Lambert: Imbalance in Squad Needs Rectifying
Thursday, 8th Nov 2018 18:02

Blues boss Paul Lambert believes the squad he has inherited at Town is unbalanced in a number of areas which will need to be addressed in the January transfer window.

Lambert has said the current squad needs some help with an experienced out and out number nine almost certain to be among his January targets.

“I think the squad is unbalanced, not just in one or two positions I think it’s unbalanced in a number of positions which I think needs rectifying,” he said.

“I think there are areas where they do need somebody to come in in January to give us a hand, I think that’s apparent. I think it needs to be a little bit more balanced and we have to wait and see.”

Lambert says he doesn’t yet know what sort of budget he’ll be working with: “Not at this moment. As I said before, I only just came in here just over a week ago and that’s furthest from my mind.

“It’s been about trying to get the best out of the guys that are here and give them a chance to go and prove that they can do it. But I know they need a bit of help and that’s what I’m trying to do.”

With no one likely to come in before January, what can be done to add to Town’s goal threat with the Blues the second-lowest scorers in the Championship with 12.

“I thought on Saturday we were excellent. I hear that argument, that we can’t score. We can score, we threatened a lot of times on Saturday and with a bit of luck we would have won the game,” he reflected.

“I was pleased with the way we played, pleased with the performance, with the team and all we needed is that little break but I won’t criticise for getting into positions but can’t get a goal.

“Where I do criticise is if they’re not in the positions and on Saturday they were excellent, I couldn’t have asked for any more.”

perhaps we should make that hideous sponsor in the middle of our shirt bigger, might distract the opposition defences till jan arrives

Remember Hurst said the same when he came in. Half a new squad later and it's still unbalanced.

But it's basically clear Hurst didn't have a clue?

He's not wrong. Encouraging start by Lambert IMO.

...... being better at defending set pieces would certainly help too.

He's spot on & I think the way he's said this is quite deliberate -
But I must say -
There are quite a few number 9s/strikers that are free agents
E.g. Agbonlahor or Bent off the top of my head
(on pay per play)
& Fitness dependent of course
Who act as a focal point till January
- then if it's not worked out/they've not been sharp enough
we can look afresh :)

Whoever it is cannot destabilize the squad too much
- so Lambert should pick someone he's worked with/has a good reputation

Bent is finished. We saw him at Burton. He was once a quick-silver play on the shoulder striker - he ain't the hold the ball up Murphy-type we need.
As for Abhorrent Agbonlahor - what do we want to do - to poison the team spirit?
We're stuffed until January and then it'll cost 5 million to get us out of the hole.
This will teach Evans for not having a proper Director of Football in place to help an out of his depth Paul Hurst.

I'm pleased it is not just me that believes the team is unbalanced. I've had that view for a long while now & blame MM for not rectifying it

A striker, a creator of chances for him in midfield and a central defender - all of a better quality than what we have - would do nicely!

We definitely need a big central defender to win headers in the area and put a stop to the soft goals we concede from corners and free kicks. Next would be a couple of midfielders with at least some ability as what we have are at this stage not good enough and are too easily shoved around.

Lots of poor players so we need some quality to balance them out.
