Skipper Chambers Linked With Chicago Fire
Monday, 4th Mar 2019 16:18

Town skipper Luke Chambers is reportedly a target of MLS side the Chicago Fire.

According to the Daily Mail, the Fire are keen to add a central defender to their squad with Chambers said to fit the bill both from a playing and financial perspective.

Chambers is out of contract with the Blues in the summer but with the club having an option to keep him for a further season.

Manager Paul Lambert recently said he had spoken to his captain, who joined Town on a free transfer in 2012 after leaving Nottingham Forest, about staying at Portman Road beyond this season, stating that Chambers, 33, and Cole Skuse, 32, both have a massive part to play in the club going forward.

He added that owner Marcus Evans is also set to talk to the one-time Northampton defender about his future.

A good player reads the game & a good captain marshalls his defence. Neither of these include Chambers. As regards our list of all time skippers, cant include him with Nelson, Baxter, Mills, Butcher or Holland can you !!!!

Whether you are a fan of Chambo or not, if he does leave then I'm sure that at least we can all agree that like us he loves the club and has been totally committed. For that i am extremely grateful to him.

I know this will get me in trouble but I am not quite sure why Chambo is now the pantomime villain on here and obviously plainly disliked by one or two.

I have seen him put his head on the block, almost literally at many games, away in particular, and to me he is the consumate professional and has been a great leader.

He played out of position without moaning, possibly to the detriment of his game, and unlike the ward of sicknotes we currently have at the club there are very very few games he misses,,even if not fully fit.

OK---we all get older and may not be effective as we once were but if he does leave I will be somewhat sad but please let him leave with dignity and his head held high, that is the least he deserves.

Well said Razor. It saddens me that TWTD has so many unbalanced views that are personal in nature.

Never thought that much of him but he did fit the McCarthy style brilliantly, hoof it anywhere. For him this would make great sense. We lost our best defender Tommy Smith to America & he seems to love it. LC might be a great leader, unfotunately his football has cost us so many points but good luck to him.

Ok so Luke Chambers is the problem is he?

I defend everybody's right to have an opinion but when this comes to vilifying a player who has given his absolute all for the club then I take exception.

I have watched this club for 55 years and I tell you what our most famous Captain Mick Mills was probably one of our least talented footballers in those great Bobby Robson sides, in fact he often played a shocker especially when he was played out of position to cover for others. Does that sound familiar. But one thing about Mick Mills was he always kept his head up and kept encouraging others, he quite rightly went on to become a legend and earned a great deal of respect as a player and a captain.

I am not suggesting Luke Chambers by today's standards is a top Championship centre half and in his ageing years perhaps he has struggled a bit more.

I may be at that “grumpy” age but I don't believe in scapegoating people who have been excellent servants to this club for several years.

Society seems to have created the who can we blame syndrome - like Johnny Foreigner for all our current economic woes. (Well perhaps that's more our politicians that want to frame somebody else to deflect criticism for their own incompetence).

If Luke gets a terrific deal in Norh America then I will be pleased for him and would encourage him to go for it and leave Ipswich Town behind - he would probably think deeply about being seen to leaving a sinking ship, I am sure some of those now criticising him will then go and accuse him of this if this happens to be the case.

Defending is a team game and remember how crap we all thought our defence was before MM joined shipping 5 and 6 goals in some matches. Those same defenders Luke being one of them turned it around and yes we did have some help a few months later by acquiring one Mr Berra.

I just think that as ITFC fans this forum is more worthy of considered comment but not necessarily does this have to be uncritical.

This is a captain who has recently been playing for the club with a broken wrist. He's previously played with cracked ribs and all manner of other injuries that would keep many other players out. He's barely missed a game in seven years, making over 300 appearances. He was a stalwart in the back four for our four top half finishes in five seasons under Mick, uncomplainingly playing out of position at right back for much of the time.

Meanwhile, Knudsen sits in the stands at a critical stage of the season hoping his agent can get him a move away and we can hardly get Collins on the pitch.Hardly surprising the defence has imploded this season when Chambers lacks a quality central partner like Berra/Webster/Carter-Vickers. He's variously had lower league tat like Donacien and Nsiala alongside him, then Pennington, a kid learning his trade and Knudsen, a left back filling in.

Chambers was at the London branch night a few years back. He's as impressive and committed a captain as you could hope to hear or meet who will undoubtedly go into management one day. All the players look up to him and he and Skuse keep the dressing room and kids in line. He's so committed to the cause he has half a dozen of our Academy players living with him in an annexe at his home.

Absolutely disgraceful the abuse a loyal club captain and servant is getting on here from supposed supporters.

its a win win all round,he is one of our top paid players[and the revenue in div 1 is a lot less],it would be good for him to build a little nest egg for the future,

budgieplucker, comparisons with Mick Mills are erroneous, Mills played 42 times for England, some as captain, their records and abilities are in different leagues. I don't think many people on here are questioning his commitment, what they are suggesting is his lack of ability. He has made mistakes in the last two years that have cost goals and games, while his distribution has been diabolical. I would certainly be happy to see him remain at the club in a coaching role but I guess he wants a last pay day which I wouldn't begrudge him.

