Town Closing in On Hull Striker Keane
Wednesday, 2nd Jan 2019 14:35

Town are reportedly closing in on the signing of Hull City striker Will Keane.

According to HITC Sport, the club is in talks with the Tigers regarding Keane and TWTD understands there is substance to the report.

The 25-year-old is on the fringes at the KCOM Stadium and manager Nigel Adkins is said to be willing to allow him to depart.

Stockport-born Keane, who is out of contract at the end of the season, came through the ranks at Manchester United where he made two sub appearances in the Premier League and spent spells out on loan at Wigan, QPR, Sheffield Wednesday and Preston.

In August 2016, Hull paid the Red Devils a reported £1.02 million for 6ft 2in tall Keane, who has been capped by England at U16, U17, U19, U20 and U21 levels.

A serious knee ligament injury - the second of his career, he previously missed the whole of the 2012/13 campaign - saw him sidelined for more than a year of football with the Tigers and he has made only 11 starts and 15 sub appearances, scoring once, since making his move to East Yorkshire.

Overall, Keane, whose twin brother is England international centre-half Michael, has netted only six senior goals in 45 starts and 33 games from the bench.

This season he has made one Championship start - the 2-0 win at Leeds last Saturday - and seven sub appearances, in addition to two games in the EFL Cup, without finding the net.

Manager Paul Lambert is on the lookout for two strikers during the January transfer window with a big number nine a priority as he looks to turn Town’s season around in the second half of the campaign.

Not the most exciting signing, is he what we need to sort our lack of goal threat out? Maybe (hopefully) I am wrong but could just be looking towards league 1 and want to sign him at the end of the loan

Can't be any worse than what we're got.

Can he be a target, hold the ball up?

"The 25-year-old is on the fringes at the KCOM Stadium" enough said! But then again a change of club might help, remember Waghorn? Pity we could not get him back, or Graner or Murphy (MOTM yesterday!)

Ignore the stats. Not actually a bad player and had a horrific injury. We need numbers in, simple at that! Don't think we're in a position to decline players at the moment!

Transfers aside, Rotherham is a MUST WIN!! I might be deluded, but I still believe we're staying up!

FML his “highlight” real actually includes him just having some shots!
Hope he can find some form for us, we need it...

dubblue- I think I'll take PL's opinion over ours. As you say remember Waghorn......

For us to move this quickly for him suggests he was on the list that Lambert gave Evans so he must see something in him.

That being said it's hardly an exciting signing but we certainly are in no position to be picky.

Simply not good enough but who else would want to join a sinking ship like us?

No this won't add to our goal tally this season but could be decent signing for league 1. Anyone who thinks our January signings are designed for a survival push needs their head testing.

If Permanent its not a terrible signing albeit some risk given his lack of goals. He was absokutely prolific for Utd youth teams and then reserves he scored a lot. Picked up lots of accolades. E.g. youth player of yeaf for Utd and they obviously rated him highly keeping him until he was 23. Mike Phelan took him to Hull having worked with him a lot. Very high pedegree but massively unlucky with injuries which has to be a concern given some of our others at the moment. Technically excellent but question mark over ability to get back in the goals. Inwoukd rather someone with his ability over say Roberts. Someone like this may work well with Jackson and Sears pace off him.

Could have been worse. His almost namesake Roy Keane started the real rot and was in my opinion the worst manager ever ..... even more so than Hurst. Nothing to do with this story but it felt good typing it !

You can't compare this guy to Waghorn. Waghorn has proven pedigree in the Premier League and was a much stronger player. Having said that, I like the look of his highlights, can head, hold the ball up, can score, point to prove, championship experience, good age, could be a canny signing.

Are some people that delusional to think that some top free scoring striker is going to join us in this situation at this moment in time?! Of course we're going to sign these types of players what is the matter with you? We can only hope PL can turn them and the whole squad around.

Sounds like more of the same.............not sure what he will add to the squad but I hope to be proved wrong. Given our current situation, I would rather look long time and blood in some of our youngsters ratherthan make knee-jerk / panic signings of players with questionable quality....it's not quantity that we want but players that will genuinely make a difference.
If we follow our recent transfer policy we will probably sell Lankester to fund this :(

Planning for league 1 and that's all. Quality players aren't tripping over themselves rushing to sign for a relegated team.

Unfortunately it's goalscorers we need, and they're not readily available. I was impressed with Harrison yesterday, and Jackson took his goal well... so wot actually too bad off with the strikers we've got if we're not basing it on number of goals scored or chances converted... but as we all know, that doesn't win games. Would Keane suddenly become a goal machine?

ME accepting relegation then

Pathetic signing for a pathetic football club.

I have to admit to having a sinking feeling over all this and am beginning to think that the best thing for the club would be the almost inevitable relegation. If I was Lambert now I would match blood all my good young players from the Under23's and give them game time between now and the end of the season and use them as the nucleus of next seasons team. As my grandfather used to say 'Neither a borrower nor a lender be' it was so exciting to see Lankaster, Downes and Bishop performing yesterday, that's how to build a team, loaning players has got us precisely nowhere in the last 20 years. Lets use this as an opportunity and be positive. Good enough is old enough for our youngsters, have faith in them.
Plus it won't cost Evans much lol
