Skipper Chambers Linked With Chicago Fire
Monday, 4th Mar 2019 16:18

Town skipper Luke Chambers is reportedly a target of MLS side the Chicago Fire.

According to the Daily Mail, the Fire are keen to add a central defender to their squad with Chambers said to fit the bill both from a playing and financial perspective.

Chambers is out of contract with the Blues in the summer but with the club having an option to keep him for a further season.

Manager Paul Lambert recently said he had spoken to his captain, who joined Town on a free transfer in 2012 after leaving Nottingham Forest, about staying at Portman Road beyond this season, stating that Chambers, 33, and Cole Skuse, 32, both have a massive part to play in the club going forward.

He added that owner Marcus Evans is also set to talk to the one-time Northampton defender about his future.

so who else in the current squad would we play instead of chambo then?? yes he has made errors but what about the many last ditch blocks saving tackles etc he has managed,i am not convinced that the current crop of youngsters are as good as many think, lancaster looks a natural footballer to me but the jury is still out on the others,so unless we are bringing in a centre half to challenge his position ,toto? knudsen wants out, so lets give the guy a bit of respect please, there are many others who i would get shot of adeyembi huws spence knudsen and all the loanees first before our captain,at least he would run through a brick wall for the club , where are the other guys who have sat on the sidelines taking the £ and contributing nothing!!

If we're serious about bouncing straight back, then we have a man named Judge, who could step straight into Chambo,s shoes.
He also comes with the added ability of being able to pass a ball 40yds. Not only that, but to a player in the same coloured shirt. Seems an age since we had a captain with that critical ability.
I think we've all seen in a very short time here, gives his all, all of the time.
And would have the respect from any player at the club, and any player in opposition.
As for the youngsters, just tell them to study Judges game. Good movement, good passing, knows how to conduct himself etc etc.
He's looking for one last good long term contract to take him to the end of his career. If we're serious about the bounce back, we need to get this wrapped up ASAP. #Judgetoleadusback

happy being blue. Cakeman. We have a certain “Wolf” at Swindon, he's getting rave reviews.
But we've seen for ourselves how good he is, although not since last summer.
When he comes back in May, it will be fresh from a season slogging it out in L2. Where by all accounts he has come on leaps and bounds.
And imo we may have some player there, some central defender there.
In fact he's a modern day central defender, he has the ability to play anywhere on the pitch if called upon. I and it appears many others are seeing a special player developing.
Currently one player on our books who will be playing premiership football sooner rather than later. He will slot straight into our defence next season, freshly prepared from this season in L2.
Bred by Brlan Klug.

Comparing Chambers to Mick Mills! 😳....Lord give my strength !😂

The day Chambers allowed McCarthy to push him out to right back, was the beginning of the end for player and manager! Up until that 'fateful' day McCarthy was doing just fine! Bottled the 3 centre halves into 2 don't go decision! Undroppable Chambers there on in.....unfortunately !

Londontractor. Do you vote me down continually because of my user name. My views?
I struggle to believe it's my views.
I post positive about a fantastic player we have, a fantastic young player we have.
You vote me in a negative way because of that?
Micks gone, Luke's going, The futures looking brighter than it has for 10 years. Get over yourself.
Be carefull what you wish for...all my wishes are slowly but surly coming true.
Bring on L1, I'll have my club back. For that I'm so grateful. And can't wait for the ride to begin. Where ever it takes us, I can't wait.

I totally agree with you itfcsince73. I know you and I haven't always agreed but on this occasion I think we do. Sadly over the past two years or so, younger players have been left out so Captain Calamity, Excuse and Knudsen can play week in and week out when they have no business. They.in my opinion are liabilities and should have been put out to pasture ages ago. If Chambers has been, in some people's opinion, an inspiration to others this year, look at where we are and God knows which players you would consider worse. Been a supporter since 1976 and the only player that I may consider worse is a certain Manuel thetis!!!!

No worries bluemike. Agree, disagree. That's what it's all about, And I suppose why we all love the game so much. And of course why we all love ITFC.
There appears some who hate to agree and hate to disagree.
Which beggars belief why they bother reading and or commenting.
I love TWTD because of the vast difference of opinion. And some great debating on occasion.
But the downside is the haters of everything, anyone and anyhow. I'm sure some hate TWTD itself.
I don't comment for up votes, I comment on my opinion and how I feel football related.
Plenty hate me for it. I'm sure some might agree on occasion, who knows.

Well said 73.
A difference of opinion is what this site is about.
Perhaps you should take londontractor to the travel lodge.
You could spend the night mass debating together?

Whatever his shortcomings as a footballer - which, in all honesty, are probably no worse than most of his team-mates at this level - LC is the only natural leader we have. It's obvious to anyone who has served in the armed forces, that he's someone you'd trust, who'd earn the respect of both superiors and subordinates and would give nothing less than total commitment. In the shambles inflicted upon us under ME's stewardship, LC has been a beacon of integrity and almost single-handedly held the team together. Evans and his appointed managers have much to thank LC for.

