Town Linked With Rangers Forward as Accrington Chairman Dismisses Jackson Claims
Tuesday, 7th Aug 2018 08:50

Town are being linked with a £2 million move for Rangers forward Josh Windass, while Accrington Stanley chairman Andy Holt has dismissed reports that a fee for striker Kayden Jackson has been agreed with a number of clubs and that he is set to join the Blues.

According to Football Insider, Town have made a bid for 24-year-old Windass, the son of former Hull City star Dean, as they look to replace Martyn Waghorn, whose move to Derby is set to be confirmed today.

Hull-born Windass started his career in Huddersfield’s youth set-up before dropping into non-league with Harrogate Railway Athletic.

The 5ft 9in tall forward, primarily more an attacking midfielder than an out and out striker, moved on to Accrington Stanley before joining Rangers in the summer of 2016.

Windass has scored 19 goals in 57 starts and 14 sub appearances in his two seasons at Ibrox and signed a new contract which runs to 2021 in February. All bar one of his Rangers goals came last season.

Town are very much in the market for another attacker with Waghorn’s move to the Rams imminent and last night were reported to have agreed a fee with Accrington for Jackson along with QPR and Peterborough.

According to further reports overnight, Jackson has opted to join Town ahead of the other two contenders and is due to travel to Portman Road today to complete the formalities relating to his switch.

However, Stanley chairman Andy Holt poured cold water on both claims when responding to fans on Twitter with the situation appearing not to have progressed.

Accrington had put a £2.5 million price tag on Jackson’s head but will almost certainly have to accept a lower figure than that if and when their prized asset moves on. Town are previously understood to have had bids of up to £1.75 million bid turned down.

Holt added that he would like Jackson, who is effectively contracted to his club until the summer of 2020, to stay for the duration of this campaign, their first in League One following last season's League Two title win, but ultimately wouldn’t “stand in his way” and says he can move on if a fee is agreed with a club he wants to join.

Despite the boost of the Waghorn cash, it would be a surprise if the Blues were to spend two fees at or around £2 million before Thursday, although a second attacker may well be on Paul Hurst’s radar, particularly if Bolton are successful in their attempt to sign Joe Garner.

The Blues are set to complete the additions of Toto Nsiala and Jon Nolan from Shrewsbury for a combined fee of approaching £2 million today, while Blackpool centre-half Curtis Tilt remains on their radar and if the deal eventually goes through is likely to cost somewhere between the £700,000 previously offered by the Blues and the £1 million targeted by the Tangerines.

Personally I hope we're not paying £2m for a league 2 striker - far too much of a gamble if it backfires - we need to be looking for bargains like last summer with Waghorn & Garner.

This is all good news, the only concern I'd have is the progression of Dozzell, Downes , Nydam and Wolfenden.

Never mind him, get Jordan Jones in from Kilmarnock. Left winger to balance our Edwards on the right and get Freddie away from that touch line.

@braveblue I have family up Kilmarnock way, will go to a couple of games a year. Not sure why you are asking that question? If you look at the players each team signs I am sure you will understand my point more. Celtic buy aveage championship players/ premier league flops at best (Sinclair, dembele, gordon, spring to mind in the current crop) and run away with the league at a canter, Rangers are now signing the same sort of player now they are establishing themselves in the top division again. Below that all other teams when buying players from England will get players from League 1, 2 and the Conference. Hence why the standard of league is league 2 at best with the exception of celtic and rangers.

Whether you support or oppose the club's plan, picking up players from division 1 and 2 and having a peek in Scotland,
There can be no denying,
These are exciting times!

Rangers fans can't stand the fella according to their forums, don't know what he's done to upset them.

@dusth

The article you link says his release clause was NOT raised to 3m when he signed his new contract and Cardiff did NOT approach his son... not sure how this conflicts bar the last two lines, which there is zero evidence for.

We need someone like this. I'm concerned about our current frontline being enough for a promotion push. My mate is a rangers fan and thinks its unlikely they'll sell at this stage with no replacement lined up. But we need someone... with the wing play we look to have we are crying out for a decent target man to feed to the supply.

Right what's the news?

1. Assume we are waiting on Derby to get their arses in gear and when they do we will confirm our 2 new lads?

2. What the he'll is taking Derby so long, I thought they wanted Waghorn.

3. What a Happening with Jackson. EDP still claims he is on his way down today. Accrington chairman (And prize plum, not often one agrees with Gary Neville) says its BS and no bids accepted. Anyone seen the lad round FPR?

Lots of conjecture and conflicting info......!

Derby getting Nahki Wells on loan as part of a deal for Vydra to go to Burnley apparently. Do Derby want to sign Waghorn on top of Marriott & Wells in this window?

So if we buy this Rangers forward for £2m that means we'll sell him for £80m next year, right? That's how it works?
