Edwards: We Will Carry on Fighting
Monday, 4th Mar 2019 06:00

Blues winger Gwion Edwards insists Town will keep fighting despite relegation to League One now appearing an inevitability. The Welshman netted his fifth goal of the season in Saturday’s 2-1 home defeat to fellow strugglers Reading which leaves the Blues 12 points plus goal difference from safety with only 11 games left to play.

“We will carry on fighting, pick ourselves up and go again,” the summer signing from Peterborough said. “We should have won and the way we lost is very disappointing. It hurts."

Town need four wins from their final 11 matches, something which appears an impossible task given that they have won just three so far during 2018/19, even to catch up with the teams outside the relegation zone, let alone pass them, even assuming the unlikely event that they don't pick up any more points.

“We have been written off all season but we have stuck together,” Edwards added. “That’s all we can do, stick together and keep fighting.

“The fans have been brilliant, especially in the situation we have been through. You see how other fans are in a similar situation but they have been right behind us and that helps.

“I will wait my chance and like today, show I’m ready to go. I was happy with the finish. Collin Quaner got a touch and we have worked on that in training with the wingers coming in.”

“It was nice to get on the pitch and get a goal but it was disappointing not to get a point.

"We got back in the game and we should have seen the game out to get at least a point.

“We have let ourselves down again and that has been the story of our season - we don't take our chances and we concede too easily.

“We created chances but we have to take them, we have to put the ball in the net. When it comes down to it we have to be more compact, especially late on, as a team.”

Having made a bright start to his first season with Town, Edwards picked up a groin injury which limited his involvement before he returned to the side as a sub in the home game against Stoke a fortnight ago.

“It is frustrating,” he admitted. “Before Christmas I was playing a lot, then I got a couple of niggly injuries in January so it is a case of getting going again. And get a few more starts."

Does he feel he has done enough in his three sub appearances to win a place in the XI? “You don't want to be left on the bench, or left out, but it is not just me other players have missed out so you just have to keep going and get back in.”

Meanwhile, Town’s table-topping U23s are in action at Playford Road this afternoon when they face Burnley (KO 1pm).

We've been written off all season because we can't defend, create few chances and can't score.

Oh my word, the Portman Road P. R guru has come out with a great one this time! Carry on fighting? YOU HAVEN'T STARTED FIGHTING, YOU HAVE NO INTENTION OF FIGHTING, YOU HAVE NO FIGHT!!!! Stop fobbing off the fans and get real. I personally am sick of listening to P. R spin. Do you really think we are that stupid!!!!!

I didnt see any lack of commitment, just Naivety in abundance and a lack of real quality! The first 20 mins we were full of nerves and the pathetic single striker system really didntt help either!

Edwards looked good at times!

I am glad that the team is not giving up, although we are down, we still have our pride and would be nice to get off the bottom spot!!

You say we need 4 wins from 11 games. Really? That is one hell of a slur on Rotherham, Reading, and Bolton - to suggest that none of them will pick up even one further point. Face facts, we're the worst team in the league and we're going to finish bottom

Town need 4 wins from their last 11 matches?!

How do you work that out?

Are the team's above us going to lose every one of their remaining matches?

Given that other teams will also pick up more points now, natural in the relegation scrap, we would probably be looking at 9 wins out of 11 to have a chance!

I think 8 wins are needed, i cant see it happening! sadly.

Can't see us winning one game. Of our three wins so far two have been dead jammy. The defender's ball watching for the first goal Saturday was unbelievable. Three were drawn to the ball leaving the forward acres of space inside the penalty area. To think that years ago we were in the position where we could argue amongst ourselves about who to play out of Berra. Smith and Chambers.

If the club had appointed a proper manager , rather than Hurst , we would not have signed the poor quality players he did and have tweeked the side not butchered it . With that scenario it is more than likely we would be relatively safe and able to continue a rebuild. It is players of Edwards ability being signed that has brought the club to the present level but it will need better than that to get promotion!

God sake, another player posting the same rubbish repetitive interview... You've had 30 odd games to fight and sadly you've been very lacking

No lack of fight, but insufficient quality and too many injuries.

What I don't understand is why people are so angry at players and the manager refusing to throw in the towel. Do we not want men who continue to battle right to the very end? Will we not need that in getting back to the Championship next season?

To be fair to Edwards he's not exactly going to say that we are a complete shambles and we'll be luck to win two more matches this season.

