Town Linked With Move For Free Agent Dawkins
Sunday, 23rd Dec 2018 10:31

Town reportedly could make a move for free agent winger Simon Dawkins, who left MLS side the San Jose Earthquakes in February.

According to The Sun, Blues boss Paul Lambert could take the 31-year-old on a free transfer as he looks to augment his squad.

Dawkins came through the academy at Tottenham and spent spells on loan with Leyton Orient, the Earthquakes, Aston Villa and Derby while a player at White Hart Lane.

In January 2014 the Edgeware-born left-sided wideman was sold to Derby for £500,000 without having broken into the Spurs first team.

Two years later, the 19-times-capped Jamaica international moved back to the Earthquakes in January 2016 but left this February.

Dawkins subsequently came close to joining Minnesota United and then spent time on trial with League One sides Charlton and Luton in the summer but wasn’t offered terms by either club.

Another winger with Championship experience may well be on Blues manager Lambert's wish list as he looks to add to his squad ahead of the second half of the season.

Why haven't we signed him already if he's been a free agent since Feb?

Very strange and random one this - I think the sun pulled it out of a hat to be honest

Never heard of him.

If he's got lots of Championship experience it's passed me by.

Really strange one. Regular for Steve Mclaren at Derby in promotion chasing team 2-3 years back. Regular in MLS and then a transfer fell through and he hasnt played for a year...except for pre-season with Charlton. Luton manager said he was good enough to join them following trial but needed to spend money in other areas. Pedegree is there but question marks over why still available. Would need a month to be match fit as well. I wouldnt be unhappy with it as a player with something to prove, cheap and if goes well keep. This would be a supplementary player though and not likely to pull up trees.

If you havent heard of him it doesnt make it Random. He's a proven Champ player in a position we need who is available. Its basically the opposite of Random. He fits the profile. Having said that he's the cheapest option due to being free and without a club a while which raises question marks. A strange one yes but not that Random. Strange in sense of given his pedegree there is no way he should be unattached for so long for no reason.

Is there a dearth of news on the personnel front ?
Like others I have great faith in PL & co , but I really do not think he'll be in to players needing to actually get fit before being able to contribute .
He will be looking for ‘old ‘ heads and some physicality to bolster a number of situations ,and help to spread the tremendous burden upon the shoulders of our very few ‘ Championship ‘ men .
It'd be a real downer if ME proves to have gone back on his word : but PL is full of commonsense & practicality ; I think his current words of ‘amazement' re Salaries are delivered to put a bit of a lid on perhaps unrealistic expectations we might indulge ( would we ?) .

I can't see this one happening, if we took him he won't improve the team straight away. We would probably have to show others the door first to accommodate him. I don't think we need anymore wide players, we do however need a “leader” in midfield with experience. Priority though is a good right back.

We need a decent striker in the mould of Murphy/Walters not another wide player!

Any chance of a striker and some fullbacks please? Calling Josh Emmanuel back would be a start.

Evans trying to do it on the cheap again. Ipswich Town Football Club deserves much better than this

So many expert Championship managers on here today. They've all managed at the highest level - in their bedrooms on the computer. Let's see who PL chooses before we moan about about a player's suitability.

I'd like to see Josh back, must be better than Spence? PL will be having him watched and whether he is called back or not will depend on what he is told/seen. If he isn't called back, I will accept that he isn't as good as I thought.

No thanks. He is in Evans budget range though.

If Lambert thinks he can add quality to the starting X1, then who am I to say he is wrong. I can't say I remember seeing him play, but why not. We need something.

They're not moaning about player suitability @positivelyportman, I think what people are showing CONCERN for is if this blokes not good enough for the mighty Charlton or Luton then what good is he to us given our present predicament.
IF there is any truth in this( bearing in mind it's come from the sun) it sounds like a Paul hurst signing.
Bottom line is we need better players than this if we are to stay in this league this season, surely you can understand that

I live in San Jose and have watched the Earthquakes semi-regularly over the years. You can trust me this would be a big 'NO !!!

Oh and i've never seen him play wide, he played every game in central midfield.

Calm down. Many of these links don't come to fruition. I don't think we will honestly be signing a player for free who's been rejected by Charlton and Luton! Reality check needed by fans .

Found this highlights video on YouTube - some decent movement and good finishing, but the video was posted in 2016, and I would be concerned that he couldn't make the immediate impact that we need at the moment. Since he is being touted as a left sided midfielder this would also require a change of system/personnel by PL as Freddie Sears has been occupying that area of the pitch, and to good effect. I'm not against the idea of taking a look at him, but think it could be a bit of a gamble.

Roberts has earned his worth as a makeshift striker, while a fit again Harrison is a very good front player. Should we be interested in Dawkins when Roberts, always hard working, could play in his natural wide position, while having the energy for defensive duties.
With the upbeat Lambert as Manager, the team, squad and supporters are becoming as one, now that is a real team.
