Chambers Signs New Deal
Friday, 15th Mar 2019 20:42

Town skipper Luke Chambers has signed a new two-year deal with the Blues. The 33-year-old’s current contract was due to end in the summer, although Town had an option for a further season.

“Obviously I’m delighted to be a part of the club’s future for another two years,” said Chambers, who has made 313 starts and one sub appearance, scoring 15 goals, since joining Town in the summer of 2012 after leaving tomorrow's opponents Nottingham Forest.

“I’ve made no secret of the fact that as long as I can play, I want to be here - and maybe beyond that as well.

“I have spoken to [owner] Marcus [Evans] regularly over the last month or so and the manager has shown his support for me and it’s good to get things sorted, for my family as well.

“I’m 33 but to me that is just a number. I feel as fit as I have ever done. I want to play every game here over the next two years. I want to play beyond that.

“I’ve got close on 700 appearances in my career and I want to get to 800 and more. Nothing will drive me on more than to play my part in making a success of this team over the next two years.

“I’m proud to play for this club. I’m proud to be skipper. The club has been a massive part of my career and I want to leave here and people can look back and say, ‘Yeah, he was a good guy to have here’.”

I for one am glad Chambers is given another contract, we need his experience and enthusiasm around the club. I don't slag players off who give their all for the club and have done since arriving at the club. Yes he is in the twilight of his career and probably won't play all the games but his presence around the club is invaluable. I can't believe people worship Collins who can do no wrong but is obviously finished as a player and has contributed little to the club since his arrival. I'd say to supporters who are on Chambers back turn your attentions to Huws and Adeaimi or whoever he is called. How much have we paid on wages and how much have they given us in return?

Worryingly it suggests what direction we are heading next season.

Pair him up with Collins and you will be able to hear the creaking from outside the ground. Younger players will pee all over the likes of Chambers and Skuse.

We need fresh blood, not old bones.

I very very rarely venture on to news section, looking at some of the ridiculous posts on here I now remember why.

Great news about Chambo.

Social media is a wonderful tool. It allows "tools" to post all sorts of rubbish!

Sets him up nicely for a coaching job when he retires. Collins is still a solid defender and they both have a part to play in the side, even if they are on the wrong side of 30!

Textbackup - that's the biggest contradiction in terms I've ever seen posted on this site. Who is that even directed towards? More importantly I think this is great news. Chambo has a big part to play both on and off the pitch. Who says he's going to start every game? If Lambert signs a new deal doesn't mean he's going to start playing again! ITFC goes beyond what happens on the pitch.

hhmmm...I can understand the comments about leading our younger players and let's be honest he'll still be captain next season so he will be starting a lot of games BUT if he continues to make the amount of errors he has done this season in League one I personally wish he was off the pitch.

Fress "
I don't get the negativity about this. Yes he's made mistakes this season but name me someone who hasn't.
Also he's been playing with a broken wrist and foot injuries. Most of our so called better players would rather spend time on the treatment table than putting their bodies on the line for the club. He's not the greatest player, he acknowledges this, but he never gives less than 100%".

Why not just pick someone from the crowd who turns up on a Saturday afternoon with a pair of football boots if all you are interested in is someone who gives 100% no matter how useless he is?

I am sure I will get marked down.
Chambers is not good enough. When he has not been in the team we defend so much better. He points the finger and shows passion, but he causes more problems than he solves.
Football is about opinions, but those who will do the down arrow, can I ask. Have you ever played at a decent level, or with players that have? Do you actually go to games?
This is a poor decision and will limit the progression of better players than him.
We need a leader that can actually walk the walk, not shout, point and constantly mess up!
Sorry but PL and Evan's this is a bad move!!

Everyone has an opinion. Some of us are really tired of listening to the "proper bloke syndrome" repeatably blurted by the local media. Yes, Chambers and Skuse have had a good run here but not really achieving anything substantial or eye-catching.. Must be a cushdie time here at ITFC when McCarthy was not even worried about the extra work-load of a cup run. Once again Marcus Evans has proved he is not the owner to lead this club forward. Build a team around our best young players with the good footballers we do have.

Sorry folks. This is just another cheap and unexciting decision by Evans. I just pray Woolfy and one other are our regular centre halfs.

I'm impressed by all the footie experts on here who clearly know better than a succession of football club managers and the OTHER set if supporters that named him Player of the Year. I suspect his inspirational presence will be fundamental next season.

Wow, the amount of disrespect on here for our club captain unbelievable, have a look at yourselves, then have look at the bigger picture. The crop of young players coming through can't speak highly enough of him, there may well be better CBs out there but there are not many better role models. Nice one Chambo, nice one ITFC 👏🏻

I'm in 2 minds about this! 1 yes over the last 3 years he has done what's needed e.g at RB been a leader and shown commitment unlike mcgoldrick. 2 his performance has slipped over the last few year and if hes a first team player in the eyes of Lambert does this hold up progress of youth players and the future? I cant fault his commitment to itfc and if this is his transfer to the coaching staff, I know he will give 100% and you can ask for much more for a guy.

Nightmare decision. More of the same for two years. Must have been cheap.

I am also in two minds about this, but I have to trust PL's decision. I can understand the need for LC's experience and leadership next season, especially if we go with a younger team, as has been suggested we will. On the other hand, it feels as if it's time for renewal and a move away from the hoofball that I am afraid LC seems a bit prone to. Then again, could we expect any of our up-and-coming players to step up and fill the gap for a whole season. And where would we find a replacement if LC left? As I said - in two minds. Maybe PL was in two minds too but decided on balance it was right to keep LC on. Probably the right decision, since a decision had to be made. And we all know what happens if you try to change everything too quickly!

Need to call a spade a spade!! Great leader, brilliant leader!! Terrible defender.

Understand the "in two minds" comments, probably the most level headed way to approach this as both mindsets are correct in my opinion! Yes, we have youth coming through who represent our future and need to be playing for us, but does Chambo's signature mean they won't be? I would suggest that Chambo will now be more of a squad player. His wages would have been significantly reduced upon relegation. Lets face it, we need some depth in our squad given our injuries record and the fact that we need to send Pennington, Bree and Elder back to their parent clubs. Collins cannot be relied upon. Woolfendon is a prospect but certainly unproven to date. Chambo would be an asset to any lge1 squad and I welcome the fact that he's with us for next seasons promotion push.

Look Winston Churchill was a great leader, and he cared, but he never went into the battlefield.

if the plan is to play him, then its a poor decision the guy will continue to cost games!

Chambers is a top bloke, he really is and puts his body on the line, his passion for the club is admirable and i like him for all those qualities, just not as a footballer!

Whats the plan for next season, will it mean him keeping the wolf out of the starting line up? The wolf is right footed and we really want a balanced defence and we have been there before with 2 right footers!

Just when i was beginning to feel confident about next season, this puts a damper on things for me!

I can only see his leadership qualities being used more off the field than on it.
