Lambert to Be Confirmed Town Boss in Next 48 Hours
Thursday, 25th Oct 2018 19:50

Paul Lambert will be confirmed as Town’s new manager within the 48 hours, TWTD understands.

Paul Hurst’s short spell as Blues boss ended this afternoon with the former Shrewsbury manager, his assistant Chris Doig, fitness coach Nathan Winder and physio Chris Skitt also leaving the club.

Hurst's stint of 149 days and 15 games is the shortest in the club's professional history.

Owner Marcus Evans has sounded out a number of potential new managers over the last couple of weeks - ex-Millwall boss Ian Holloway, former Villa boss Tim Sherwood and Leicester assistant manager Michael Appleton among them - following Town’s disastrous start to the season.

Evans relieved Hurst of his duties this afternoon with the players, who had been given the day off, called to Playford Road to be given the news.

We understand Lambert, 49, is expected at the club tomorrow with the loose ends relating to his recruitment expected to be tied up in time for confirmation of his appointment either tomorrow or Saturday. It's believed he will sign a three-year deal.

In the meantime, Bryan Klug has been reappointed caretaker-manager and will be in charge at the Den. The academy head of coaching and player development will take tomorrow's press conference, which won't be shown on Facebook Live.

Lambert’s assistant is likely to be former Norwich defender Ian Culverhouse, who resigned from his position as manager of Grantham Town last week. Culverhouse, 54, previously worked alongside Lambert at Colchester United, Norwich City and Aston Villa.

Lambert was last in a job earlier this year, taking charge of Stoke City in January but leaving in May following the Potters’ relegation to the Championship.

Previously he was in charge at Wolves, Blackburn and Villa, but is most remembered in East Anglia for his stint in charge at Norwich between 2009 and 2012 during which he took them from League One to the Premier League in successive seasons.

The Scot had joined the Canaries from Colchester United where he had spent just under a year. The U's had defeated Norwich 7-1 on the opening day of 2009/10.

His managerial career started at Livingston, where he finished his playing days, before he moved on to Wycombe.

A midfielder, he played for St Mirren, Motherwell, Borussia Dortmund - with whom he won the Champions League - and Celtic as well as Livingston and won 40 caps for Scotland, scoring once.

Think the fact that some people are against Lambert because he used to manage Norwich is ridiculous. He's always seemed a people-person, and right now we need someone who can galvanise the team.

This could go two ways, staying up or tits up!

I have a suspicion tits up looking more likely.

However I have supported the club for 30 years, I have a season ticket and this is my club so he has my support.

At last an experienced high level manager and with European experience. Dont mind the Budgies connection - we are in the sh** and need to swallow that particular pill. He will have great connections in the game so expecting higher quality players to come in in January. ME expected to open the purse strings.

He has a good record at this level so good luck to him. His main failures are at Premier League level. Forget his Norwich past, he's here now and I personally will be right behind him.

If there has ever been a time to stand behind the club, it's now. This is the bleakest it's look in over half a century. If we turn on the new manger before he's set foot in the grounds, we're done. Forget who he has worked for and focus on who he is working with now.

Time for some fans to get over themselves. This is about one thing, and one thing only and that's making sure we survive. Anything else on top of that is a bonus. If you are bothered about the Norwich connection, get a life or get lost! COYB

But I will always support the team

Dear me...I reckon Evans has had this in the pipeline since the international break, as mentioned he's hardly done much since Norwich in 2012, in fact lost more games than won.

Saw the bookies odds on SKY a while ago and not a sign of Warburton or Burley on it.

So it looks like a surprising pull out of the hat again from Evans, I feel a bit underwhelmed to be honest and would have liked Klug to take over temporarily whilst considering but looks like that will only happen for 1 game. Third time lucky for a Paul?...he'll need it with the squad left behind.

Well now all things considered, it seems to me that at our investment level is only going to buy us a choice between ‘entertainment' and league position. Now that we're bottom and failing, it seems most would prefer position over entertainment, despite the tatt that Mick served up. He did always say that he would entertain when he could afford to.
I'm afraid I can't welcome a budgie take-over At our club. This seeems like a panic appointment to me, these guys will have no pride in our badge whatsoever. So a bit like the owner.
Obviously here's hoping but i'll Be putting early money on an away defeat at Carrot roahd.

I am not overly excited by this but he has the experience so we must gte behind him if he is going to be our next manager - Look at one of our previous managers being a Naarrwich player and look how that turned out - could be a Royle2 in disguise!

Right - I never enjoyed the football under MM but appreciated what he did with what we have. I was underwhelmed by Hurst but willing to support and see if the new direction may just work.
I support Ipswich Town and have had a season ticket for nearly 30 years. We need one thing right now, a manager that will work hard, get the payers on side and playing and most importantly save us from relegation.
I'd rather have Lambert with his past connections that half the other names mentioned and I believe he is professional enough to do the job he is paid to do for the club that employed him. I will support him and hope we give him true support from the start I will judge him on what happens on the pitch not on one of his previous ten employers in football. We need to grow up and see what developments and give the guy a chance.

Let's back him, if he does for us what he did for Norwich I'll be happy.

Right now we must stay up. That is all that matters.

If Hurst had lost the dressing room that's 12 of his signings he's lost including 3 he has managed before.....

The club needs us more than ever.

Good manager and dont care if he once managed Norwich. He is Scottish and from Glasgow so doubt he really gives two hoots about them and see them as someone he managed once. He sued them for 2 million quid so no love lost there.
John Deehan, Bif Fat Joe all settled in well here and and people need to have a reality check as he is the perfect fit to get us out of this mess and will be just a job at another club to him.

Living in the Potteries let me assure the doubters he was much preferred and still is by Stoke fans to Rowett, his work ethic was never questioned.
Much better than the likes of another dinosaur like Holloway, give him a chance, however, Evans has to back him in January.
Tactically and fitness we will be much better.

Was it Ian culverhouse who scored that cracking own goal when Brian Gunn miss kicked. If so, let's keep the pitch in good condition. Alternatively he may have always had a soft spot for Ipswich. lol

Come on town fans lets get real...... We are deep in the manure and currently need an experienced manager to help us out of this deep rut we are in. Like all town fans I hate the scum but let's get behind Lambert and Culverhouse and support ITFC. Well said Londonblue1983!

I can't believe the stuff on here about how we don't want him because of Norwich.

The guy got a job offer from a club better than his current club at the time. He took the job and did very well there. He got another (seemingly better) offer to join another club (Villa), which he took.

It's a job guys. Get over yourselves.

We care about the rivalry but why would some Scotsman who was just doing a job?

Not too worried about Lambert, sure he will do a good job. Really gutted about Hurst, deserved his chance, but everything that could go wrong did. Shame. Ian Culverhouse on the other hand FFS!!! Ha.
