Waghorn's Derby Move Confirmed
Wednesday, 8th Aug 2018 10:38

Derby County have confirmed the signing of Martyn Waghorn on a three-year deal for a fee of £5 million rising to £7.5 million. TWTD was first to reveal Derby's interest in Waghorn early last month.

Waghorn, who has been handed the number nine shirt at Pride Park, admits the uncertainty regarding his future had been praying on his mind in recent weeks.

“I was getting different calls, being fed different bits of information on a daily basis to be honest,” Waghorn told RamsTV.

“It’s quite difficult [to concentrate] when all that is happening. I still had training and games to distract myself from that and at that point, your family also help.

“I have got a really good family network around me and they help me a lot. As soon as I knew that this call was in, though, I was desperate to get up here.”

He added: “When I spoke to the manager he told me about the plans, the way he sees the club going and how I fitted into the system and team, I thought it was a very attractive proposition.

“I was excited about the project and the direction the club is going in and I just wanted to be part of it.

“I know that Derby have been up and around it over the last few seasons and I’m hoping I can come in and try and help push this club forward and get back to where it wants to be, which is the Premier League. I can’t wait to get started.

“When you see the training facilities and stadium, it’s clear from the off that it is a big club.

“Over the past few years, Derby has been up and around the promotion positions and as an opposition, you know you’re going to have a difficult game.

“It’s always been the case that I have rarely picked up three points here. The club has always played attractive football too, they’re always on the front foot and that’s something I’m glad to be part of.”

Rams manager Frank Lampard fought off competition from Middlesbrough and Sheffield United among others to land Waghorn.

“I’m delighted to see Martyn Waghorn become a Derby County player - I think this is a big signing for us,” he told the Derby official website.

“He has been sought-after all summer and we’ve managed to bring him here, which is fantastic. We sold the club to him and, importantly, he wanted to come here and that’s the sort of player that I want in the squad.

“Martyn has many great qualities and he has been pretty prolific over the last few years in front of goal. He is a real all-round striker and last year we saw not only could he score goals in the Championship but create them as well.”

Waghorn made 39 starts and two sub appearances for the Blues during his single season at Portman Road having signed from Rangers for £250,000 in August last year.

The Ibrox club will receive an initial £475,000 from the South Shields-born frontman's move to Derby via a 10 per cent of profit sell-on clause.

He was directly involved in more Championship goals than anyone else during 2017/18, netting 16 times and recording 11 assists.

Confirmation of Waghorn’s exit will see the Blues formally announce the signings of Jon Nolan and Toto Nsiala from Shrewsbury.

Thanks for the season Martyn. It's sad to see you go but the money your transfer provided is opening lots of new options for us. Good luck at the Rams (except against us!)

Will be interesting to see how Lampard in the early days of his managerial career is going to handle some very very unhappy players.

Could make or break him!!

Don't think this was a case of Hurst cashing in on Waghorn, but more that there was nothing he could do to stop it. Big fee received, Waghorn obviously wanted the deal. Well done all, 3, maybe 4, maybe even 5 new signings with the proceeds. Good business! P.S. Waghorn could have had an average season this year in a new team shape and been worth half of what we sold him for!

All the clubs that wanted him will be automatic promotion or playoff contenders...we sell him. Sums the club up really.

Agree about Waghorn being a good footballer but Webster was injured prone so really did not see him at his best. He wanted a move and Waghorn if honest he probably did as well.

Something to do with wages!!

Not sure where Waghorn fits into the Derby team especially with 8 or 9 fighting for a couple of starting places. Why buy Marriott, couldn't even get into the 18 the other night!

You can't force someone to stay once they want to leave. It was pretty much out of our hands once the agents get involved.

Great player, shame he wasn´t with us for long. However, we will survive and who knows, maybe even progress. Let´s get some quality players in.

Wonder what the 'rising to 7.5m' conditions will be? Hopefully appearances and not Derby going up which will be a big if...

A year to the day since his ITFC debut v Luton I believe.
Really rather disappointed he's gone. Still, the money is allowing us to strengthen the team, so not all bad.
Wish you all the best Martyn. Hope you continue where you left off last season.

IF Derby get promoted will he be back next year on loan ? But then he hasn't actually played in anger for PH before so makes it unlikely !

Good luck to the bloke in his career but not quite keeping up with the "Waggy Love Train" i am afraid. Ranger got rid as they clearly did not rate the player, not as if MM paid stupid money to prize him away was it?. I am firmly in the "One wonderful season for us and a massive profit gained" camp. Money is obviously his motivator as he could not wait to exit PR for whoever paid him the most coin. On that basis i am glad he has gone and we now have money to invest in the PH revolution. (Now off to don my tin hat and await the incoming !! )

Great bit of business and wish him all the best. He done us proud last season and I think he's a great guy on and off the pitch. Just a bit disappointed he didn't mention us and the opportunity we gave him to showcase himself.

Disappointing to lose him but if he was that "desperate" to move then I'm glad he's gone. We want players here who want to be here and try hard to get us promoted without looking to do it elsewhere. Hopefully we will be a much better team with the money reinvested.

Don't get upset peteswindon.

I know you're hurting now but soon a new man will come into your life and Waghorn will just become a distant memory.......

Time is a great healer...

Best of luck Martyn and thanks for your great effort last season.

Between two minds on this, we all assume that the uncertainty was down to Wags and his agent looking for a move to a bigger club. I would be disappointed if however all this started with the club letting it be known that we were open to offers because PH needed the money to buy new players.

I am worried about our quality up front right now especially with Garner not yet match fit and somewhat injury prone.

Thank god the saga is over at long last, personally felt the attack should have been built around him but if Evans isn't willing to spend extra cash then that's up to him.

Bye Waggy! and the decent outfield football you produced last season.

Although disappointed to lose Waggy, we had a really good return on our investment and have to thank MM for spotting his potential. For me, he was decent but did go long goaless spells and only stood out in a team that had very limited goal scoring options.
Would much rather spread our creativity around the team and that already appears to be in place with the signings of all our new players.
Good luck but, Derby are just sooooo annoying!!

Good luck Waggy. Got the move you & Town wanted by sound of things.

Great business by Hurst so far, £5 Mill for a one season wonder & money reinvested in hungry young players. Club is rejuvenated already !!

Nolan is going to be one of our best ever signings... pure class.

BLUE ARMY !!

Good luck, Waggy. You were a decent player and a true professional; hopefully both you and ITFC will benefit from the move. Although it pains me a bit, I now have to hope Derby go up so that we can rake in a bit more cash.

Very sad to see you go Martyn, you had a great season here and was the brightest spark in our team of last season.
Hopefully with the money from Webster and Waghorn being invested in the correct players of which the like I have been wanting to happen for sometime will prove successful.
Paul Hurst was obviously clear in his head that he had to sell to advance the future of this club and his as soon as he applied for this managers position. He is bringing in players that he knows and who know how PH wants them to perform.
He has a clear vision and a plan and I'm going to be looking forward to see that vision and plan grow.
I'm not expecting instant success as players have to gel, but to get a win against them up the road is high on my wish list - long overdue.
