Bishop Nets Hat-Trick as U23s Thrash Millwall
Monday, 28th Jan 2019 15:59

Teddy Bishop netted a hat-trick as Town’s U23s thrashed Millwall 5-0 at Playford Road to stretch their lead at the top of the Professional Development League Two South table to 10 points. Tristan Nydam (pen) and Aaron Drinan netted the other two goals while keeper Toby Egan saved a Millwall spot-kick on his U23s debut.

Nydam, back after his loan spell with St Johnstone, got the ball rolling in the 26th minute when he converted a penalty having been fouled.

Three minutes later, Bishop doubled the lead when he seized on a clearance slammed against a Millwall player and found the net.

Simon Dawkins went close before the break, then Bishop shortly after the restart but in the 53rd minute the Lions were handed a chance to pull a goal back when Barry Cotter fouled Lewis White in the box.

The Millwall midfielder took the kick himself but Blues keeper Egan, who travelled with the first-team squad to Aston Villa at the weekend, superbly saved.

Egan, an academy second-year scholar who has been at the club since he was 14, subsequently made a double-stop to maintain the youngsters’ two-goal advantage, then on 67 Bishop added his second of the afternoon and Town’s third, twisted and turned his way from his man on the left before shooting home from a very tight angle.

Seven minutes later, Drinan made it 4-0, the Irishman taking the ball off a hesitant Millwall defender on the Blues' left before rounding the keeper and finding the net.

Bishop completed his hat-trick and the afternoon’s scoring in the 84th minute when he found the top corner with a left-footed strike from just inside the box.

Town’s U23s, who are coached by Gerard Nash and Chris Hogg, have now won their last four and are undefeated in five stretching back to a 2-0 loss at Millwall in November.

U23s: Egan, Emmanuel, Cotter (Webber 62), Spence, Clements, Nydam (McGavin 75), Bishop, Dozzell, Dawkins, K Brown, Drinan. Subs: Ware, Dobra, El Mizouni.

Academy keeper, in his second year as a scholar, joined as a 14-year-old.

I know the u23 games are nothing like 1st team but Bishop needs to be starting for us. I presume he is fit now and frankly he can do stuff that no one else on our books can.

Bish will go to one of the high flying championship sides. We don't seem to be able to recognise talent when it stares us in the face.

So, TWO young goalkeepers, Wright and Egan, showing flair. Got to be good news. How did Emmanuel do?

The U23s showing the first team the way to go with 39 points from 19 games and over 50 goals! Meanwhile the first team sit on under 23 points with just 18 points from 29 games and only 23 goals scored with 50 conceded! Talk about a contrast in fortunes! I have been losing the faith with Bishop (as it seems like so long since he made his name during our play off season) but on this showing maybe he's worth another chance. Moreover, we could really do with some additional options in midfield with some of the other sicknotes not looking like seeing any action again in a hurry. Adeyemi and Huws have sadly had injury problems that seem to have rumbled on longer than Brexit!

so Teddy banging in hatties...Rowe already scored 3 for Lincoln .. free scoring players who cant get into a team desperately short of goals ? Is anyone else slightly bemused by this?

Well done the young blues at least something is looking bright on the horizon blue wise haha

Am I right in thinking we won the reserve league the year we got relegated from the Premiership?

The under 23's will be in a higher league than the first team at this rate.😂👍

Well done boys - great result. Bizarre that both our young squads are doing so we'll, whilst their seniors are not. Appreciate that the leap between the different levels is significant, but when PL says he wants all levels to play the same way, you have to wonder if the U-18s and U-23s seem to have cracked that ethos, why haven't the first team? Of course squad quality, team selections and set up are key factors, but we don't seem able to impose ourselves on any C'ship team for long enough, or effectively enough. On today's evidence would it be such a risk to start Teddy on Saturday? The added - much needed - creativity he brings might produce real benefit to the first team.

Great result, well played lads. Please keep Bishop fit for Saturday.

I would agree with the general concensus that Teddy should be starting games for us now. I think we'll recognise when PL has given up on our chances of survival in the championship as these talented youngsters will begin to get more first team action. Despite our languishing at the bottom of the championship the future looks bright.....assuming we hang on to our talent of course!

Our midfield has been and is fragile. We need at least one more hit the ground running injury free midfield transfer in. Doesn't take a genius to realise. Thought Nolan was looking half decent at first, but he can't play in a ropey team

There's no finer sight than ‘the Bish' in full flow with the ball at his feet. We desperately need more flair and creativity in the side on a regular basis, as ‘facefacts' correctly IMO said on another page over the w/e “we are struggling to play out from the back cause we lack the quality to do so”. The transition from being hard to beat to playing pass and move possession based football at senior level is just a step to far for ‘most' of the remaining players from them 5 years.

The comment no point in picking nolan can't play in Ropey team is silly might as well not pick anyone then .

I understand & agree that Bish has made his case for being picked for Senior side but is his, Huws, Dozzell experience telling us about playing people to soon. Rashford appears OK but our youngsters get injuries so early.

If Bishop was one of Lamberts signings he would play him.. He s played well every game he's played. If he doesn't play Saturday it will be a crime of the highest order.

Bishop play Saturday? I can hear PL now. He's young, it wouldn't be fair. Blah blah blah.

@herfie youngsters have cracked it, first team have been too far ingrained with the anti football ethos over the past few years to change in my opinion.
