Town Confirm Jackson Signing
Thursday, 9th Aug 2018 11:08

Town have confirmed the signing of striker Kayden Jackson from Accrington Stanley for an initial fee of £1.6 million. The 24-year-old, who will wear the number nine shirt vacated by Martyn Waghorn, has signed a three-year deal with the club having an option for a further season.

In addition to the fee, a new record for Accrington and the most Town have paid for a single player since the £2.6 million spent on Grant Leadbitter in September 2009, top-ups could take the deal up to around £2 million, while the League One side will receive a percentage of any profit from a future sale. Barnsley, Jackson's previous club, will receive 30 per cent of the profit Stanley make on the player they signed for a nominal fee.

Blues boss Paul Hurst, who has made Jackson his ninth Town signing, has been tracking the striker, who previously played for him on loan at Grimsby, for a number of weeks.

Jackson says Portman Road was where he wanted to go as soon as he heard of the interest.

“There were a few offers from other clubs but once I knew Ipswich wanted me, that was it. I just wanted it to happen,” he told iFollow Ipswich.

“I enjoyed working with the gaffer and Doigy [assistant manager Chris Doig] at Grimsby and to have the chance to work with them again, it was a no-brainer for me.

“It has not been an easy few weeks with all the speculation going on but I took it as a confidence booster that other clubs wanted me.

“I just concentrated on what I could control and just hoped it would get done and now it is, I’m delighted. It’s unbelievable.

“I’ve always wanted to play at the highest level possible and I’ve got the chance now to play in the Championship with Ipswich. I’ve got to take it with both hands.”

Speaking to the Accrington official site, he added: “This time about 13 months ago, I didn’t know where I would be, whether I would be playing first team football at all, now I have a [League Two winner's] medal to look at and it has easily been the best year of my life.

“It has been hard few weeks, there were a few offers from the Championship, I could have stayed in League One and I would have enjoyed it but it’s a good opportunity at a club where I really believe I have the opportunity to play games and score goals in the Championship. It is a dream come true for me from where I was 13 months ago.

“While I have my dream move, it is also quite sad. I loved every minute of my time at Accrington, I had my own song which was great and from day one every Accrington fan has been positive with me.

“I might not have had the best games all the time but the fans never got on my back, I never got an ounce of stick. There may not be 5,000 there every week but they were unbelievable and were class with me.

“I have a lot to thank Accrington for and I think I also helped them. I made memories I will never forget, I got on with everyone at the club and made some friends.

“It’s like a big family at Accrington, it’s a great atmosphere and it’s so easy to settle in, everyone made it so easy for me.”

Jackson is the second player the Blues have signed from Accrington this summer following defender Janoi Donacien.

“It was easy coming to Ipswich as Janoi is obviously already here and I know a few players here as well as the fitness coach [Nathan Winder] from my Barnsley days,” Jackson added.

“I hope I can make my Championship debut soon. I scored for Grimsby on my debut and Accrington on my debut so hopefully I can do the same for Ipswich.

“I am proud of what I did at Accrington and the contribution I made to the club winning the League Two title. Hopefully the money they have from me will help the club too, to be their first £1m player will stay with me.

“I feel so proud of everything we achieved in that season, it was a special season and Accrington will remain one of the first results I look for.”

Stanley boss John Coleman added: “Obviously clubs came in for Kayden and, while he made the right noises about saying he was concentrating on football, his head must have been spinning.

“Kayden did well for us and while we didn’t want to lose him, the most pleasing thing is Accrington are no longer seen as a bargain basement club. Now if anyone wants a striker from us, the starting point is £1 million.

“We have shown that players come here and, with excellent coaching and a great work ethic, they can prosper and coming to Accrington will improve their value.”

Town fended off plenty of competition to land Jackson, indeed Peterborough chairman Darragh MacAntony has revealed that on Monday evening he thought he would become a Posh player. QPR were also in the hunt, while Saturday’s opponents Rotherham and Preston were also both keen earlier in the summer.

Bradford-born Jackson started his professional career with Swindon following success in a 2013 Win a Pro Contract competition run by Samsung when a player with Albion Sports in the Northern Counties East League Division One.

While with the Robins, he had spells on loan at Swindon Supermarine and Oxford City, prior to stints with Tamworth, Wrexham and Barnsley before his loan with Grimsby and his permanent switch to his current club last summer.

I am sure someone cleverer than me will confirm but are we not in profit after this window?

Going to be interesting to see how all the new pieces fit together this season. Looks like we should at worst be a pacier dynamic attack that will be a lot more fun to watch.

