U18s at Walsham-le-Willows in Suffolk Premier Cup

Town’s U18s will take on Thurlow Nunn Premier Division Walsham-le-Willows at Summer Road in the second round of the Suffolk Premier Cup this evening (KO 7.45pm).

The young Blues, who are currently second in the Professional Development League Two South table, were drawn out of the hat first but as has been the case since the club re-entered the competition in 2015, they handed home advantage to the opposition.

As in previous years the squad will be augmented by one or two older players with Conor McKendry, Brett McGavin and Kai Brown set to be involved.

Last season the U18s, who are coached by Adem Atay and Kieron Dyer, exited the competition at the quarter-final stage when they were beaten 2-1 at Leiston in the final minute, having also having gone out at Victory Road the previous year when they lost 6-3 and in 2015 when they were defeated 6-2.

However, shouldn't this sort of competition be a walk in the park for our boys, considering the support and development they should have behind them? If we don't win it, shouldn't we be scouting the opposition that beats us for better talent?

On the surface it always feels like the competition should be a walk in the park, but in reality it highlights that there is a big difference between youth football and adult football, even lower league semi pro adult football. It will be a real challenge for the U18s to win this cup.

For example there are many ex ITFC players now in local lower league clubs, players that were regulars in ITFC U23s (or equivalent) that were highly fancied for the first team. These players have matured into men who are probably even more capable at the game.

It's literally a game of men vs boys.
