Garner Joins Wigan for £1.25m
Thursday, 9th Aug 2018 21:03

Town striker Joe Garner has joined Wigan Athletic from the Blues for a fee of £1.25 million with the deal going through moments before the 5pm deadline. TWTD was first to break the news that the Latics had joined Bolton in targeting the 30-year-old earlier this afternoon.

In addition to the fee, the deal also includes top-up clauses, while the frontman has signed a two-year contract at Wigan.

“It’s a great club to be at and I’m excited to be here after speaking to the manager about his ideas, so I’m looking forward to getting out there and helping the lads out,” Garner told iFollow Latics.

“I know how he likes his teams to play and have watched them for quite a few years. He plays attractive football and the result last weekend was a good result so hopefully we can have a few more of them.”

He added: “We had a good year at Ipswich last year and there’s a great group of lads down there. It seems to be very similar here and the boys are a tight group so I’m happy to be on board.

“Hopefully I can add a few more goals and contribute as much as I can. It’s a tough league and there’s some good teams in it. I think we can hold our own though and push on right up there.”

Garner joined Town from Rangers for a fee of £750,000 in June 2017 and the Blackburn-born frontman scored 10 goals in 29 starts and three sub appearances during 2017/18 before his season was curtailed by a small fracture to his skull.

During his spell out towards the end of the season, the former Preston, Nottingham Forest and Carlisle man underwent surgery for shoulder and knee problems.

Having scored the only goal in the behind-closed-doors friendly against Kilmarnock in Spain, a knee injury prevented Garner from taking any further part in pre-season and he wasn’t ready to be included in the 18 for Saturday’s Championship opener against his hometown club.

Garner was understood to be keen to return to his native North-West with his children based in that region.

Town boss Paul Hurst will now look for another striker with EFL clubs able to sign players on loan until the end of the month.

Meanwhile, Wigan have also confirmed the capture of Blues target Josh Windass, 24, from Rangers for £2 million, signing a three-year deal.

So we bring in 9 very exciting players and still have plenty of cash left over through selling 4 players.

Excellent business all round. Well done Town!

Two higher goal scorers from last season gone, let's hope the new boys perform

If that deal was so close, and up to us, then why not, knowing we could have those funds available, sign Windass, or Tilt?

Excellent business, look forward to seeing the ball on the floor rather than Garner now.

1.25M is a hell of a good deal for us financially... The timing of the deal less so.

Never was his biggest fan given the ugly side of his game, but he certainly made an impression in a short time here. He did seem like a piece of McCarthy's jigsaw that wouldn't fit Hurst's. Suspect we'll be all right with Harrison and Jackson but I would've been happier to see this deal happen early enough to bring in another frontman of our own.

Would still like a couple of loans with a view to buy. a number 10 and CB ideally. Garner moving on may be better for a more attractive style of play.

All the best joey, great bit of business from the club! People who say we're short of strikers, still have sears here too

I really rated Joe Garner but this is now and I trust PH and his backroom staff. Good price and good luck JG. Now let's look forward to Saturday COYB.

Absolute joke. We don't have enough forwards to be selling him. I'm 100% backing hurst signings but this shouldn't have happened

Good deal that and happy with the business all round it also means we need another striker now along with a cb, suppose Sears can play striker too though

Great deal for a 30 year old with injury problems who wanted to head back north, was nothing more than average for me, who seemed to look more for the foul than the ball. Gives the likes of Morris and Folami to push for a place before Hurst looks at bringing someone else in

don't need to replace, im sure Morris can step up...

Blue_Heath is correct no more Garner on the floor and a £500k profit again!
Windass was probably out of our budget and was probably offered better terms at Wigan. It sounds like Tilt was over priced for what we wanted to pay. I for one, dont really care. All of the signings made are very good, young players, not with ego's. Just one more centre back as cover for Chambers and N'siala, but glad weve kept Knudsen.

Waffleman I do agree with your statement but 1.25 mill for a 30 year old garner with a big injury record is something that can't be refused, we defo need another striker and cb, don't know why we couldn't push it a touch further for tilt ??

Disappointed in this. Joe is s decent Championship striker, good in the air.

We are short of strikers, so why didn't Evans hold his nerve and get the Windass deal done?? Seems like Wigan held back on the Garner deal knowing ME was unlikely to release the cash and they could nip in and sign Windass!!

Very Cute.

Into the loan market it is then, gotta admit I hate a loss of loans it's quite unsettling, 1 or 2 is ok but anymore is an issue

That is a cracking profit for a 30 year old who's been injured and had his best days arguably.
As someone pointed out however, would have been surely sense to pay the extra and secure Tilt today too.

This really is Paul Hurst's team now.
I think he rates Sears.
Given some game time in a favoured position, he could fulfil his potential and become our tenth new man of the managers reign?

We'll need to get a cb on loan but with two promising young academy graduates, do we need another striker?

Smithy, deano85, Agreed.

So our last Manager truly endowed us with assets to sell & realise tremendous profits so that PH can start us off with the squad of his choosing ; lets see them perform ,raise the standard and by hook or by crook score lots of goals .Having lost three who were major contributors , the new boys have targets to meet , boots to fill AND we must still find some goals from the midfielders etc .
Maybe soon we can get in a CB on loan for experience and resolution ,plus organising abilities and power are much needed !
Come on you Blues !

Garner was always rolling around on the floor looking for fouls and feigning injury. Didn't particularly like his style of play.
