Blues Linked With Canary Marshall
Sunday, 16th Dec 2018 13:34

Town have been linked with a January move for Norwich City winger or right-back Ben Marshall.

According to The Sun, manager Paul Lambert is keen for the 27-year-old, who played for him at Blackburn and at Wolves, to join him at Portman Road on loan.

Marshall joined Norwich on a four-year deal in the summer from Wolves for an undisclosed fee but hasn’t featured since August.

The Salford-born former England U21 international is very much the experienced Championship campaigner Lambert is looking to add to his squad on loan during the transfer window.

Although seeing him primarily as a winger, Lambert was impressed with his performances at right-back during their time together at Ewood Park.

“He’s been excellent playing right-back,” Lambert said in February 2016. “Funnily enough I still see his talent being further forward up the pitch because he can beat people and he’s got a terrific knack of picking a pass or a shot.

“But he likes playing right-back and, to be fair to him, he’s doing ever so well in that role, and to get goals from that position, well there’s not too many you can say that about. Ben has been very good.”

Having been a youth player with Manchester United and Crewe Alexandra, Marshall was at Stoke where he failed to break into the first team but spent time on loan at Northampton, Cheltenham, Carlisle and Sheffield Wednesday before joining Leicester in 2012.

He moved on to Blackburn in 2013, then Wolves four years later when Lambert paid a fee of £1.2 million for him and was on loan at Millwall during the second half of last season.

Yesterday, owner Marcus Evans met with general manager of football operations Lee O’Neill and director of football Dave Bowman prior to the 1-0 victory over Wigan to further discuss the Blues’ January plans having held talks with Lambert at Playford Road earlier in the week.

The Sun must be true lol.

A good player at this level. Not as risky as some of the even more experienced options who will inevitably bring fitness risks.

I for one could not care one iota if he has any Norwich connections , if PL thinks he can help the cause we have to take his expertise on the subject and take them , PL has not really put a foot wrong so far.!!

See's Spence as a weak link?...

I mean that is a player I've wanted us to get for years. I'd take it.

Moved about a bit of late. He would be a bonus rather than waste, like a few sick notes we have fiddling the system.

Decent player from the bits I’ve seen!! Doesn’t matter to me where we sign him from as long as he’s a good player!! To be fair I’d rather play Santa Clause or Mickey Mouse at Right back than Spence!! The weakest part of our team by a mile! How he gets the privilege to pull on the Ipswich shirt every week is mind blowing.

Yes please. That’d be one side of the defence sorted.

I am really fed up with people who don't lie anybody who has had any link with Norwich. Grow up.

That's 'like' of course!

I don’t care about ex Norwich players signing for for town permanently - but ON LOAN!??? We can’t be supported to get out of relegation trouble by Norwich on an on going basis.

Marshall from Norwich?

It’s 2001 again, my time machine works!

Whatever or whoever it takes, staying up is all that matters!

I'd be happy with this.

One thing is clear; we need new recruits at left and right-back. Spence and Knudsen are nowhere near good enough and both liabilities. The root of many avoidable goals conceded can be traced back to these two.

This guy can strike a ball by the looks of YouTube. Looks a decent prospect. In PL we trust!

Quality player who can play different positions on the right, and PL knows him from Blackburn. A yes from me.

Fatboy added 17:18 - Dec 16
Has any player been loaned between the two clubs before?

Fen69 added 17:26 - Dec 16
David Wright, Danny Haynes among a few who escaped to us and found they were really a Blue

Can't see it happening but RB is definitely an area we need to strengthen, so far like PL around the place so if thats who he wants I hope we get him

Be amazed if Norwich sent us anyone on loan this season to be honest to help us avoid the drop!

Would we the other way around....!?

I think we have a perfectly good RB in Donacien but PL sees him as a CB the only decent defender so far has been Pennington he's quality and we should do everything to get him signed try Nsiala in Chambers place as he not a good footballer and puts us under pressure Every time he gets the ball or passes Kenlock looking to return so with those changes I reckon we would be more solid but to add Marshall as a RB would be good as he is a quality winger aswell and scores outside the box I've liked him ever since I saw him play for Leicester many years ago (think is the same player)

Here we go again !!. A manager bringing in old mates syndrome. I would much rather us bring in young european footballers who have far more flair, skill, talent and work ethic. It is about time Evans started making the right moves. Maybe we should be recruiting good european footballers instead of journeymen just looking for a contract to ride on. . When will we learn ?

So you're all alright with us signing a winger as a right back when it's Lambert making the call, but when Mick did this on a regular basis it was a case of square pegs in round holes?
I dunno, I'm not saying things haven't improved under Lambert since the disaster that was Hurst, however, I'm yet to be impressed. For me he was not the right appointment for a lot of reasons and I genuinely hope he proves me wrong and he could well do if they can build on Saturday's result. But come on, if this highly dubious story (based on where it came from) turns out to be true, isn't it a little hypocritical of us to be lauding it as a good signing?
Just as another clarification - I might not be keen on Lambert as an appointment (mainly because his recent record really isn't that great as well as the obvious scum connection), I do think his positivity has been a nice change of atmosphere. I just don't know, I am vehind the boys and the reinvention of Freddie has been what I have been pining for for the last couple of seasons, he's still making weird decisions. Bart is our best keeper, regardless of mistakes this season (which have been caused by a lack of confidence instilled by Hurst and Doig), all he needs is a serious run of games to regain the form we know he's capable of. Not much between the two keepers as far as shot-stopping goes, but Gerken's distribution is and always will be woeful. The man is incapable of releasing the ball quickly or accurately and I honestly think that makes a massive difference to our ability to effectively control possession and the pace of the game.

Went a bit off on a tangent there but hey, rant over, and here's to me hopefully being wrong about Lambert. COYB, always behind you, never blindly following.