So to be small minded enough not to recognise, or criticise adversely, his role and influence perhaps fails to see the bigger picture of a club in slow, inexorable, decline; and an individual who has done his utmost to prevent what is now inevitable. Don't blame him for being selected to. play over 300 games for the club; or for lack of wise investment of limited funding; or for a succession of poor decisions that produced the teams equally poor managerial appointments fashioned.

If I were LC I would grab this potential opportunity with both hands.

I'm not one to usually post on here but some of the comments above have driven me to make some observations. I come from a footballing family (including a former Town player who didn't quite make it) so I hope some of this is said from a position of at least a little knowledge about the game.

It appears as fans we have been on a downhill slope for so long that we are prepared to accept mediocrity in our team so readily that we forget what ITFC is all about. There is no doubting Luke Chambers' commitment, heart and passion for our club but surely those things are prerequisites for any player who pulls on the blue shirt of our beloved club. All of Bobby' Robson's players had it, so did George Burley's and also Joe Royle's.

However, the clue is in the name of the game - football. Unfortunately, although Chambers is a great leader, in terms of football ability he's mediocre at best. Before some of you scream at me for making him a scapegoat or insulting him, this is an observation and not in any way a criticism of him as a person. I don't question any of his personal qualities, just his footballing ability. I'll also make the point here that he's not the only player in our squad who is limited as a footballer by a long way. I still watch my father in his 70s play football in the back garden with his grandchildren and even now, he can trap a ball within a millimetre of his right foot and pass it directly someone else within even thinking about it, and this is someone who didn't even make it in the game. This is not something you can train into someone, they either have that natural ability or not, and you can train into players the other stuff like positional sense, but without being able to control and pass a football, a player is already playing catch up and will have a limit to the level he can achieve.

I have much higher expectations for Ipswich Town centre backs. I sort of remember Terry Butcher's wonderful 30 yarder late in the relegation season 1985/86 (can't remember who against) or how about Kevin Beattie's first touch against Bohemians Prague in 1980/81 when he clubbed a 20 yard free kick into the top corner just after coming on as a sub. For those of you who say we can't attract such quality now, my answer in simple - you don't have to buy them - with a proper youth set up there's no need - that's what Robson did. As for making excuses such as being played out of position, a good footballer can play anywhere, providing he has the basic skills of being able play football. I'm sorry, but Chambers just doesn't posses those skills, and these are being showed up more and more as he ages.

Playing out of position also leads me to the next point, and the mention above of comparing Chambers to the legend that is Mick Mills was ill advised at best. Mills played most of his career at left back, but was right footed, and he was a proper footballer. If you don't believe me, try watching the 26 minute YouTube video of the 6-0 thrashing of Man Utd in 1979 (doesn't listening to Gerry Harrison takes you back BTW). Mills played centre midfield (yes a regular full back in the midfield holding role) and please watch the brilliant first touch pass to Alan Brazil for the first goal, and the general range of passing. Just awesome - are we really comparing that to Luke Chambers?

I'm very happy that PL appears to understand some of this and at last we have a manager who wants us to play football the right way. His problem is that he has such a lack of footballing quality in his squad that even the loan players couldn't save us because the rot was so deep rooted he was on a hiding to nothing. The proof will be in what he can do with a hopefully much younger, leaner squad with a full pre-season behind him.

So I say big thanks to Luke Chambers for doing his very best and showing great commitment to the cause, but it's time for him to move on. The good news is that he has all the qualities that mean maybe one day he will make it as a manger. For now, hopefully Lambert will give the likes of Luke Woolfenden their chance, because with Evans' continued underinvestment, that's our only hope.

By the way bluemike, I done a Saxonblue74 and looked back at some of your previous. As I knew I mostly agreed with you or thought I did.
It appears ours views regarding the club and players are very similar, through this season anyway?
So not sure where disagreement has come from.
Not unless you've mistaken me for SWN98 or Gcon...Lol.

Left peg. Great words. And a shame not to hear your thoughts more often.
And yes Gerry Harrison, if you didn't go to the match he would be your insider with the highlights.
Can hear him now.......Mills, great ball to Wark, Gates.....MARINER what a goal.
Great memories. Great times.

Sorry. Good captain but time to go. Good opportunity for him to make a fresh start and try something new. Good opportunity for us to save on the wage bill and be able to offer a decent contract to Judge. If an offer comes in for Skuse, I'd feel the same and use the wage to offer Keane a contract.

Usual group of sad muppets who have nothing positive to say about a player who has given this club 100% commitment and loyalty. They are the Scum that helped drive MM out .....and we now how well that went!
