Town Confirm Elder Loan Signing
Wednesday, 2nd Jan 2019 11:14

Town have completed the signing of Leicester City left-back Callum Elder on loan for the rest of the season.

As TWTD reported over the weekend, the 23-year-old former Australian U20 international, who is out of contract in the summer, has been training with the squad for the last week and joined them on the trip to Middlesbrough at the weekend.

“I’m delighted we have been able to get Callum in early. He gives us more competition on the left side,” boss Paul Lambert told the club site.

“He is a very good player. He’s been training with top players at Leicester and he has handled that well.

“He’s got a really good left foot and he wanted to be here and that’s vital for me. I need players who want to come here and play for this club.”

Lambert's first Blues signing, who comes in as Jonas Knudsen seems set to move on during January, could make his Blues debut in the FA Cup third round tie at Accrington Stanley on Saturday. He will wear the Town number 25 shirt.

Elder, who joined the Foxes from Manly United based in his hometown of Sydney aged 16, is yet to make a senior appearance for Leicester but has spent time on loan at Mansfield, Peterborough, Brentford, Barnsley and Wigan.

He was with the Latics for the whole of the 2017/18 campaign as they carried off the League One title, making 30 starts and three sub appearances in all competitions, scoring once.

Elder’s only Championship experience came in spells with Brentford and Barnsley the previous season, a total of 11 starts for the two clubs.

When joining the Tykes, Elder, who qualifies for England and Scotland as well as Australia, described himself as “an athletic full-back. I like getting up and down the left-hand-side”.

Welcome Callum see if you can help steady this sinking ship and give us all something to be positive about. Now to get a new right back and maybe we might get a few good results to make it a little bit easier. Good luck welcome to Ipswich

Smart signing, Knudsen seems to be off.

His contract up with Leicester at the end of the season, will be available on a free. Him and Kenloxk, 2 young left backs fighting for a place, it's the kind of rebuild we need.

Also played over 25 games in the title winning League 1 team for Wigan last year, good signing all round.

Also good comments in Leicester newspaper "The pacy forward was part of City's under-21s group that won the Hong Kong Soccer Sevens tournament in 2017, winning player of the tournament after netting eight goals"

He looks determined! and that's one aspect that's needed. Fresh blood in with a rallying calls mustering the troops, and organisation of defence. If he plays as well as he talks and we get 2-3 more in incl at least one striker, we could be OK. COYB!

I think Kenlock has done very well and I know we need some cover in case he gets injured. However we know who will get the regular 1st team spot because he is from a Premier League side. We never give our younger players a good run and start to build a team of our own, we have a good academy with good young players. Bobby Robson built his team around youngsters and it served him loyally and well for years.
Don't get me wrong I'm sure Elder is a good player but I would like to see our lads get priority.

So basically a league 1 standard player rather than the hardened championship player needed

A full back who scores goals! Just five more players to bring in and you never know the fairy god mother might bring us some magic to haul us off the bottom and save our season.

Think PL is looking longer term with a view to him joining us on a permanent move in the summer. Bed him in ready for next season and get us out of league 1 he did it with Wigan. So get what you can for Jonas must be worth a fortune by how his been reacting lately, and be careful as he leaves in case he hits his ears on the door frame. I can see PL building his squad next few weeks not to stay in this league but to get straight back up again.

Welcome Callum and great credit to you for joining when the club is struggling at the bottom of the table. This could be your chance to add some gold stars to your CV and begin the path to legendary status-no pressure from me!!

Welcome Callum , hopefully this will strengthen one side now definitely need a right back asap as Spence costs us every game .
Also think we should be trying to Fraser Forster to the club rapidly as both keepers look shot to pieces at present and have no presence which makes whole back four even more nervous

He's much more a League One rebuild player than a Championship fight to stay up player, but after yesterday's result that is exactly what we need. If we could sign him permanently in the summer he could be a great addition for our 2019/20 League One title winning team. Welcome, Callum.

@brendenward35

The "pacy forward" comments in the article were about Josh Eppiah, not Callum Elder! He did score one goal for Wigan last season though.

It's good that there'll be competition for the left-back spot once Knudsen moves on. Something that is sadly lacking in the rest of the back line.

Need Jonas to move on now, because if he doesn't wages become an issue.

So does that mean JK sold for peanuts and MK back to back up at left back?

I think we could bring in half the Liverpool squad and struggle to stay up at this point.

A major miracle is now needed - we basically have to win about 10 of our last 20 - sadly that will not happen.

Thanks Paul Hurst for decimating a decent squad last summer and a Huge thanks to Marcus Evans for 10 years of total sh1te.

👏🏻🤮💩

Welcome Callum - despite our current difficulties, see beyond that and recognise that you're joining a fantastic club, now with an excellent manager. All we can ask is that you give the manager and team mates max effort; in turn you'll earn us, those who are the Club's heart and soul, respect and support during your time here. Good luck, and remember: COYB!

Hopefully good cover for Kenlock. Right back more of a priority, we need to change Spence even though I think Donacien and Emmanuel can do the job
