Lambert: Norwich Keeper-Coach Challenged Me to Fight
Tuesday, 12th Feb 2019 14:40

Town boss Paul Lambert has confirmed that Norwich goalkeeping-coach Ed Wooten challenged him to a fight during the melee which took place between the benches just before half-time during Sunday’s East Anglian derby at Carrow Road. The Blues manager was also unhappy with the way one of the home club’s stewards shoved him away from the flashpoint, which was triggered by a Jon Nolan foul on Canaries full-back Max Aarons.

Sky Sports reported this morning that the Blues are set to make an official complaint to the FA regarding the behaviour of the steward.

“That got me angry,” Lambert said when asked about the steward’s push. “I don’t know why he had to get involved. Why did he have to get involved? There was no thing there, there was no reason for him to be involved.

“I heard some things on their side and that’s why I responded. I didn’t need a steward to try and usher me out of the road.

“I’ve never seen anything like that before. At Portman Road do we have stewards in the middle between the two benches? I’ve not seen any. Did they have any at Stoke? Did they have any at Wolves? I’ve never seen anything like that.”

Lambert also confirmed that Norwich goalkeeping-coach Wooton challenged him to a fight, with their head of performance Chris Domogalla having been erroneously been sent to the stands along with the Blues boss by referee Peter Bankes.

“That’s it, yes” he said when quizzed on whether that was what happened. “I tell you what, next time I’ll say, ‘No, you win’. Don’t do it in front of 25,000, do it inside. Then we’ll see.

“I’m not going to stand and take it. No chance. I didn’t even know who the guy was. I don’t even know the guy’s name. I don’t know who he was, whether he was the goalkeeping-coach. Try and stick to what you’re good at. There’s a good idea.

“I don’t know if he played the game or anything. I’m not standing back for that, that’s for sure. Get him to give me a call then, see what happens.”

Wooten, 35, played for the likes of Redbridge, Tiptree United, Halstead Town, Harwich and Parkeston and FC Clacton during his career, while he has also coached at Grays Athletic and Colchester's academy.

Asked to confirm that the club will be making the reported complaint to the FA, Lambert said: “I’ve just come in for training so I’ll have to find out what’s going on. I think the club’s got every right to review and look at things and then say what they’re going to say.

“I’ll say my bit on it, what I thought happened in it. I don’t want the club to be stamped on, that’s for sure.”

Earlier in his press conference, he was asked whether there had been any fallout from the incident and joked: “I got sent flowers and chocolates from Norwich!”

In terms of action against him for the red card, he says he’ll learn more later in the week.

“I’m waiting for the report, I’ve got until Friday for it to come through,” he added. “I’ll have a look at that and see what the version is that everybody saw.

“I know what went on in there and I’ve seen it and there were things said in there. As I said before, there were other things going on in there and that’s why I’m not standing for it, I’ll not let anybody try and anything with the football club or try and bring it down or anything like that.

“And they can talk about having class after the game. They never had class not shaking [Town assistant manager] Stuart Taylor’s hand after the game.

“That goes under the radar but I’m not having anybody belittling this football club, that’s for sure.”

Does he believe it would he harsh if he were to be handed a touchline ban? “In my own eyes, yes. But I’m pretty sure they’ll look at it and they’ll see the different stuff stewards getting involved and all that. When did we have a steward at our dugout? I never see anybody. I've never seen anything like that.

“I’ve been involved in the Premier League, I’ve been at the highest level as a player and at the highest level as a manager, never been involved in anything like that.”

Monarch blue i wanted MM out he was past his sell by date by 2 seasons! All town fans appreciated MM for keeping us up. The football was so awful and boring, i hated it and his attitude towards the fans is what made his job untenable! I for one wont be abusing MM if he ever came back to portman road with another team! MM has gone and i am pleased, the plaster needed ripping off and now its off. I love having a manager who appreciates us!

Next season could be fun!

Wooten played for the likes of Tiptree and FC Clacton. Obviously a serial loser.

Its all about me! why keep on going with this spat unless you simply want to be the centre of attention. What do you gain besides the personal spotlight?. Surely there are more important issues to work on and talk about like replacing the unlucky Sears. Having my doubts - O'Neil should tell him to concentrate on the future.

Premiership, championship, league 1 or 2. It does not matter. If the reports are true that they are true, just play them. Personally I'm our present situation I have no issue with playing them. We are down, tell the youngsters and fans and let um play. They won't learn otherwise.

