Sears: I'm in My Best Town Form
Wednesday, 12th Dec 2018 15:33

Striker Freddie Sears believes he’s hit the best form of his Town career since Paul Lambert took over as boss at Portman Road.

Despite the bottom-of-the-table Blues still being without a win in their six games under Lambert, Sears netted four times in the first four of those matches having failed to register under former manager Paul Hurst.

“On a personal note, I’ve been delighted with my recent form,” Sears told the Colchester Gazette while visiting the children’s ward at Colchester General Hospital along with team-mates Jordan Spence and Trevoh Chalobah yesterday.

“I’m playing my best football since joining Ipswich. I’m back in the team, playing regularly and scoring goals.

“Confidence is massive in football and I feel I’m playing with that at the moment. At the start of the season I was having trouble with injury but now I feel fit.

“The only thing I’d say is that it doesn’t really mean a lot, because we’re not getting the results. Look at the Bristol City game. I scored twice but we still lost 3-2.

“It’s disappointing but, on a personal level, I’ve had a great month. Hopefully I can stick at it, keep it going and do my bit to help the team pick up some points because there’s still a long way to go.”

The 29-year-old, who still lives in the Colchester area having joined the Blues from the U's in January 2015, insists that Town can escape the drop, despite being eight points plus goal difference from safety going into Saturday’s home game against Wigan Athletic.

“No one has ever been relegated in December,” he added. “We know it’s going to be tough but have to keep believing.

“Performances have definitely picked up, which is positive, and if we keep doing the right things, we have to hope we’ll be rewarded.”

Regarding the hospital visit, during which the players distributed presents they had paid for, he added: “Hopefully it gave everyone a lift — the children and their parents. It’s something a bit different within their day.

“It’s something I really enjoy doing and it’s a good opportunity for us, as professional footballers, to give something back. We’re lucky to be in a position where we can try and help people and put smiles on faces.

“We got a great reaction from some of the children. They were pleased to see us and knew all about Ipswich.

“I’ve got two young sons and we spent some time in hospital when my first one was born. It can be really tough, for the children and their parents. Hopefully our visit gave them a little boost.”

Various members of the squad have also visited St Elizabeth Hospice, Ipswich Hospital, EACH (East Anglia's Children's Hospices), West Suffolk Hospital and St Nicholas Hospice in Bury St Edmunds over the last few days. TWTD joined Cole Skuse, Dean Gerken and Gwion Edwards at Ipswich Hospital on Monday.

Credit has to go Sears and Skuse, neither of which are favourites of mine, but they have hit form and we just need the rest to wake up and start producing.
Pleasing to hear so much positivity from the players and manager alike, with over half a season left it's to early too write us off just yet!

the time is coming, when we finally win I honestly believe we will shoot up the table. WE Will be top 12 this season I would put money on it. I for one am not ruling out the playoffs. lambert will turn this round and get us safe and better.

Well done Freddie, great positivity on and off the field. Truly believe we will avoid the drop, only needs a short run of results and performances of late suggest that's not unrealistic. There are at least 3 worse teams than us in the championship, just a little help in Jan and we'll be fine. The big rebuild can then begin as a championship club and NOT lge 1!

Its no good having a good strike force if the defence is rubbish

The article says they went to Colchester general but I'm sure that picture is a stock one from Willy Wonka's oompa lumpa ward.

Hope Sears picked up a championship golden ticket when he was there.

Big fan of Freddie but that said, he seems like a player who thrives on being top of the pecking order up front. I disagree with the majority who feel MM destroyed him. Truth is he was third or fourth choice for quite some time behind better centre forwards. He is now the best we have and enjoying his new found confidence, long may it continue!

Still do not believe we are seeing the best of Freddie
IMO he still needs to play up top with another striker, not wide in a 4-5-1 formation (no it is not 4-3-3 !!!).
I would like us to start playing 4-4-2 where defenders defend (and not caught out of position more often than not thinking they are wingers), Two CMs who are both capable of getting up and down the field (No holding Mid required as defenders are there doing their jobs). Wide midfielder playing wide and creating opportunities for themselves and the front 2 (not having to cover for out of position FBs) and the 2 strikers playing of each other, and on the shoulders of the defenders.
We never have enough people on the oppositions box, this is why we do not score many, and this is where we often find Sears...on the shoulder of the defender...our defender !!!.
He is a striker...so play him there.

Just give us a win.

Just a small glimmer of hope.

A chink of light in a dark tunnel.

feel he will be our main goal threat in league 1 next season, could hit 20 there.

@superblue67... there are 75 points available (25 games left). We'd need mid 70 points *minimum* to make play-offs. That's 65 points from a possible 75. Which means dropping 10 points so our record would need to be something like 22-1-3 for the rest of the season.

If nothing else, you're redefining 'rose-tinted'. :)

Always liked Freddie. This is the form he was showing before McCarthy started playing him out of position. Freddie, like all of use, must be wondering how he scored two of the best goals of his career against Bristol City and still ended up on the losing side.

It's MM's defence legacy that is the problem.

Give him a new deal - he's one of the only players who's earned one tbh.
