 10 position.

Possibly waghorn has made the suggestion of Windass as his replacement, I'm sure PH would have been aware of him - would go windass over Jackson and would be happier if that meant spending the 2.5M being talked about

Is it just me, or does ' The Shrewsbury Pair ', sound more like a couple of bank robbers ?

If we were to get Josh Windass, I'd be a very, very happy man! Quality player with bags of potential still!

No brained for me... Get windlass tilt and Jackson for around 5mil + sell on for Jackson. Then Nolan and toto, then would like to see a GK Frodingham or Amos as competition for Bart with gerks and sears going out on loan to get some playing time. Would be very happy with this deal 🤝
