Gerken Returns as Lambert Makes Five Changes
Saturday, 8th Dec 2018 14:23

Town boss Paul Lambert has made five changes for this afternoon’s game against Stoke City at the bet365 Stadium including a switch in goal with Dean Gerken replacing the out-of-form Bartosz Bialkowski.

Lambert sticks with his regular back four but with Cole Skuse out with a knee injury Trevoh Chalobah returns in the deeper midfield role with Flynn Downes and Jon Nolan, making his first start since the change of manager, ahead of him.

Jack Lankester makes his second senior start, probably on the right of the front three, with Freddie Sears on the left and Jordan Roberts the central striker. Kayden Jackson and Grant Ward, starters at Forest last week miss out on places in the 18, while Teddy Bishop drops to the bench.

Stoke make two changes to the team which drew 2-2 at Reading last week with Saido Berahino and Ashley Williams replacing James McClean and Bruno Martins Indi.

Stoke City: Butland, Martina, Shawcross, Williams, Pieters, Woods, Allen, Clucas, Ince, Afobe, Berahino. Subs: Federici, McClean, Martins Indi, Diouf, Fletcher, Crouch, Sorensen.

Town: Gerken, Spence, Chambers (c), Pennington, Knudsen, Chalobah, Downes, Nolan, Lankester, Sears, Roberts. Subs: Bialkowski, Edwards, Harrison, Bishop, Rowe, Nsiala, Dozzell. Referee: Geoff Eltringham (County Durham).

Not convinced by this set up. Same back four no creativity in midfield, hope I'm wrong.

How does Spence get a game ???? I'd seriously play anyone else there !

Good bench shame about the first 11.

I agree Sixto, but Donacian not even on the bench?!

Time for Nolan to step up and produce, think he might be playing for his place in PL's squad.

So the back 4 mistake ridden senior players play again...really!!!
It is defensive mistakes, not marking, out of position and not stopping crosses that is costing us dearly, but we seem to persist..with what it seems to appease the senior pros.
Donacien and Nsiala must have really upset someone (probably the senior pros).
Still always hopeful...although may need to score 3 or 4 to get something
COYB !!!

From the above comments, I see the PL backlash has started.

Different Manager - same back four ? The must stick together slogan is wearing somewhat thin, and somewhat warranted.
Will be nothing short of a miracle to get a win with this line up - let's hope for the totally unexpected is the best one can do.

I'd love to see Rowe get some minutes this afternoon regardless of the score. And Dozzel too.

Would love to know where these brilliant defenders are who we could bring in...

Everyone seems to be able to see the abject failings of the back four - except the ‘so called experts' ?

Quite unbelievable really. I'm sure this back four wouldn't get a game anywhere else in the Championship - therein being why we are bottom.

Tortoise - whatever, whoever, could it be any worse ? - you can only ship goals, and lose, which we do now anyway.

Spence playing is a joke and reflects how poor we really are. Gerken decision is correct.

I cant believe he has left the Barcelona back four out of the team yet again. Just to play his favourites.

Firstly, good work P.L on bringing in Gerks, never thought I'd say that. Penn is decent but I agree with others that it beggars believe that the likes of Spence, Knudsen and Chambers are nailed on. These players have been crap forever, but still we persist with them. If by a miracle they can stay solid, I reckon we just might get something out of today's game.

Not Lamberts fault his hands are tied until January give him a chance

Goally needed to be changed as Bart has been awful lately. PH knackered the team up and Evans, I think we are down now for sure, so let's just experiment on whoever does well . Will be lucky to get anybody decent in January, I hope I am wrong , and by a miracle we stay up , fate will tell