From looking at his Accrington highlights reel, I like how he's not afraid to get stuck in with a bit of physical presence & doesn't seem to give up. Also, seems to know when to take a shot and when to team play & pass. Intelligent, pacey, physical, tactical. Should be exciting to watch. About time us fans got to experience that again.

What determines the profit a club makes on a transfer? Is it purely what they paid originally? or does it cover agent costs, clubs costs, salaries, etc?

This has been an interesting summer and certainly the start of a new era for us.

MM has received a lot of stick on here, but what he did well was turn Ipswich from a club with a decimated youth and scouting system and a team full of loans and 'experienced pros' into a team that was capable of competing in the championship (although it was painful to watch). While we still used loans throughout his time, there were at least effective additions rather than the core of our team (think back to all of our loan goalkeepers!). Through his (usually) astute signings and management of the club we can all look to the future with a bit of excitement. Finally.

PH has a clear vision for his Ipswich team, and while many of those players will not have experienced championship football i don't think that will be as much of a problem as some think. The England world cup team lacked experience, and lacked goals in the case of Sterling. However what it did have was a clear and effective way of playing, with players that fit into his system.

I think we will make lots of mistakes this season, and some players will take longer to acclimatise than others. From the outside looking in, the players that PH has brought in look as if they are all determined to be succesful at Ipswich and prove themselves.

I would take a team full of committed Ipswich players with something to prove rather than a team full of loans and prem flops.

Thank you MM...and thank god for PH!

TWTD!

Do I expect all the new signings to work? No. But it would be fantastic if they all did.
Do I expect it to all fit together overnight and we are suddenly unbeatable and going to win the league before Christmas? No.
Do I expect the football to be more entertaining than the last few years …. YES!

Can't keep up with all this. Could the club please issue a photo team sheet at the turnstile and insist that all players have a different haircut from each other.

Welcome to Ipswich Kayden - and good luck

Just wondering how much money we have left in the kitty now -we got £5m and £3.5m for Waggy and Webster (not including top-ups) - and have also trimmed the wage bill with Bru, Hyam, Gleeson, McGoldrick, Carayol - overall 6 players out and now new players in (£1.6m for Kayden, £2m for the 2 Shrewsbury players, £700,000 for Harrison, £700,000 for Edwards, Chalobah/ Roberts/ Fulham lad for free) - so that works out about £8.5m in and only £5m out ? Should be a decent sum left to get an extra centre back i.e. Tilt ?

Huws, Dozzell and Bishop to complement a raft of signings! Pace and passing ability now undoubtedly injected into team attributes. Give the manager and players time before anything else, but there's no denying we are quickly entering a 'pivotal' period running up to the turn of the year! Many of us have cried out for this, so let's embrace it with positivity and put faith in Hurst's bold enterprise!

Welcome to ITFC.

Jackson will bring much-needed pace and tenacity up front. Clearly not afraid to run at defenders and get stuck in. Looking forward to seeing him play. Harrison, Edwards and Jackson could form a quick, dangerous frontline with Nolan or Dozzell providing the ammunition. It may not work out but the football should be more entertaining than the McCarthy era.

We might need to settle for Jackson as a straight swap for Waghorn if this is to be believed, just read this online a little after 3pm today:
(@STVRaman)
Raman Bhardwaj
Told that Josh Windass is currently en route to Wigan to hold talks with the championship side. Understand Rangers have accepted a bid of 2.5m + add-ons. Wigan appear to have have stolen a march on Ipswich.

Don't know what sources the guy has, but if he's right then sounds like we could well be missing out on Windass. Hopefully he's wrong as would like to see him here.

I should add there are other tweets from just an hour before that one saying Windass is en-route to Ipswich, I guess we'll no more soon...
Was feeling this morning like we might get this one done but not feeling so confident now.

TBT. I don't comment on here often but I need to reply to you. You have a very simplistic view of the world. Stats don't lie about stats but they don't show how a player was played by his manager, what his role was, how well and what system the team was playing, etc. However, all of that is missing the point, Hurst knows what system he wants to play and what role he wants Jackson to play within that system. This is part of the reason a player like Waghorn can come here and have a good goal-scoring season after an average one with another team, he's played further upfield or more central or with players he clicks with or whatever. We shouldn't look at the individual players coming in, we need to reserve judgement until we see the results of the sum total, once they are playing as a team. If Hurst gets it right, and I have faith in the man, as should we all in these early days, I believe we will have a team of which to be, rightly, proud. Understandably, this may take a few weeks or months. Until the day we spank someone of quality, our part as fans is to show support for effort when things aren't going so well, and ear-drum bursting volume from the stands when things go swimmingly. All talk on here is just wishful thinking and speculation from people whose hearts are in the right place but, maybe, their brains aren't. Keep it light, keep it entertaining but keep yourself calm....and carry on!
