Garner Joins Wigan for £1.25m
Thursday, 9th Aug 2018 21:03

Town striker Joe Garner has joined Wigan Athletic from the Blues for a fee of £1.25 million with the deal going through moments before the 5pm deadline. TWTD was first to break the news that the Latics had joined Bolton in targeting the 30-year-old earlier this afternoon.

In addition to the fee, the deal also includes top-up clauses, while the frontman has signed a two-year contract at Wigan.

“It’s a great club to be at and I’m excited to be here after speaking to the manager about his ideas, so I’m looking forward to getting out there and helping the lads out,” Garner told iFollow Latics.

“I know how he likes his teams to play and have watched them for quite a few years. He plays attractive football and the result last weekend was a good result so hopefully we can have a few more of them.”

He added: “We had a good year at Ipswich last year and there’s a great group of lads down there. It seems to be very similar here and the boys are a tight group so I’m happy to be on board.

“Hopefully I can add a few more goals and contribute as much as I can. It’s a tough league and there’s some good teams in it. I think we can hold our own though and push on right up there.”

Garner joined Town from Rangers for a fee of £750,000 in June 2017 and the Blackburn-born frontman scored 10 goals in 29 starts and three sub appearances during 2017/18 before his season was curtailed by a small fracture to his skull.

During his spell out towards the end of the season, the former Preston, Nottingham Forest and Carlisle man underwent surgery for shoulder and knee problems.

Having scored the only goal in the behind-closed-doors friendly against Kilmarnock in Spain, a knee injury prevented Garner from taking any further part in pre-season and he wasn’t ready to be included in the 18 for Saturday’s Championship opener against his hometown club.

Garner was understood to be keen to return to his native North-West with his children based in that region.

Town boss Paul Hurst will now look for another striker with EFL clubs able to sign players on loan until the end of the month.

Meanwhile, Wigan have also confirmed the capture of Blues target Josh Windass, 24, from Rangers for £2 million, signing a three-year deal.

Jimmy p45 yes we've made a healthy profit all players purchased by MM.
What have we done with the money?

Flooded the team with league 1 and 2 players.
We seem to be living in a fantasy world of hope at the moment if the gamble doesn't pay off I wonder if Mr Hurst will be so popular.

I think we have done a very good bit of business and still have money in the kitty for the January window.
I'm sure Paul has players in mind for loans with the possibility of signing them in January. We have signed Hungary players with a lot to prove so let's be patient, get behind the team and trust in the manager.

Our club has never been able to compete with the big boys transfer wise. All our good managers have dealt in the lower divisions.
Watched a programe about Bill Shankley.
His team of the early 70s included many players from lower leagues including Keegan , Clemence & Neal.
This team went onto dominate European soccer

Good old Evans. Would not spend an extra £150k to bring in a rated centre back and then sells Garner at the last minute. It's a good profit but he has now made about £5m profit in the past couple of months so surely Tilt could have been secured. We have very little depth in the squad.

Best of luck Joe - a decent player for us but not as gutted as losing Waghorn! But I am looking forward to seeing the new players. Already impressed with Edwards.

C'mon BlueandTrue - we sold Garner for £1.25M and bought him for near a £1M (not doubled) and a 'scrapper' who scored 10 goals despite being injured for a number of games and brings something different than the incoming striking players (good in the air). Do people really think Evans is going to spend the rest of the pocket money he has from this transfer window in the January one? I don't.

Hmmmmmm...

So am I right in thinking that we've sold:
Waghorn £7.5m
Webster £3.5m
Garner £1.25m
Knight £1m

Total : £13.25m (ish)

And brought in:
Jackson £2m
Nolan/Nsiala £2m
Edwards 750k
Harrison 750k
Donacien 750k

Total £6.1m (ish)

Just can't help thinking that the last 24 hours has put a sour taste in my mouth after some good business uptil then..I know we'd have struggled to keep Waggy but replacing our star player with a league 2 striker is worrying me,then missing out on Windass & long term target Tilt (we wasted too much time on that one)..then flogging Garner at the last minute without buying a replacement...

Time will tell I guess but i'm a bit concerned we've taken maybe too many gambles here on too many lower league players..would've been perfectly happy with 4 or 5 but 9 seems very risky..surely we should've signed at least 1 or 2 experienced championship players just to be on the safe side?

But hey,like I say,time will tell...🤞🏻🤞🏻

Lightning Boy---tend to agree, a lot to take in but seems a lot of experience has been ditched for raw youth.

We still sort of have the spine in Bart,Chambo,Skuse and Knudsen so may be ok.

I am a little concerned-----big win at Rotherham will help though!!

Shame Skuse didn't go but wouldn't have been able to sell him for much...but agree with above comments.

Not fussed he has gone. Hopefully now we can get a CB and maybe a Striker on loan with the Garner cash.

I love some on here trying to spend the owners money for him. In case you hadn't noticed we are in a whole load of debt and lose a load of money each year too. Perhaps Evans is trying to lower the debt a bit in the process of all these transactions.

Great shout about the rolling around I saw him in the derby at home and that was my lasting impression

Completely agree Kirbmeister. If you add in that alleged 2m of sponsorship money then Evans has probably clawed back a bit more revenue, and why not FFS, after all it is a business for him.

Why SWN?

Under Mick we were static, I think Mick did a lot of good for the club I really do but it had reached its end and atbtheb end of the day Mick walked..... before he was pushed perhaps but he chose to leave.

Signing comming in, all eager, all 26 and under, young up and comming manager.

Yes it might go wrong but surely we have to try. How far to merry go round appointments get you?

Time for some fresh thinking. Managers are like ex girlfriends. At some point you have to man up, get on tinder and get over it.

COYB worse case at least we have a lot of league 1 experience if needed next season a likelihood if the bookies are to be believed. Nothing will be worse than what could have been with another season with Mick!

We've cashed in on a striker who wanted to leave.. a defender who has been injured for large parts and a striker who didn't fit into the managers plans..
And brought in a good selection of hungry talented fit young players..
We ve played one game..
And still the moaners moan.
The football will be better than that served up over the last 10 yrs...
If we all support the team with the same positive enthusiasm as PH managers this season, win lose or draw we will help them become the players and team we desperately want.
