Hurst Eyeing Up to Three Loanees Before Deadline
Thursday, 23rd Aug 2018 16:20

Blues boss Paul Hurst is looking to sign up to three players on loan before the August 31st deadline but was unable to report any progress on that front at his Thursday lunchtime press conference.

“Unfortunately nothing’s changed since we spoke Tuesday evening,” he said. “We’ve got another week of me checking my phone. I think for all of our sakes we’ll be glad when it’s [at an end].”

Hurst has previously said he’s after a striker and a centre-half but he is also considering a third addition: “Maybe three.”

With three players currently on loan and only five permitted in a matchday squad, that third further addition could depend on when Janoi Donacien’s permanent leave to remain is confirmed.

“That’s the difficult one,” Hurst said. “I’m told that that situation has moved forward but we haven’t had a definite, ‘Right, that’s done’, so it would make it more awkward.

“That ends up being a decision I have to make. But we’ve got to be able to get the players in first and foremost.”

As soon as confirmation is received, Donacien’s move from Accrington Stanley will switch from a loan to a £750,000 permanent transfer whether inside or outside a transfer window.

Hurst says he’d ideally like the St Lucian’s situation to be resolved so he wouldn’t be forced to omit a sixth loanee from his 18 each match if he lands the three more signings.

“That way I’m not having to leave anyone out and if it came to it and the options were out there and that’s what I felt was right for us,” he said.

“I’m not saying that I wouldn’t do it, but I think I have said right from the start it’s not an ideal situation and I’d prefer not to be in that scenario.

“When we signed Janoi I didn’t expect it to be something which would cause us an issue on that side, so hopefully it can be resolved and we get confirmation that he is a permanent signing.”

Speaking at the weekend, club secretary Stuart Hayton outlined the position as it stands: “He’s waiting for his passport back, without telling you too much of his confidential information.

“Once he gets a passport back that has a stamp in that says he has leave to remain then we can make the deal permanent and he becomes our player.”

Asked whether the third man targeted would be an attacking wide player, Hurst added: “Yes, quite possibly.”

Quizzed on whether there are there offers on the table and if in some cases clubs have said they might need to get a player in before they can let one go, Hurst said: “That’s a fair summary on both counts.”

Regarding players moving out on loan, with Tristan Nydam and Barry Cotter among those who could be allowed out for spells, Hurst says there have been no developments.

“Yes, as it stands no one’s been in for any of the player on loan currently,” he continued. “It wouldn’t surprise me if we did get a few calls, partly on [the U23s 8-0 win against Hull on Monday].

“It’s difficult if you go and watch that sort of game though because are you simply going to look at the player or are you going to factor in the opposition etc. But some players did do very well, so we’ll see if anyone gets in touch.”

How can we make the deal permanent if he gets his "stamp in the passport" outside of the transfer window?

Just please get 3 in with some experience at this level - don't dither and miss out on the final day - we can worry about leaving one out of the matchday squad after next Friday.

Fairly obvious we need more firepower.

Paul never mind about getting enquiries following the 8-0 win for the U.23's lets at least start to look if some of those very impressive youngsters could step up, cheap and could be just the right thing to do.

James Collins is free and would be a decent experienced addition for a season!!

Agree that we could do with some more proven quality, but also can't help thinking that we'd then have about 12/13 new players all trying to settle in at once? We have already signed too many players in a single go, in my opinion.

Whoever they are they need to be championship experienced not league 1 or league 2 hopefuls! There is not sufficient experience available in the squad to progress! When the quality of players in last seasons squad is lost some of them need to be replaced with players of the same standard to maintain or improve standards .

The freebies look worth a shout, Robert Huth, Gareth Mcauley, yacub from wba? Might be a sound shout to get some real experience in, settle the nerves and give them someone to learn off

i know we need championship experience given where we are in league already, but looking back to all the lower league signings from the last few weeks, i can't help but think there was a man down the road at colchester we should of been looking to pinch among those! he might of been a much better choice than some of the other ones we've got. i'd much prefer to see edwards (more than happy with him) and dickenson lining up in our starting 11 than ward and sears. such a shame about ward and sears as both looked cracking when we first signed them but all that early promise seems to have gone totally to waste. we could argue that sears wasn't helped going out on the wing but i do fear we might not ever see him get his mojo back for ipswich again although of course i'd love him to prove me wrong as i was a big fan of his when he looked so lively in the first few months after joining us. and ward against barnsley looked superb that second half, but he's never really come close to the form he showed in that dream debut since.

If tilt is coming in does it meaneed an exit for chambers. He tries hard but I always feel he is a mistake waiting to happen

I would be happy to get Tilt in the door because (a) he looks a really decent composed defender who can make the step up to Championship football l, and (b) it would put a positive end to a very frustrating episode.

Sadly , I'm not confident we've got it right , or will get it right ; lots of younger elements introduced ,but no real evidence to date that we've acquired wit and incision in any important areas ,
PH needs to demonstrate that energy on the front foot alone is enough to progress in this division , and it doesn't look good enough to date .Wiser heads and experience amongst our fellow teams will negate our efforts unless we see greater imagination from the top down !
Come on you Blues !

Nakhi Wells and Tomer Hemed, two players with very good records at championship level.
Was hoping we'd bring one of those in up top to help Harrison.

So aas'ole1010, you don't rate any of Hurst's signings then? Not even Edwards? Perhaps you got more turned on by some of Mick's old 30+ loans like the Huntcore brothers?

Not sure how much we have for wages but Gareth mcauley is a free and so is nedum onhua that was decent for QPR and I believe Victor anichebe is a free and may provide some power up front.

For goodness sake people, hes building a team. There are no quick fixes, especially on our budget. Give the man a chance.
