Lambert: I Can Still Keep Town Up With Hard Work and Financial Support
Monday, 7th Jan 2019 10:41

Boss Paul Lambert insists he can still keep the Blues in the Championship with hard work and “financial support over the next few weeks” of the transfer window, despite believing he has never had to “rebuild a club or turn things around as much” as he does at Town.

The Blues' season of woe hit another low at Accrington Stanley on Saturday when they were beaten 1-0 by the League One club to exit the FA Cup at the first hurdle for the ninth successive season.

Town, bottom of the table, 10 points plus goal difference from safety, face a crucial game against fourth-bottom Rotherham United at Portman Road on Saturday at which the club are staging a ticket promotion.

“I still believe I can keep this club in the Championship,” Lambert said. “It’s going to take a lot of hard work and I need financial support over the next few weeks of the window, but it can be done.

“I came into this job with my eyes open. I knew it was going to be difficult, but it’s only when you go into the fabric of the club that you truly understand what you are dealing with.

“What has gone on here in the past is not acceptable. There has got to be a lot of changes going forwards.

“First things first, we need more bodies in as fast as possible. I have never had to rebuild a club or turn things around as much as I do here. But I know it can be done.”

The Blues have already added Hull City striker Will Keane and Leicester City left-back Callum Elder to their squad during the window.

On Saturday, Lambert said he hoped to add “a couple” of further signings early this week with Cardiff City winger Anthony Pilkington and Huddersfield forward Collin Quaner among those understood to be in talks.

PL is by far the most positive manager this club has had for decades. He has done it as a player and therefore gets respect. Although he's got a dreadful squad of players it is clearly evident that he is trying to develop the team to play a forward thinking game. I truly believe that with financial support PL could bring the fans back in droves and elevate the club to another level. I fear that if ME doesn't share his passion and fails to provide financial backing then PL could walk. He's so passionate about the club and winning football matches. I looked his post match interview, honest and frank. He says what others are afraid to say. By the way Alex Mathie is also on the same level and he's hurting watching these players. COYB

I honestly have so much respect for Paul Lambert, really telling evans how it is. Evans you need to listen and back lambert at all costs, because if we go down (looks very likely) will cost you a hell of alot more. I dont want to be negative, but i believe we will be relegated. I just hope we keep hold of lambert, but if evans dosent give lambert and the lads a fighting chance by backing them? well i wouldnt be suprised if lambert jumped ship also! and i would not blame him. Marcus, LISTEN.

If Pilkington arrives this week, that would be a strong signal of intent. A winger with Premier League experience and a goal ratio better than 1 in 5. If we can attract a few more like him (and beat Rotherham) then the great escape might just be on.

Lambert isn't going to say "Forget it! We're doomed!" is he, but I bet like most of us now, he believes it. He wants some player sin now with a view to rebuilding next season.

Put yourself in Evans shoes for a minute, would you, in all honestly, splash out a load of cash on players that the club could sustain if it went down? Income next season will be woeful and saddling yourself with a large wage bill could see this club go back into administration!

Then there is the FFP (anyone remember it?) not been talked a lot about lately. How much is Evans allowed to give Lambert for his 'war chest'? Over do it and we could be facing a 12-15 point reduction that is hanging over Birmingham at the moment.

So lets be realistic here, anyone we get in will be on loan or a short term contract until the end of the season. The biggest earners will then have to take a pay cut of be off. Our promising youngsters will be lured away by top flight football and big bucks.

If we are in as bad a state as PL makes out this will not be an overnight fix but another of Evans' five year plans.

Lambert does need to be backed financially to have any chance of staying up
Forster in goal , Carter Vickers , Ledley , Leadbitter ,Pilkington would make one hell of difference , pay them their wages Evans
Clearly Hurst made massive errors spending over the top on players but the squad he was left with after the selling of Webster , Garner , Waghorn and releasing Dids not his decision was very poor , as Lambert is now finding out also and very limited footballing ability due to years of playing the MM way . Spence , Knudsen , Chambers , Ward all poor .
And MM not having money to spend he spent over a million on Huws and Adeymi who havn't played for us !!.

Sensing a bit of contradiction here. One game not that long after Lambert took over he clearly said the first half performance was as good as anything he'd seen as a manager anywhere. We've had several decent first half performances in fact. But sadly things tend to fold 2nd half!
I'm sick of so many of the run of the mill first teamers, they've used up their 9 cat lives and some! I've said it before and I'll say it again, the U23s are a far better bet than the first team. Sack the 1st team and play the U23s for the rest of the season, I promise you they won't do any worse!

Just love his optimism. Come on Marcus lets see your support.

