McCarthy Has Sympathy With Town Players Facing Relegation Pay Cut
Sunday, 10th Mar 2019 09:55

Ex-boss Mick McCarthy has expressed his sympathy with his former Town players facing “hefty wage cuts” once relegation to League One is confirmed and insists he doesn’t want to stick two fingers up to his critics at Portman Road following the Blues' disastrous campaign.

Speaking at a press conference earlier in the week in his new role as Republic of Ireland manager McCarthy, who left Town last April after five and a half years at the club, was asked whether the Blues’ season has made him want to give two fingers to his critics in Suffolk.

“Not at all,” he said. “The people who booed I say, well, sometimes you get what you deserve. Be careful what you wish for.

“I still say that the majority of Ipswich Town fans were supportive of me. That’s the biggest part of it.

“I’ve no axe to grind with Marcus Evans or the club. I’ve still got very good relationships with everybody, some really good friends there.

“It summed it up for me when Joe Garner got the equaliser against Wigan and I texted him to say, ‘Well done, bet that pleased you today’ and he came back to me and he said, ‘No gaffer, I was speaking to Chambo [Luke Chambers] today and they all have wage cuts if they go down, and I feel for him’.

“And he is a centre forward who has just scored the equaliser and I get his sentiments. I have got players there who played for me who are going to take hefty wage cuts playing in League One, if that’s where they end up. So, no I don’t want to put two fingers up to them at all.”

Relegation clauses are understood to have been inserted into most if not all of the senior Town players’ contracts with the Blues facing a significant loss of income in League One. TV money will be down by around £6 million while other revenue streams are also likely to be hit.

Reflecting further on Town this season with attendances having been up despite the league position, perhaps a touch ruefully, McCarthy added: “Well, they seem to enjoy it. There were 23,000 there the other night [at the Reading match], singing and dancing, so you know…”

The fact that he texted Garner with that comment shows his true feelings, good on Garner for batting him down. Bloke is so bitter its untrue, question him and you get a volley of abuse, really is his own biggest fan, I'm sure Ireland are looking forward to the his free flowing football, leave Alan Judge alone.

Cheshire.... i left the blue out because in my opinion you are no blue and neither was MM. Every time you comment i wish i could mark you down more than once!

We took a gamble this season which in the short term has not worked, but in the long term it will bring Dividends! If given the choice of another 5 years of MM anti-football no cup wins no entertainment and a safe but boring existence in the championship with a manager who never cared about the people who paid his very generous wages or Entertaining football with the the odd cup win and few seasons in league 1 to come back a better side with the values of ITFC restored by a manager who takes the time to connect with the fans i know which i would choose every time! A choice all true supporters of Town would make!

And for those defending him and saying he was only answering questions, i say this, complete rubbish. At no point was he asked if he sent Garner he txt, he didn't need to put that in his reply!
The man is this loving and gloating, very childish IMO, he would do better to look at himself and ask the question, Where it went wrong with the fans, I can remember the song, Super, super Mick McCarthy being sung at every game! We didn't suddenly decide to not like him, did we? he created the bad feeling with his attitude towards the fans, for example "the more they ask, the less likely i am to do it". Does he not realise as fans, we are allowed to have opinions!
He played a big part in dividing this great club!

Several pints of Yorkshire bitter required for the bloke!

It's almost comforting that, almost a year after his departure, Mick can say something bland but essentially sympathetic towards ITFC and people will STILL find something to get upset about.

You finish bottom of league after 46 games, don't think the players can argue that they don't deserve to have their wages cut. It's the nature of the beast surely? After all, they are the ones that have got us in this mess!

Yes But all the players got bigged up yesterday for fantastic 1-1 draw.
The previous 35 games totally forgotten.
We go down and quite frankly the players are a disgrace to club and fans.

Mick had to go. The problem was the appointment of Hurst and dreadful transfer strategy. Evans actively involved in both.

Not sure how the proper blokes Chambo and Skuse will manage with wage cuts to there combined reported wages of 120k per month.
Maybe Mick the mouth can explain, who in there right mind thought these two was worth that kind of money.? Ultimately paid for by the amazing Town supporters.

Seems Joe Garner is a better man than you, Mick.

Still, I don't feel sorry for well paid professionals taking a wage cut, making them still well paid professionals.

