Town Among Clubs to Have Been Eyeing Jenkinson
Friday, 25th Jan 2019 09:31

Town are reported to have been among a number of clubs to have shown interest in Arsenal right-back Carl Jenkinson, who is set to stay with the Gunners.

According to the Daily Mirror, the Blues, West Brom and Burnley were all keen on the 26-year-old, however, manager Unai Emery has told the once-capped England international that he is in his first-team plans.

Emery is said to have been impressed by Jenkinson in training and by his approach to the game.

Arsenal recently lost Hector Bellerin to a cruciate knee ligament injury and although Emery has other options at right-back, including ex-Blues loanee Ainsley Maitland-Niles, Jenkinson is said to be in in his thoughts despite having last featured in the Premier League in November 2016.

He spent last season on loan at Birmingham but has appeared for the Gunners in five cup matches during this campaign.

Jenkinson, who started his career with Charlton’s youth set-up and has also spent time on loan at West Ham, was rumoured to be a Blues target early in the transfer window with manager Paul Lambert having said that a right-back was an area of the squad he was looking to strengthen.

Since then he has moved Matthew Pennington to right-back, while Josh Emmanuel has returned from his loan spell at Shrewsbury with Lambert having no plans to send the youth product back out for the second half of the season.

Yesterday, the Blues boss played down the chances of more players joining on loan as Town already have the five permitted in a matchday squad, however, he didn’t entirely rule out further additions before the end of the month.

Be nice to think we did have a renewed ambition to even try for a player like this

If he's “ set to stay at Arsenal” why bother?

What a pointless article. Must be a quiet news day!
I'll be honest I don't think we'll sign anyone else before the end of window.
Been some decent business don't by Lambert and Evans this month.
Just a shame that it's likely gonna be too little too late.

The only thing to relate to this is - we still need a right back!

@Owaing1992: It's not a pointless article, it's telling us that the club was looking to address the problem area of right back & had targeted a high profile player who would be on a serious wage. It gives context to why PL said that Emmanuel is unlikely to go on loan again also. Presumably, & yes I'm guessing here, Jenkinson was looked at before Collins signed, Janoi went on loan & Josh came back all of which would effect the priority in signing a right back.
We were all crying out for action to be taken following a number of costly performances from Spence, is it not somewhat comforting to read that a Premier League right back was been looked at? Pennington is a good option there now, as long as Collins stays fit.

It's not irrelevant at all . As Len says it's a news story telling us about a player we were allegedly interested in.
Ok it doesn't look like it's happening but I for one m interested.

Emery has just confirmed Jenkinson is in his first team plans so he won't be leaving Arsenal.

If Carl Jenkinson, or indeed any right back of that calibre, ends up playing for Ipswich at any age younger than 32, I'll sit and watch our next Boxing Day game in just my underpants.
