Northern Irish Defender to Join Academy
Tuesday, 5th Mar 2019 19:05

Northern Irish teenager Cameron Stewart has signed a three-year scholarship plus a one-year professional deal with the Blues academy starting in the summer.

The 16-year-old defender was spotted by Town at last summer's SuperCupNI tournament when he skippered Co Antrim to the Junior title.

Stewart, who is from Ballymena, says the Blues fought off competition from a number of other clubs for his signature.

"I am delighted to sign the deal with Ipswich,” he told Belfast Live Sport. "They are a big club and it is very exciting to be joining up with them. I can't wait to get over there this summer and working hard.

"I had a few clubs interested in me, including Fulham, Stoke City and Watford. But Ipswich was the club I wanted to join. Thankfully I got spotted at the SuperCupNI and things started to take off from there.”

Stewart was with local Ballymena side Carniny Youth and then Coleraine before joining Linfield, where he has spent the last five years.

Meanwhile, academy midfielder or defender Ryley Scott played for Colchester United’s U23s in last night’s 3-0 defeat to Barnsley at the JobServe Community Stadium.

Scott, who joined Town after a trial late last season, has spent time on loan at Bury Town during this campaign.

Welcome. So many good, positive things happening at the club that are really taking the edge off what's happening on the pitch. We have much to offer at our acadamy if we're being chosen over the likes of Stoke, Fulham and Watford.

I'd wager that he'll never play a game for us and end up at Cork city !

Welcome aboard Cameron, good to see talent looking to join us over PL clubs. I like to think its the clear path forward to senior football that will attract talent in to our club!
