Skuse Targeting Quicker Than Expected Return
Monday, 10th Dec 2018 18:52

Blues midfielder Cole Skuse says he hopes to be back from his knee injury sooner than the currently expected two months. The 32-year-old tore cartilage in training last week and subsequently underwent minor surgery.

“It’s OK, it’s not ideal by any stretch picking up an innocuous little knock in training. I say a little knock, it was quite a tear to the cartilage in my knee so I’ll be out for a few weeks but I’m hoping to be back a lot quicker than is being anticipated,” he said.

“I don’t know whether that’s me being over-optimistic but hopefully that will come to fruition and I’ll be back a lot quicker than expected.”

He says he felt stronger than might have been thought likely even a matter of hours after the surgery.

“Almost to the surprise of my wife when I got back from the operation,” he added. “I had a small operation, a small tidy up, nothing overly serious, it was very straightforward.

“But I’ve walked in the front door after the operation, a few hours after, and she was almost expecting to lift me in the door, whereas I was very much on my feet the same day.

“The swelling’s come down almost straightaway and that was meant to be a lot longer. You break it down to blocks of stages they want you to tick off and I feel as if I’m ticking off a few more than I should be already.

“I’m healing quicker than they anticipated and hopefully that carries on in the same direction.

“So I’m feeling good, I’m feeling as if it’s going very well already and, like I say, I hope to be back quicker than expected.”

He admits picking up the injury is frustrating having impressed in the first few games of the Paul Lambert era.

“More than you probably know,” he continued. “I’ve had to sit on the sofa for four or five days straight just icing and keeping my leg elevated which for me is a very tough thing to do, especially when you’ve got three kids, it’s not easy.

“For someone that hates being injured at the best of times, it’s a real tough challenge just sitting still for a few days.”

Lambert has been effusive in his praise for Skuse’s performances and the midfielder is similarly complimentary towards his new boss.

“I’ve really, really enjoyed my football under him so far,” he added. “It’s been fantastic, not just for myself but you can see a real lift in everyone.

“Being injured at any time is never good but when I feel that I’m doing OK at the minute and having a decent spell, it’s tough to take.

“And with the team being bottom of the league, you want to be the one that’s out there trying to do your bit to amend things and being sat on the side for a few weeks is not the place you want to be.”

A bit marmite skusey but I have to say I've really liked him ever since he joined.... He's no fan favourite but is always reliable and a really good pro for the younger lads.

Get well soon Skusey. One of our most dedicated players always first in for training

I hold my hand up as I have been quite critical of Skuse over the years. However I also have to eat a large slice of humble pie as he has been a shining light since the arrival of Paul Lambert.
He is a very professional chap who the youngsters look up to so I think he will be missed. I wouldn't have said that when he played under a couple of previous managers who shall remain nameless but both originate from Yorkshire.

Very underestimated in my opinion.

I remember well the Bristol City Manager at the time of his arrival saying you'll only value his presence when he's not playing.

Will be sorely missed at a crucial time for the Club.

Just the kind of calming influence and cool head we need right now, this will be a big miss. While you're at the wrong end of the table if you don't have bad luck you have no luck at all. Injuries have plagued us for some time and in my opinion played a huge part in MM's style of play with creative players sidelined regularly and often for long periods of time.

Towns most underrated player. McCarthy made him one type of player ..... Lambert has reversed that to a more forward playing midfielder. Like Lambert, I wish Skuse was 5 years younger.

It's sad that he had to play under McCarthy for so long. Imagine if he'd had that time under Lambert. Even though we're bottom, he's been able to express himself a lot more and is producing the passes we all know he is capable of.

Regardless of our league position, I'm glad MM departed. Players like Sears, Lankester and Skuse have shown what could have been if the tactical approach has been more positive.

Send him to Peps magic doctor in Barcelona ?
He seems to have all sorts of potions and lotions that heal players quicker than expected. Failing that 3 weeks away from testing in the US works for Liverpool players

Great player. Similar to a Michael Carrick when it comes to his playing style (obviously not anywhere near as good). Underrated by many but also hasn't helped that he has had 2 or sometimes 3 central midfielders in his way trying to do the same job. Alongside a more attach minded central mid, he would be even better!

Towns most under rated player by far and it is so good to have some positive news on his injury.

Seems like he is absolutely desperate to get back as quickly as possible, perhaps he could have a word with his 2 midfield mates who have been out so long I have forgotten their names.

It is amazing that players that looked pretty jaded and poor und M Mc now look exciting and positive, Ben Knight has it right.
Imagine if Hurst had not let the team be gutted, by loans as much as sales, come January we may no longer need to imagine.
Skuse has become a true Blue and will be a legend in years to come.

A likeable club player with a talent that is not always appreciated for breaking play up and picking out a runner. Should be in the top three for contention of player of the year admittedly in a poor season but hey ho !

I agree, under MM and with 2 other DMs he didn't play his best. I remember him at Bristol city and thought he was Just what we needed but sadly his form dipped under MM. He looks like he's back to his best under PL so hope he'll be ok soon

Stand out worse performer for Hurst and one the reasons we are in this position.

Need more competition for our midfield.

Here's wishing Skuse a speedy recovery.

For me he's not the complete midfielder (like some of his predecessors here!), but Lambert has brought the best out of him. Like some, he does not need replacing if he goes on playing the way Lambert wants.
