Hurst More Determined After Town Sacking as Claim Lambert to Be Handed £10m War Chest
Sunday, 28th Oct 2018 10:11

Ex-Town boss Paul Hurst says his sacking by the Blues makes him more determined to be a success elsewhere in the future, while it’s reported that new manager Paul Lambert was lured to Portman Road by a £10 million war chest.

Hurst’s 149-day Town reign was brought to a close at 3.30pm on Thursday via a 10-minute phone call from owner Marcus Evans. Assistant manager Chris Doig, fitness coach Nathan Winder and physio Chris Skitt also left the club.

“This only makes me more determined to be a success in the future,” Hurst told The Sun on Sunday. “Looking back now there are things I would probably change but I have no regrets.

“And now it’s time for me to sit by the phone again and hope that I get a different kind of call.

“When I get it I will be ready and I aim to make sure the experience with Ipswich will only make me better at my job.”

The 44-year-old added: “I don’t feel like I am damaged goods now. Sometimes you have to take a step backwards to go forwards and I have complete belief that I will become a top manager.”

We understand Town will pay Hurst a low six-figure sum to settle his contract, which was due to run until 2021.

Meanwhile, the The Sun on Sunday claims new boss Lambert, who was appointed yesterday on a deal also until 2021, was tempted to take the job at Portman Road by a £10 million January war chest.

While a sum of that size would be a huge surprise given Town’s approach in recent seasons, and owner Evans's much-vaunted Five-Point Plan, Lambert will certainly have some cash to spend during the transfer window as the bottom-of-the-table Blues look to avoid relegation to the third tier for the first time in 62 years.

Lambert, 49, is meeting the players and coaching staff at Playford Road for the first time today having watched yesterday’s dismal 3-0 defeat at Millwall along with his new coaching team, from left to right, first-team coach Matt Gill, assistant manager Stuart Taylor, Lambert and fitness coach Jim Henry. He will be unveiled to the media on Tuesday.

Good luck, Paul. So sorry it didn't work out for you. You're an alright young manager and I'm sure you'll land yourself a job sooner rather than later. All the best buddy.

"£10 million war chest" ehhh???
Well excuse me, but since it's the venerable 'The Sun' which is the source + knowing Ebeneezer Evans & his immaculate mouthpiece's shall we politely call it: *Inherent Susceptibility* for telling Porkies and not exactly keeping promises especially on the transfer front.... well then I respectfully think I will just: "Believe it when I see it" ! :-D :-D

Most of all we need the Owner to commit, and wise up, as to how to own a successful Football Club.

The shambles at Millwall yesterday bore no resemblance at all, to what we have come to expect from an Ipswich Town team.

Still feel for Hurst, a lovely bloke who I would loved to have seen be the man to bring success tho this club. But unfortunately you were out of your depth, and made some very damaging decisions. All the best mate.

£10 million seems extremely unlikely, but investment is undoubtably needed to that squad. If it is to be £10 million, then it is extremely frustrating that Evans has Waited for a situation as serious as this to spend that sort of money. Could have done with that sort of money years ago to invest in the squad when we were around the play offs

Nothing surprising in PH's comments - take it in the chin, learn some hard lessons and move on. Nothing to hold against him - he did his best, but it was a gamble that just did not work. Wish him well for the future.

As for a £10M war chest for PL come January, let's hope ME really does put his money where the Sun's mouth is! Joking apart, it's blindingly obvious that investment is needed to improve quality. Would have thought PL would have asked for assurances that it would be forthcoming, as a condition of accepting the job. However, attracting that quality to the club is another matter.

Good Luck Paul H and all the best for your future.

Like so many, myself included, who have been in a similar situation during their career, you'll be smarting this morning and thinking of all the 'If Only' 'Why's and 'Maybe's, believe me (providing, and I'm sure you will) take on board the learnings from your short time at ITFC, the experiences (good or bad) will stand you in great stead for your future. Good Luck and Thanks.

I think that should read, £10k war chest...

I can believe £10m I think its been part of the long term plan for a long while reading between the lines. Roy Keane was given £12M was it? And that was without having sold anybody. I think the plan to get the Accadamy in order with enough promising youngsters to work with along side the plan to get a group of young hungry Lower league players to improve was allways going to be supplemented by spending a big some at the rite time on a few big hitters. I think that is why Mick Mcarthy was so bitter and tried to cling on during the bad times because he knew it was coming. Safe to say I think the big spending is probably being advanced by a season or two now the shiz is hitting the fan and Paul Hurst hasn't worked out.

