Town Confirm Pennington Loan Signing
Friday, 31st Aug 2018 17:33

Town have confirmed the signing of Everton defender Matthew Pennington on a season-long loan.

The 23-year-old, who has been handed the number five shirt, spent last season on loan at Leeds, who are also reported to have been interested this summer along with Blackburn and Wigan.

Pennington, who also previously had spells on loan at Tranmere, Coventry and Walsall, made 15 starts and nine sub appearances during his stint at Elland Road last season.

The 6ft 1in tall centre-half or right-back has made seven starts - six in the Premier League - and one sub appearance for Everton, having come through the ranks after joining them as an 11-year-old.

Pennington, whose only senior goal for the Toffeemen came in a 3-1 Merseyside derby defeat at Anfield in April 2017, signed a contract which runs to 2021 in May.

The Warrington-born defender is Town's sixth loanee - manager Paul Hurst's 12th summer signing in total - and looks set to go straight into the team facing Norwich at Portman Road on Sunday with Toto Nsiala suspended for three games after his red card appeal was dismissed.

Poor signing. Would rather have an ageing McAuley or De Vos. Hurst out!!

Have to say wasn't great at Leeds but we obviously need a central defender would have rathered a more experienced defender to help them players taking the stpep up but time will tell if he will be a good signing

Well desperation or what? All things considered, a very uninspiring Transfer window with evans again pocketing the cash. At least we have a sports science ethos, as Evans told us in his interview:

Welcome to ITFC Matt. Great opportunity for you to prove yourself at this level, and to create real competition for a place in central defence.

Batram98 Did you regularly see him play for Leeds or is it just hearsay, like a lot of posts are on here.

uh oh... shame as we flirted with the idea of a couple of very good defensive signings.... Im sure the lad will add something, but not the leadership we need. Lets hope the boys outscore the opposition, because an abundance of clean sheets seems unlikely. COYB

First of all, welcome to Ipswich Matt, I hope you have a succesfull season with us!!

Anyone moaning about this. Please can I remind you that we took a highly rated youngster on loan from Everton last season, and you lot all turned out to be pretty happy with him.

Give the lad a chance for god sake, he's not even been at the club for an hour!

Let's give the lad a chance and not write him off before he's kicked a ball. By all accounts Leeds paid a 500k loan fee for him and he was named Coventry player of the season when he was there playing under Tony Mowbray. Signed a new deal until 2021 at Everton so it looks like people rate him.

Jusus Christ talk about shooting the poor guy down. Let's see how he does before we judge.
Sunday a big game for all no matter how experience they are. A win and everyone is a hero then

panic and not what we need be better to use Jonas in a back 3 Hurst will need a good win and a run of them to stop the negativity creeping in. MM had to go but this is looking like the bookies were right. But the only way is up from here.

All our time wasted on the tilt deal and this is what we are left with god help us if he starts in the Darby game needed someone with more exsperance especially in the position we find ourselves in already no experience of this league and we are shipping goals putting a young kid in would not be my choice move Knudsen across and play Kenlock at least the players know each other

So who out of Donacien, Chalobah, Edun, Graham, Walters and Pennington will be left out of the matchday squad? Donacien and Chalobah are gonna play, I assume Pennington will be thrown straight in and Walters will surely be at least on the bench. So it'll be Graham or Edun.
Phil - any more updates on Doancien's situation?

Mickmacterry, what a stupid comment. I guess we the name you are a be careful what you wish for. Give Hurst a chance has had to sell the best players and hasn't been given all the cash from the owner. The lad hasn't even kicked a ball, give him a chance!