Comparing Micky Mills to Chambo is like comparing Messi to me.
Mills was one of the country's top full backs.
He was an international.
He was a trophy winner, and the clubs most successful captain.
Chambo couldn't be further away from the above.
Chambo is leading us down to our lowest point in football, with legend status it seems. Very odd.

You certainly can't fault his leadership and commitment to the cause as many have already said on here.... but he should have "taken one for the team" in the build up to the Reading winner on Saturday....

I'm a football supporter.
I spend my hard earned cash supporting town.
So i only look on the football side.
I don't care if Luke is a great bloke.
The thought of Chambo will bring no comfort or great me.ories when I'm watching Town v Bury next season.

ITFCSince 1973... I entirely agree - Wigan's equaliser the week before is another example of his poor defending.... but as I said, you certainly can't fault his leadership and commitment to the cause.... unfortunately that doesn't always win us games !

I'm just concerned he has been linked with Chicago fire.

If I were Lambert I'd be asking him what he was up to in Illinois with a box of matches.

He'd be daft not to take the offer of playing in the MLS. Obviously one to consider as future Town manager. Playing wise, time looks like it's taking it's toll as both wingers strolled past him for the 2 goals on Saturday. He could become the greatest fist pumper in the West!!

I find it hard to understand how a man so loyal to Ipswich over the years is receiving some very negative comments. I am sure he will be the first to admit that he he has never been the greatest defender to wear the Blue shirt. However I cannot think of anyone else over the years aside from Hunter, Butcher and Beattie who would play with injuries and give his all for the club with a never say die attitude.
From what I read he does an enormous amount to help other players settle into our club and the badge means a hell of a lot to him.
I recall all too well him deliberately running across the width of the pitch right in front of the Barclay end to try to get under the Norwich fans' skins. No doubt he took much abuse in doing so but he never wavered from promoting the club crest.
I have been critical at times of his playing ability but have never doubted his loyalty to Town.
The reason for our impending relegation is not down to him and I for one really hope he remains at the club in some capacity. We will be much poorer without him.

Reality check here. Luke will know he has made mistakes this season and last....more mistakes than in previous years. HOWEVER, we have not been able to attract a better CB for the past 5 years in the Championship so what makes anyone on here think we will get better in now.

Without the constant pressure of losing every game, the previous mismanagement, and with a midfield who have a pre-season to get some support play in their locker, it may well be that Luke will thrive in League 1. If he does, we do.

And to the point about being a legend. Of course he is not, but if he sticks around, gets us promoted back with a promising and youthful team who can compete in the top half of the Championship, then we will have a different discussion.....as there is one simple rule, you do need to win to be a legend !

Cakeman (and others)....I think it might be because, as much as he is a loyal Ipswich man, he is being played time and time again when he has put in so many dreadful performances and made so many howlers and seems to be undroppable (if that is such a word) by the dark lord, Wurst and now PL. He is also guilty of allowing strikers to get the better of him time and time again and has also lost Ipswich games this season and last by his inept and clueless defending. Don't get me wrong, he's not the only one, but so many times you hear the likes of Brenner Wooley saying "Chambers, what were you doing!"
The guy is a liability and should not be anywhere near the first team next season when we rebuild in league 1. I think most supporters of a certain age (including myself) can remember some bad defending by players, but you always knew you had strikers up the other end that could go and bang them in and so the defending could be excused if you won. Sadly, Luke Chambers makes loads of mistakes and there are no decent strikers to cover up for him.....Bottom line is this....his totally inadequacies as a defender and his many mistakes leading to goals against are being shown up and this season more so. He has had his time and he clearly needs moving on as a complete liability. We want to bounce back up so he needs to go!

I note with concern the implication of losing Chambers, this time last year it was apparent Mick would be on his way out and unsurprisingly the likes of Waghorn, Garner, Webster, McGoldrick, along with the loanees could not exit Portman Road quick enough, Chambers whether people like it, is the glue that holds the dressing room and the younger professionals together, accept Chambers performances this season have not been of the standard all would have desired but partnered with sub standard defenders this season has not helped, looked well below 100% fitness on Saturday and in a back 3, Luke has to be the central part due to his lack of pace. I fear if Chambers/Skuse depart there would be absolutely no leaders in that squad on the pitch/dressing room.
2

Carberry added 16:24 - Mar 5
Management, you are right but that is no reason to persevere with him in League 1. The manager needs to find new leaders and /or get him involved on the coaching side. It's about good recruitment something we haven't been very successful with because of a combination of poor selection and lack of funds.