No lack of effort on the pitch we're simply not good enough.

The defence is the main issue - none are really up to the job in terms of being above average championship players. And I include skuse on that as well.

"We've been written off all season"...yeah, to be fair, with some justification!

I really hope Sunderland go up so at least we'll have the best ground in the division.

Playing 3 at the back and one up front is usually reserved for teams going for an away draw not a home win, it's just a sign of a terrible weak defence.

Edwards is one of the only players in our team that can run at players and cause the opposition problems. Personally in League One I'd be starting him and Danny Rowe. And if Bishop can stay fit he could unlock some defences too. And of course Alan Judge but not sure if he'll still be around next season. I'd like Edwards on one wing and Danny Rowe on the other with with Judge and Bishop in the centre.
And got a lot of stick yesterday from Norwich fans as a lot of the parents and grandparents in my lad's football team are Norwich fans. Every Sunday has been unbearable. It's been a long painful season on that front. They were saying yesterday just 6 more wins that should do it and saying the Owls could do them a big favour tonight. Also, they said they had heard Ipswich were trying to sign a dog in reference to that brilliant dog that was on the pitch pre-match that helped save the old lady's life. I said we might be two leagues apart next season but the season after we'll hopefully be playing each other again! Not much ammo to fire back with admittedly right now but things can change fast in football. Remember when Portsmouth were in Europe and won the FA Cup and were in the Prem for several consecutive seasons. Meanwhile Southampton ended up in League One and now it's been a total role reversal for some time now. So there is always hope! Anyway, fair play to Norwich, they've really turned their season around. But they really are taking delight in kicking us while we're down and it won't be forgotten. And the more they give it now, the more they will get it back when the tables are turned. So I say to them enjoy it while it lasts (after all we would be so will just have to bide our time) but don't be surprised to see things levelling out a lot quicker than you might expect! COYB!!! Also, Wolves are now leading the way over WBA, so that is another one to give us hope. Teams can have the better of the argument for a decade and get complacent and think it will be like that forever only to end up with real egg on their faces! Seen it happen time and time again. It even happened for Man City eventually! But I think our version will be more akin to Southampton and Pompey. COYB, let's rebuild in League One and regain some pride and respect with our academy starlets helping take us back into the promised land.

Edwards has no doubt been told to say this by the Club's PR Department, who still need to sell a few tickets between now and the end of the seaon.

A few deluded souls will still believe but it's been obvious to most of us for months what the end game would be this season. The table doesnt lie and we are the worst side in the Championship by a country mile!

I didn't make that point very well, I meant to catch up the teams who are safe, let alone get ahead of them.

The defence & especially captain proper bloke have been the problem for at least 2 years. Mccarthy papers over the cracks by simply out scoring the opposition. We all know that our defence can't hold on to a lead & even the games won (THREE ) our goal was lucky to survive

And Norwich can barely keep a clean sheet in League One, so imagine the outcome in the Premier League! Once the Phoney War Honeymoon is over for them in the Summer (should they go up - which is looking rather likely now!) and the hostilities start in the Premier League, I can see Tim Krul having to work a heck of a lot of overtime! Wait till they get that fixture list and then it will fully dawn on them! First game Man City away, let's hope so! Their current defence in the Premier League would be a shambles! Their other problem is they often seem to beat the better teams in the Championship (that's why they beat us - just joking of course!) and slip up to teams you'd expect them to beat, they've made a habit of this down the years. On paper their run in looks the best, but I wonder if playing some of those teams down the bottom desperate for points will actually be worse than playing teams in the middle or nearer the top. It's still not impossible that Norwich will be experiencing some Play-Off pain in the not too distant future, especially if Sheff Utd manage to win tonight! I think they'll go up but after seeing them yesterday seeming so confident I did start to wonder, mainly because I've often found in football that when fans get over confident it comes back to bite them hard on the bum!

What else can Edwards say ? In my opinion it isn't about lack of fight it's about lack of quality. Edwards was a decent signing but apart from Nolan, the rest of pre and early season signings are not up to it. Evans rightly bowed to pressure from supporters to not give another contract to MM but he was naive to listen to the calls from people on here to appoint a manager of Hurst's ilk. We were doomed from that point as our goal scorers looked at him and said I'm off. To be effectively relegated in early March is difficult to accept but it was Hurst's failure and a long list of injuries that has caused that, not a lack of fight.