Wouldn't surprise me if there is some truth in the £10m figure. A last roll of the dice by Evans, perhaps, because the cost of a even a short spell in League One will be considerably more.

£10m doesn't go very far in the Championship these days and luring players to Town will be difficult if we are still cut adrift by January. But it could be enough to bring in a few out-of-favour Premier League players on short-term contracts.

I remember hearing the owner say transfer money of similar figures (from previous sales) would be made available to managers for purchases too. We'll either find out it'll be the equivalent 5.5m on lower league players or about 300k on players with Championship wages going by history.

It's going to be tough for anyone to get us out of this now, even with that kind of money purely on transfer fees in January. We'll probably be too far behind and prices get inflated in that window. There aren't many players with the quality we need who would want to come to a club in our position anyway.

As much as others would no doubt disagree, I'm convinced we would be in a far different situation if the owner had given Hurst that £10m in Summer instead. Probably that other guy who abuses teacups would too.

I think, and I hope I am right, that in a couple of weeks you will see a complete change in our fortune. I've numerous sources tell me how horrendous PH and CD were, all sources independent of one another, all absolutely corroborate each other! The truth will come out eventually. Yes we've been left with a squad that's lacking but the right set up in place, can get what's needed out of them. I feel we've got that now, and the man management will see us alright. Confidence is key, patience required over the next few weeks from us fans, watch this space!!

I was very optimistic when PH joined (admittedly I always am) but sadly it hasn't worked out - now we move on and get behind Lambert. I believe he's the right man to turn this around. Obviously you take the reports of £10m with a pinch of salt but reallistically some money will need spending, so why not make it £10m because surely going down to L1 would be more costly in the end?

Need that £10M in all honesty...amazing if true how Evans only shells out when we're in trouble, after 2016/17 when we finished a lowly 16th and needed recruitments it was the first time he spent more than he sold in 4 seasons with Garner/Waghorn/Huws deals.

Any other time as tight as a U-boats hatch at a 1000 fathoms, could of kicked on in 2015/16 after our play-off season but he was miserly spending only just over £1M whilst Mings went out for £8M!!...

Good luck Paul. I for one thought it would come together but gradually it became clear that it just wasn't right.
£10 mil ? Well it seems very unlike ME to come up with that much but then we must also ask how much it would cost if we went down. Maybe business wise it make sense to put the money up and secure championship status. It not a huge sum but could get 3 or maybe 4 very good players at this level. We could then bring the youngsters through.

Guys, you do realise now, if Paul Lambert only spends £8million in January, we're all going to be disappointed, and wondering where the other £2m has gone :) lol.

Horseboy added 11:13 - Oct 28
10m will include wages, agent fees, signing on fees, it won't be headline transfer fee numbers, and signings in January cost significantly more than in the summer.

Sorry it didn't work out for your at ITFC - I had high hopes when you were appointed and but for a few things that didn't go our way you may have had a totally different start - good luck for the future - the muppets who berate you on here know nothing about football and have probably never played and certainly not coached !!

Onwards and upwards ! PL is a welcome sight , lots of experience & likey to shape us up all round !
Lets see what an acknowledged professional can now do .
It is a pity ME did not apparently want to provide funds for MM ,because with the benefit of hindsight it does look as if we were poised to really push on ,and the addition of one or two quality mature heads might just have seen us through, especially with a crop of promising youngsters .
What & how & when PL uses , brings back , tries out the budding talent will be interesting .As will finding out who he can attract to the cause ; seems likely his cache will be of higher standing than PH .
Let's hope gladness replaces sadness !
Come on you Blues !

Exactly horseboy, we think in terms of transfer fees but wages are a huge cost. Take Derby's signing of Waghorn, suppose he costs £7m after add ons and say £20k a week for three years. That would be the £10m just on one player. That's just for Waghorn, but we also lost Webster, McGoldrick, Garner and Celina's loan ended. Replacing that talent will cost a fortune to get 'off the shelf', especially in the January transfer window. I suspect we will need to look at players whose contracts expire in the summer so who will be cheaper.

As for Hurst, I think he will get a job in League One or Two due to his past record. He did have lots of bad luck (losing key players, not affording Tilt, those red cards, Walters' injury), but still was very disappointing and had to go.

Sourdough added 11:23 - Oct 28
Money for transfers? Pull the other one! He ain't got it. This madman is destroying the club.

Meanwhile a bunch of condemned men will scrape together a handful of points over the next dozen games, setting up early relegation.

Have put a deal to Paddy Power for early payment of my July relegation bet and they're thinking seriously about it. There's always a silver lining.
