Town Block Derby's Move for Pennington
Thursday, 31st Jan 2019 19:28

TWTD understands Town have blocked Derby County’s attempt to sign Blues loanee Matthew Pennington on loan for the second half of the season.

The Rams were keen for Pennington’s season-long loan at Town from Everton to be ended prematurely to allow him to move to Pride Park with a view to signing the centre-half or right-back on a permanent basis in the summer.

However, as is common with loans, all three parties, the two clubs and the player, have to agree to the loan being curtailed and the Blues were unwilling to cut short the 24-year-old’s spell, despite the recruitment of right-back James Bree from Aston Villa earlier this evening.

As things stand, barring a late and currently unexpected move prior to the 11pm deadline, the deal to sign Bree concludes the transfer window business at Portman Road, both incoming and outgoing, the full-back having become Paul Lambert’s seventh January addition.

Bree's recruitment and Pennington staying at Town means the Blues have six loanees with only five permitted in a matchday squad, a situation which Lambert doesn't see as ideal.

Speaking at his press conference this afternoon, he said: “To me it shows up the loan system for what it is. It’s incredible, you have maybe six loans or seven loans but you can only have five in a matchday squad.

“That’s why I said before that the loan system isn’t healthy. Maybe one or two is totally fine, but not this because you’re always having to manage that scenario.

“For a manager it’s not a great scenario to be in. But by the same token you have to get guys that you think can try and help as well but you’ve also got the disappointment of leaving one or two out and then clubs can ask why they’re not playing.

“It creates something that you could do without and that’s why I’ve said the club’s got to get back to getting its own players, whether it’s young players coming through, great, even better if that happens. Or we have to go and try and buy. One or two loans is fine but this scenario is no good.”

He added: “Six players, seven players, in a matchday squad you can only pick five. The clubs get involved saying, ‘Why’s he not playing, why’s this one not playing?’.

"You’ve got all those sort of things, that’s why the loan system for me [doesn’t work]. One or two maximum, not more. But that’s the way the club is at the minute, but we’ll hopefully rectify that.

“The minuses outweigh the pluses when you have too many loans, I think that’s the way to view it."

Aside from Bree's signing, the only deal involving Town on deadline day was Shane McLoughlin's departure for AFC Wimbledon.

Elsewhere, reports linking Ellis Harrison with Portsmouth came to nothing, Pompey signed James Vaughan on loan from Wigan, while Barry Cotter was reported to have turned down a move to League Two Swindon and the Blues are believed to have rebuffed a Dundee United loan move for young defender Corrie Ndaba.

Hang on, don't we now have more loanees in our squad than we're allowed to play? Seems an odd one.

HANDS OFF LAMPARD & BIG SPENDING DCFC. LOVING THIS BIT OF NEWS. SOUNDS LIKE A PROPER CHEEKY BID, TYPICAL OF LAMPARD.

DONE ENOUGH DAMAGE THIS SEASON TO ITFC, WITH THE DISRUPTIVE TRANSFER OF WAGHORN. TAPPING UP NO DOUBT.

WELL DONE LAMBERT AND EVANS, STANDING FIRM

There should be no question of a move to Derby, Pennington is here on season loan and that is the end of it. We get no transfer fee if he moves from Everton to Derby so we are right to hold to the deal agreed. We may well need Pennington at centre back if Collins or Chambers get injured, with Nsiala our only other option.

Shame : that will leave us with 6 loan players more than is good for us.

My biggest concern is do we now have a good player who doesn't want to be here? If all 3 parties have to agree and we were the one that didn't how is Pennington going to feel about that?

Show intent by town ...lt gives lambert options depending on who we are playing...this is good business ...we can worry about permanent fixtures next season...if we stay up, if not im happy with what we have in the fringes...not spence obviously

Carter Vickers was on loan to Sheff Utd for the season, last season.
That didn't mean much. Get a few back handers taking place, things change.

When Norwich went down to the third tier a few years ago I asked a friend who is a budgie through and through what went wrong, he stated that they had too many loan players which caused disruption in the camp!! Makes me think do we have the same situation?

ITFC73 - You don't get the whole loan system, I can tell. Let me explain it to you..

Sheff Utd were happy to let CCV go as he wasn't in their team, he was happy to go & so must've been Spurs.

As it says ALL parties have to agree - season long loan or not..

Its easy!!! Get rid of one of the 2 crap srikers we have just got on loan!! Either one it doesn't matter!! Play sears up front as hes the only permanent player who actually doing something this season and play the other 5 loan lads in the match day squad!! We have a quality young striker in Ben Morris for the U23's get him in the team!!

We won't be having loanees next season, I'd stake my house in it. Lambert is doing a temporary job as best he can do with this window and hopes he can keep us up. All WE can do is continue the brilliant support we are currently offering the team to help them in their task.

Yeah, do one Frank Lampard's Derby. Pennington has been a stand out performer for us this season & I'm sure you'd love to add him to the Lawrence & Waghorn Town recruitment program by flashing your cash around. How about doing some decent scouting off your own bat eh?

So now we have 3 right backs, I feel sorry for Emmanuel.

Be interesting to see who is now left out as 4 of the 6 loans were Lambert's signings. The other 2 being first team regulars throughout the season.

Warkystash. Thanks for that. But you don't understand the CCV situation at Sheff Utd. Let me explain. He scored on his debut and played the majority of games before being surprisingly recalled by Spurs. Much to the surprise of the player himself and the disbelief amongst Sheff Utd supporters. 5 days later he was loaned to town. Hope that clears that up. Back hander springs to mind.

ITFC73 - I doubt it, Evans wouldn't fund it!

Kulturarv added 21:21 - Jan 31
Why don't we offer Pennington a permanent deal now? Then we could either keep him or sell him expensive to DC in the summer.

I make you right Warkys Tash. But very un Evans like that's what seemed to have happened.
There was no 3 way agreement. The way round it, appears, is Spurs recalled. Then reloaded to us when Evans, it appears, coughed up.
