Chambers Signs New Deal
Friday, 15th Mar 2019 20:42

Town skipper Luke Chambers has signed a new two-year deal with the Blues. The 33-year-old’s current contract was due to end in the summer, although Town had an option for a further season.

“Obviously I’m delighted to be a part of the club’s future for another two years,” said Chambers, who has made 313 starts and one sub appearance, scoring 15 goals, since joining Town in the summer of 2012 after leaving tomorrow's opponents Nottingham Forest.

“I’ve made no secret of the fact that as long as I can play, I want to be here - and maybe beyond that as well.

“I have spoken to [owner] Marcus [Evans] regularly over the last month or so and the manager has shown his support for me and it’s good to get things sorted, for my family as well.

“I’m 33 but to me that is just a number. I feel as fit as I have ever done. I want to play every game here over the next two years. I want to play beyond that.

“I’ve got close on 700 appearances in my career and I want to get to 800 and more. Nothing will drive me on more than to play my part in making a success of this team over the next two years.

“I’m proud to play for this club. I’m proud to be skipper. The club has been a massive part of my career and I want to leave here and people can look back and say, ‘Yeah, he was a good guy to have here’.”

I am pleased more due to his leadership qualities rather than his limited footballing skills. We need his drive & experience to help the young lads

Have to say, the more I think about this the more I cannot understand the Club, obviously Chambers had to jump at his last contract offer in a flash - no brainer for him to accept.

This could have repercussions on, and off the pitch. Let's hope this is the right decision for all concerned - not at all convinced though.

Anyone who are upset about this is insane. The man has broken the pain barrier to play for this club, unlike many others. Evanss is 100% the problem but Chambers is the complete opposite.

We ask for players to give their all for the shirt. Please tell me when he hasn't done this?

What a split bunch the followers of this Club are ?

I very often feel that the attitude of some is that as long as a ball is kicked at Portman Road - all is well.

Some, rightly so too, want more.

I'm sorry but I don't want understand people being upset by this. No one has done all they can to make sure they're available to play for the club which is more than can be said for most.

All we can is players give their all. Please tell me when Chambo hasn't done this!!

We must accept that nobody has really shone this season and confidence has been at an all time low in the team as a whole, it's what happens when you are in our position.

Luke is not immune to that factor and yes he has made mistakes but most overlook some of the last ditch saving tackles and headers the man wins. I have always liked his attitude and the way he has represented the club, he has been an excellent captain.

Next season we will need at least one experienced defender and it's obviously Luke that has got the managers nod. I trust the manager and I trust the captain.

Everyone is entitled to an opinion but some of you only see the negative points with Chambers, it's a shame Collins isn't fit as they would have made an awesome pair of central defenders.

Chambers - you have some excellent traits that are to be admired - BUT, you must improve your play - setting examples include doing so on the pitch, as well as off it - which granted, the latter, you do well.

I would have thought common sense would have been to take up the 1 year option and see where we are after that.
If that wasn't good enough for Chambers then so be it.
I think he might do a job in league 1 and overseeing the youngsters coming through, but he isn't good enough for the championship...

Have to say, the more I think about this, I'm a bit disappointed it's not 4 years.

Good to see the negativity was just round the corner with some fans! Pathetic hes been a terrific leader for us.

Regretfully I have to agree that this is not a very positive move and could prevent some of our young defenders getting experience and the chance to show what they could do at League 1 level.

Moan, moan, moan. All you moaners don't even know that he will be a regular next season and I personally don't think he will be. It is not just on the pitch where he works but off it as well. I think he may well still be here after his playing career and good luck to him I say.
Lambert is no fool and if Chambo is not good enough he won't play him simple.

Anyone who thinks this is a good thing, needs their head seeing too, either that or they were hypnotised by his fist pump.

I would give all for the shirt and I'm 50. Does that mean I should be in the team? He is useless! Why do you support him? I would give everything too but does that mean you would want me to play too?

I've never seem him make a tackle. He only ever tries to block a shot. I've never seen him win a header. When he clears the ball he miss hits it. He is always out of position. He backs away from players. He is slow at tracking back. He blames every other player around him when the opposition scores.

Other than that he is a great player! He would get in any reserve team on an Ipswich and district Sunday morning football league division 12 team.

Ffs I love your enthusiasm Chambo but you are a weak link in our squad now. I hope you prove us all wrong and make me look a cu3t. I just want to love ITFC like the days of old.

The state of some of you lot commenting on this.

This is good news for the club - Chambers so important on and off the field.

Do you lot really think you know better than the 4 managers here who have played him every week and given him new contracts here, including Lambert?!

Captain. Leader. Legend.

I don't get the negativity about this. Yes he's made mistakes this season but name me someone who hasn't.
Also he's been playing with a broken wrist and foot injuries. Most of our so called better players would rather spend time on the treatment table than putting their bodies on the line for the club. He's not the greatest player, he acknowledges this, but he never gives less than 100%. He's going to be important next season along with Skuse, as we're going to have a lot of youngsters in the team so their experience will be vital.
Also if you're not going to buy a season ticket because of Chambers signing a new contract then I don't think you can call yourselves ITFC supporters and it would be better if you stayed away and let the true fans support the team.
