Lambert to Be Confirmed Town Boss in Next 48 Hours
Thursday, 25th Oct 2018 19:50

Paul Lambert will be confirmed as Town’s new manager within the 48 hours, TWTD understands.

Paul Hurst’s short spell as Blues boss ended this afternoon with the former Shrewsbury manager, his assistant Chris Doig, fitness coach Nathan Winder and physio Chris Skitt also leaving the club.

Hurst's stint of 149 days and 15 games is the shortest in the club's professional history.

Owner Marcus Evans has sounded out a number of potential new managers over the last couple of weeks - ex-Millwall boss Ian Holloway, former Villa boss Tim Sherwood and Leicester assistant manager Michael Appleton among them - following Town’s disastrous start to the season.

Evans relieved Hurst of his duties this afternoon with the players, who had been given the day off, called to Playford Road to be given the news.

We understand Lambert, 49, is expected at the club tomorrow with the loose ends relating to his recruitment expected to be tied up in time for confirmation of his appointment either tomorrow or Saturday. It's believed he will sign a three-year deal.

In the meantime, Bryan Klug has been reappointed caretaker-manager and will be in charge at the Den. The academy head of coaching and player development will take tomorrow's press conference, which won't be shown on Facebook Live.

Lambert’s assistant is likely to be former Norwich defender Ian Culverhouse, who resigned from his position as manager of Grantham Town last week. Culverhouse, 54, previously worked alongside Lambert at Colchester United, Norwich City and Aston Villa.

Lambert was last in a job earlier this year, taking charge of Stoke City in January but leaving in May following the Potters’ relegation to the Championship.

Previously he was in charge at Wolves, Blackburn and Villa, but is most remembered in East Anglia for his stint in charge at Norwich between 2009 and 2012 during which he took them from League One to the Premier League in successive seasons.

The Scot had joined the Canaries from Colchester United where he had spent just under a year. The U's had defeated Norwich 7-1 on the opening day of 2009/10.

His managerial career started at Livingston, where he finished his playing days, before he moved on to Wycombe.

A midfielder, he played for St Mirren, Motherwell, Borussia Dortmund - with whom he won the Champions League - and Celtic as well as Livingston and won 40 caps for Scotland, scoring once.

Ffs we need a manager with a connection to us not out rivals. Why would we bring in someone who's last job was getting relegated seems stupid.

What about Mark Warburton?
Progressive football and has built up a tram of unfancied players in the past

Stuart Watson bang on in EADT this morning. Would Paul Lambert have been the 1st choice in the summer. No. Is he the best choice available available manager right now. Yes he probably is. I don't have a problem with his previous connection with that lot up the road. Anyway it was years ago. Think what sick budgies they would be if he took us to Sparrow Road and won. I really care about what he can do for us if/when he is appointed. We are in the dirty smelly stuff and his record is a strong one to get us out of it.

Ok.... Kieron Richardson is without a club.... I know....But Lambert knows him, he seems to have found god and gone through bit of Kieron Dyes revelation. He is a player that had all the talent but perhaps lacked application... would to me, be a good option for LB competition.

Woschield and Huth also free, both German, would better than current options.

Strikers are bloody thin on the ground though.... Anchchibe as Bebatov, Rossi and the like see out of our price range.

If we added those 3 defenders I think we'd get steel and guile, Probs can't afford Huth tho.

Given the situation we are in, we need an experienced manager to come in and keep us up! Whether he is the man for the job, time will only tell, but I hope he is.

In a way it would be nice if an ex Norwich manager keeps us up, and then beats Norwich at Carrow road... something nice about that!

Lets all get behind him and support the team, they are going to need all the support they can get!

Owner humiliated by the Hurst affair. It exposes yet again his incompetence in appointing managers. Mick is the exception to the rule.

Why would Lambert want the job, given the low-grade playing staff available for the next two months at least and probable lack of funds thereafter? Because he's out of work and desperate. Lambert's best days are behind him. Did a good job at Norwich and nothing since.

Desperate manager meets incompetent owner. Don't raise your hopes.