The point I was making was not the fact that MM has sadly left, and whether or not that was a good or bad thing, although I would suggest that in the light of recent events it wasn't the most inspired of decisions! No that is a matter of opinion.

What my issue was, concerned the comment, accusing Norwich supporters of lacking class in giving a former manager some considerable stick. I found that remark so hypocritical given the torrent of abuse hurled at MM, by a group of scumbags who purport to be Town fans.

Sadly Mr Evans, lacks the "class" of Mr John, who when another bunch of cretinus morons tried to get rid of Sir Bobby...stood firm and the club flourished.

Lambert is now mathematically less successful than Hurst; none of his allegations about the melee make sense - everyone is talking about class but there is a whiff of hypocrisy (at least a whiff) when our Manager seems to be suggesting he should have a fight on behalf of the club - disappointing and embarrassing frankly.

And besides, it looks for all the world like Dromogalla was guilty of nothing more than talking to one of our staff yet Lambert (who has since confirmed that Dromogalla was the wrong man) is caught on camera having a screaming fit at him as they went down the tunnel. And then to questio their steward?? Watch the clip and it is obvious for all to see that were it not for the policeman and steward Lambert would be in a whole lot of trouble having thumped Dromogalla in the chest repeatedly.

Incoherent, distracted, statistically poor having brought in his own questionable loan signings. He let Norwich get under his skin - simple; he should have shown more composure - and yes - class.

Distraction from what's actually happening and some fans are actually falling for it. Brawls in the dugout was never the Ipswich way.

Just because others don't share your rose-tinted view of the former Town manager, I don't think that gives you the right to call them "scumbags" or "cretin(o)us morons", do you?

Everyone is entitled to an opinion if they support this club without having abusive names thrown back at them.

Talking of "Class", I think you need to take a long, hard look at your previous post!

"Sadly Mr Evans, lacks the "class" of Mr John, who when another bunch of cretinus morons tried to get rid of Sir Bobby...stood firm and the club flourished."

The former Town manager you refer to, who shall only be known as "M", had five and a half years at the helm of this club and did nothing in taking it forward in terms of winning promotion or playing entertaining football.

When all is said and done, this is a business. He failed to progress = the business stagnated = he got the boot. It happens in businesses up and down the country and across the world every single day. To say he "sadly left" might be true from your own personal perspective but it is not how very many others see it at all.

He obviously couldn't get the best out of the players at his disposal, players he himself brought in. Just look at how McGoldrick has flourished since joining Sheffield United... playing every week, playing well, scoring goals and creating things for others. Why couldn't he do that for us? Because the previous encumbent you mentioned wasn't good enough at his job to get the lads firing on all cylinders, playing attractive, entertaining, winning football. Simply avoiding relegation year after year after year is not good enough.

KernewekBlue......wake up and smell the coffee!

So the vitriolic abuse MM received in his penultimate game, was "people entitled to an opinion". No it was a bunch of ignorant scumbags doing what ignorant scumbags do. So much so that these scumbags alarmed police that OUR MANAGER was asked to leave via a back door because these scumbags were threatening to attack him with bottles!

In trying to justify the actions of these scumbags, KernewekBlue, I can pay you no better tribure than to quote Jon Cooper-Clarke: "Like a recently disinfected sh*thouse, you're clean round the bend"!

@Monarch_Blue

I seriously object to your tone!

That's just the kind of inept, ill-thought-out commentary I'd expect from someone who misspells the word CRETINOUS when he's throwing barbed insults at those who disagree with his opinion.

For someone to be hypocritical, they would have had to hold a contrary opinion to their actions at some point. To call someone hypocritical, you would need proof that the people you aimed those snide comments at on here were the one's using the threatening behaviour.

At no point have I condoned the use of violence against our previous management or, for that matter, against anyone else, so you'd better get your facts straight matey!

What I object to is your bleeding heart, pitiful, non-stop moaning about the loss of your beloved McCarthy and your attacking anyone who holds an opinion that differs from your own. Far from him "sadly" leaving, he was told to clear his desk, having done a less than satisfactory job. He lost it mentally, rather as you have it appears, and started to react badly to the fans who had seen enough of the mediocre dross he was dishing up week after week in the name of entertainment. Because of his attitude and never failing sense of his own importance, very much like yourself, he had to go.

By the way, your defence of the Norwich fans (and management? ) seems almost fervent? I could say I smell a rat but I won't, as I have no real proof. That's the difference it seems between you and me.

The only one here that's "'round the bend" is you my friend and the jury is still out on how disinfected you really are.