Personally I'd rather be in League One with Lambert than in the Champions League with Mick Mugabe! Mick was the one giving us numbskulls with his turgid brand of football. Lambert is going to get us playing it on the deck again rather than up and at 'em with hopeful balls being launched into the box with about as much accuracy as a Scud missile! Murphy's single season of magic along with Bart performing miracles in the goal, simply papered over the yawning cracks of Douglas, Varney, Hunt and so on.
I was very careful in what I wished for and that was for Mick to exit Ipswich. I got exactly what I wished for and I love it! If Mick showed as much respect to the fans as Lambert has then he would of got to see more 23k crowds too I expect. When you disrespect your flock they tend to turn their back on you, it's as simple as that.
Getting rid of Mick was 100% the right call, getting in Paul Hurst was 100% the wrong call, but that's all water under the bridge now so let's look to the future under Lambert and get back to playing the old Ipswich way which means tidy football on the deck and not smash and grab negative snooze O'Clock football under Mad Mick!
The Mickerodactyl has flown his prehistoric nest and he PRAISE THE LORD he aint ever coming back!

Yes Gary agree. But unfortunately the ones who suffer financial hardship due to relegation are the cleaning lady with her hours slashed, the fella who works in the marketing dept with three kids and a big mortgage who no doubt will be waiting for the “let go” letter in the post.

Dino has forgotten his time at Wolves when they were on the point of Relegation on his watch ???
and he had his laugh at that too.
It has taken time to shake themselves down and march forward to the position where they are now

This bloke is the worst thing that has ever happened to our Club - we deserved better than ever having him on our payroll.

Just go away McCarthy, along with your snide comments - you did much damage to our Club, in more ways than one. All you were ever interested in was prolonging your pay cheque for as long as you possibly could - never have we had a Manager with such a lack of genuine feeling for our great Club.

What did he ever achieve for us ? - bored us to oblivion with his dire Football style, and just about kept us in mid table Championship - thanks to Bart's heroics, season, after season.

We now have our Club back - in it's proper form - onwards and upwards we go - without McCarthy, thank heavens.

MM still does'nt get it,we are jumping up and down and singing because we are being entertained for the first time in ten years. We have got our club back and we are wearing the badge again. The crowd at West Brom yesterday was excellent, sympathy with Darren Moore that we got him the sack. I say to MM get on with your job and leave the jibes alone, very unprofessional. Having supported town since 1967 I am already looking forward to next season and hopefully a team which we can call our own. coyb.

And please nobody say Mick got us into the play offs! We were very lucky Derby dropped a big clanger at home on the last day that season and I wish they hadn't of as would of spared us the pain of Norwich in the play offs! Mick never beat Norwich in all his time with us which is pathetic (how many chances did he want!) and when you pick players like Luke Varney (like he did in the first leg at Portman Road) to try and open up the old enemy (which was meant to be one of our biggest games against them in history) then you know you're doomed before you've even started!

To the people who still support McCarthy :-

He has no more respect for you than anyone else - the only person who means anything to him - IS HIM.

His Football style is archaic - His attitude to Supporters is unprofessional - He is a totally selfish, self opinionated person, who thinks he is always right.

Enough said - but there's more, just as boring, and selfish as the above.

Just leave our Club alone McCarthy - FOREVER.

A decade of Luke Varney:

2008—2009 → Derby County (loan) 7 (1)
2009—2011 Derby County 5 (0)
2009 → Sheffield Wednesday (loan) 4 (2)
2009—2010 → Sheffield Wednesday (loan) 19 (4)
2010 → Sheffield Wednesday (loan) 20 (5)
2010—2011 → Blackpool (loan) 30 (5)
2011—2012 Portsmouth 30 (6)
2012—2014 Leeds United 45 (6)
2014 → Blackburn Rovers (loan) 12 (0)
2014—2015 Blackburn Rovers 11 (0)
2015 → Ipswich Town (loan) 10 (1)
2015—2016 → Ipswich Town (loan) 18 (1)
2016—2017 Ipswich Town 15 (3)
2017—2018 Burton Albion 33 (1)

A one minute Google search would tell you he was never going to do sod all here! Apparently he's scored 6 goals for Cheltenham in League 2 since which is about his level. To play him in a Championship Play Off match against Norwich was just beyond a joke!

Luckily for us Wolves have shown. Sunderland are huffing and puffing but hopefully getting there to show. You can come back from being Marcarthed.
We will be back bigger and stronger.
Feel for the Irish though they have it all to come.
Tip for Irish supporters.....take pro plus to games. It was the only thing that kept me awake for 90 mins.

@ ITFC1973, I tried the pro plus but in the end I had to stoop lower to solpadeine with caffeine. They should call his brand of football Mick McCodeine as it's that painful! :-)
