Town Confirm Collins Signing
Friday, 11th Jan 2019 14:17

Town have confirmed the signing of veteran Welsh international defender James Collins on a short-term deal through to the end of the season.

Collins, 35, goes straight into the squad for tomorrow’s key clash with relegation rivals Rotherham at Portman Road along with other recent captures Will Keane, Callum Elder, Collin Quaner and Simon Dawkins.

Newport-born Collins began his career at Cardiff City, making 67 league appearances before moving on to West Ham, Aston Villa and then back to the Hammers, where he spent six seasons until his release last summer.

In September, TWTD revealed that free agent Collins, who was released by the Hammers last summer, was training with the Town squad.

The 6ft 2in tall centre-half was subsequently offered a contract by former boss Paul Hurst but after he suffered a hamstring injury the proposed move broke down and he rejoined Villa on trial.

The former Wales international, who has won 51 full caps and has scored three international goals, then signed a short-term deal with Villa but after picking up a calf injury ripped up his contract.

Town boss Paul Lambert, who hinted yesterday that Collins would start against the Millers, said: “James has a great presence about him and that can be huge for us. He has played at the highest level and his experience will be vital. We’re delighted to have him here.”

Collins, who has spent the bulk of his career in the Premier League, impressed boss Lambert in training this week and has been allocated squad number 39.

As PJ is looking for a bigger and stronger team ... I think we MIGHT see Chambo back out at Right Full Back - unless we get another RB in to replace Spence. I do not think Chambo is worse at RB than Spence so I think this might be what we see on Saturday?

GOOD to have a taller CB as well as a taller CF - so we should do better at set pieces at BOTH ends of the field

Welcome James...if fit will certainly add more resistance to our wobbly defence, just need a good right back now.

“Welcome James, we've been expecting you”. Great news. Lets start tomorrow with James Collins, Will Keane, Callum Elder, Collin Quaner and Simon Dawkins all from kick off. They need to bond. Give it a go. Bring it on. James Collins is exactly what we need. Yet to see the others but let's get behind em. Oo err. Coyb.

After he has rescued us I believe he could be a future Town manager. Terrific signing and up there with Mowbray and DeVos. Watch this space.

Brilliant - He could be our new 'Mogga' - pray he stays fit right until end of the season.

Chambers won't be dropped - no chance we need to captain & he will play alongside Collins with Pennington going out to the right and lily elder at left back.. Could even see Bart Man return??

A new look back 5... Emyr and Skuse back in mid with Chalobah?

Freddie on the left up front, Will Keane on the Right and big Col battering their defence through the middle...

Buzzing...

So happy with this signing. Even if he doesn't play, (which he will) his presents around the club will boast moral no end. All the younger players (and some of the older ones) will benefit from his experience and knowhow. Well done all involved, exactly what was needed.

Saw him play at West Ham a number of times. The man has a PRESENCE on the park. He has STRENGTH. He can READ A GAME. As I might have observed before in these columns, he was known as 'The Ginger Pele' by the West Ham faithful. Keep him fit and he'll do a good job!