Makes me chuckle all the big voted posts on the Lambert appointment are once again ALL about getting behind the manager and being 'positive' as per when Hurst came here and that now we need experience (simply as we got the wrong inexperienced manager in the first place). I can understand the divisiveness of his Norwich connections but come on folks there must be better managers who have done more in the last few years than Lambert available!?!...I bet a fair percentage who were right behind Hurst are now behind this appointment.

I couldn't give a monkey's chuff if he ex nodge boss , this club is at rock bottom, we our a shambles , so if he can make us a better team and keep us up so be it , but our pathetic owner Evan's has got to man up and for once be an owner and give him at least the wage structure to bring in better 0layers or significant funds in Jan to have any chance of keeping us up .... goodluck Lambert if it is you .. but come on Hurst don't bottle it again with funds....

I think Hursts appointment got a 90% approval rating so whilst we can all now slate him for it how many of us would have gone a diffrent route?

Blueboy would have.... not many others....

Make no mistake Lambert is no fan of Norwich - and Norwich is no fan of Lambert .... !!!

This could just put the fire in the belly that's needed right now, for the Manager, and our Club may just benefit from it all .......... after all it creates some intrigue, and can't be any worse.

Survival this season will be a massive success story.
As some have already pointed out, not all Managers would be tempted with what we currently have to offer - therefore choice would be somewhat reduced in reality.

Whatever, support whoever comes in - agree with it, or not. COME ON YOU BLUES - yet another new dawn ........ we hope ...!!!

I did as well (a different route)...amazing the approval Hurst got from an untested manager at this level. I think too many got carried away with a young manager with a good track record to that date...

All you lot moaning need to sort yourselves out. We are in need of something to happen and if its Lambert that can do it then we all need to get behind him. I'm almost embarrassed to be a town fan at the moment, not because of our team but because of our whining fans who moan at anything and evetything. Stop moaning and get behind your bloody team instead!!!! COYB!!!!!

A few Norwich fans have told me that Lambert needs Culverhouse on board to take care of the coaching. Lambert is better suited at motivating the players and keeping things in line. Hopefully this would partly explain why Lambert has been ineffective since leaving Norwich as I don't think he's had Culverhouse along for the ride since. Perhaps just like Brian Clough needed Peter Taylor, Lambert needs Culverhouse. If so let's make sure we get him on board as well (even if he is an ex-Budgie which I was cracking a few jokes about yesterday) as we can't afford to do things by half measures given the state we are in.
While admittedly Lambert isn't the choice I would of made, if he's the man then so be it. Let's give him a chance and hope he can work some magic. And if this doesn't work out and we end up in League One still, then please can we get George Burley in next season in to hit the reset button and let him rebuild from the ground up.
Hopefully Lambert does the business and we won't need to look back again but always good to have a plan B (plan Burley) just in case!

Come on people - rally round.

I didn't like the McCarthy or Hurst appointment, I'm equally not convinced about the projected Lambert situation either - BUT wherever we are in terms of table, management flux, or whatever - we are IPSWICH TOWN - which should mean something to every single one of us.

Onward and Upwards. The Club needs unity more than possibly ever before.

Don't really care about his previous clubs. It's a job for these guys like for the rest of us, you do you best for the person that's paying you salary. Whether they wear blue, red stripe or the disgusting yellow and green, he will be judged on results and he gets us out of this bloody great hole we are in then he could be the best manager we have had in recent years..... although that's not saying much.

Regardless of who we get in the club is in a massive downward spiral and we are heading into League 1. IMO it could be much worse and we could be the next Coventry.

We have an owner who doesn't want to invest, an MD who knows nothing about football and many coaches who are poorly paid or don't have the right skills/qualifications (and I am not just talking about the first team).

There is no leadership or focus.

Such a sad day today is on some many fronts.

If and it is likely when the results do not improve the Norwich association will become a factor- after 18 months of fan unrest I am not sure that this decision is a uniting one.

I'm still not over the 5-1 defeat and admire Lambert for that team and the 3 seasons they had - but deep down I might well hate him for it as well.
Never as much as I hate Paul jewell