If a manager can get a really good first half why can't they put in a 2nd shift for the next 45 mins without committing suicide? If they can look the far better team for the first half why not maintain the form or at least near to it 2nd half? We've had several games where we should of been out of sight!

Unless we find that goal scorer we can be here ever
MM did well to get MW and JG
I remember old DJ Campbell doing some quick work in a few months !

It is a tough one as am sure ME thinks we are already down and a few more losses will be good to off set against his other businesses

Midastouch you are absolutely right about FFP , we don't wish to be punished for it but needs must at the moment. I am sure ME can put more in the coffers without wildly stretching the FFP.
At least I hope so!

Even if the funds were made available, who will want to come here that can improve this squad? The January window can be difficult at the best of times; more so when trying to dig the club out of a hole.

Lambert could be talking-up an early exit - "back me or I walk" kind of thing. I really hope not. I want him here to rebuild.

Whoever we buy should be with an eye on League One. No team has survived on such a low points tally at this stage. Possible but highly unlikely.

Yes midastouch, a contradiction.

I think PL wanted to put his arms around the players and boost their confidence by telling them how good they were and how well they are playing.

Since the players haven't repaid him in the slightest. He has now realised what a bunch of useless inept players he has at his disposal and his frustrations have led to him telling it as it is!

Must say, some excellent posts here today. Found myself agreeing with the vast majority. I only wish we were discussing the progress of the team instead of it's demise.

I agree but my view on your last point is; actually we are making progress, simply having an honest appraisal of the situation from the manager is the first step in making any sensible changes.
We need to see where that gets us, MEs response will say a lot.

There is even less logic in Evans spending in this window than in previous ones. And even less chance of players wanting to come or being available at what he will see as "the right price."

The only way change happens is if Ipswich fans start to make their discontent with the owner heard. Until his ownership of ITFC starts to impact on the reputation of the wider Marcus Evans Group, nothing will change.

And for those of you saying that without Evans the club has no future: rubbish. There will be buyers if the asking price is realistic and based on what the club is worth today, not how much Evans has wasted on making bad decision after bad decision over 10 years. Plenty of other clubs have found new owners in the past few years....many of whom had far less upside than Ipswich.

Perhaps the North Stand could make a start on Saturday?

Evans is the money but Clegg , Milne etc have been the architects of the demise - They were supposed to 'run' the club work with managers and as we know they are so out of their depth
Clegg was purely an Olympics appt to help ME with his ticket angles and paint some turnstiles
As for Milne - well I really have not a clue about his credentials but I couldnt imagine him and Mick or PL in a meeting . Clegg and Keane !! Ha that would be hilarious
We have been run by incompetents for too long for know passion , understanding or even empathy with the town , the club and us - the supporters

Why are you saying Sears should go, he is playing well at the moment and always been a quality player when played in the right position.

Brave statement by ‘positive Paul' and maybe a bit late in the day to call it, but whatever happens this season my gut is we stick with him and back him. As for the player, not so, any new additions should be welcomed cause I don't see any reason why they ain't going to be better than what we currently have.

Well said PL.
Come on Evans, give him the tools to do the job that you've employed him to do.
If not, what are you up to?

Tony 88 - I love Sears for his workrate but as a striker his record in last 2 years is poor
He has had some gilt edge chances in last few games and not converted

Tough times lead to tough decisions

I think we need him in and around the squad but at the moment he is not helping our cause

The problem , as we know , is even more at the back

Over the past few games we have missed Skuse

Never thought I would say that but his injury has resulted in us shipping alot more goals

Bart - not happy since goalie coach went

Poor old Paul Hurst. So many stupid decisions made before he even walked into the building.
Caving in to the demands of 1st team players to move further north etc before last season end.
And moves rubber stamped by MM long before PH arrived

dont think waghorn and garner are doing much this season tbh, kayden has actually scored 1 more than waggy and same as garner :) i am more gutted mick let jack marriott go what a finisher that boy is unlike freddie who is just not a natural goalscorer unfortunately, and the fact the real mcgoldrick has decided to turn up and play this season is another downer

ME's actions this transfer window are going to be very telling about how he really feels about the club. We have a manager who has said how it is. If Evans does not support him financially, Paul will walk and any chance of us getting out of League 1 will evaporate. We'll be a League 1 team until Evans leaves.

No more talk ME, it's do or die time. Enough talk. Enough with the five step plan BS. Out up or shut up. Stop dangling the proverbial carrot in front of us. We're sick of it. We have a good manager, support him. If you fail Lambert, you've failed Ipswich and proven you really don't give a crap.

The worry is Lambert gets what he wants and stays! 0.55pts per game so far!!And people on this forum are raving about him like he's some sort of Messiah.I nearly put,God give me strength, but managed to stop myself.
