Chambers Signs New Deal
Friday, 15th Mar 2019 20:42

Town skipper Luke Chambers has signed a new two-year deal with the Blues. The 33-year-old’s current contract was due to end in the summer, although Town had an option for a further season.

“Obviously I’m delighted to be a part of the club’s future for another two years,” said Chambers, who has made 313 starts and one sub appearance, scoring 15 goals, since joining Town in the summer of 2012 after leaving tomorrow's opponents Nottingham Forest.

“I’ve made no secret of the fact that as long as I can play, I want to be here - and maybe beyond that as well.

“I have spoken to [owner] Marcus [Evans] regularly over the last month or so and the manager has shown his support for me and it’s good to get things sorted, for my family as well.

“I’m 33 but to me that is just a number. I feel as fit as I have ever done. I want to play every game here over the next two years. I want to play beyond that.

“I’ve got close on 700 appearances in my career and I want to get to 800 and more. Nothing will drive me on more than to play my part in making a success of this team over the next two years.

“I’m proud to play for this club. I’m proud to be skipper. The club has been a massive part of my career and I want to leave here and people can look back and say, ‘Yeah, he was a good guy to have here’.”

NLTF... we are bottom of the championship and he is a contributor to that fact!

Going into the cup game with Stanley as the favourites and losing to them not just losing but being outplayed, that was embarrassing!

Being bottom and we could go down with an embarrassing points tally with Norwich going up, thats embarrassing! People having an opinion is not!

Short memories, this season has been a season of embarrassment.

People accepting the rubbish we have endured is a big part of why we are where we are !

I am going today, Chambers will be pumped up as he always is, but that wont stop the mistakes or his hoofing!

So you think that by having Chambers at Ipswich next season will not be a positive.
With all he does for the club and youngsters I find this amazing, I think his experience will be invaluable next season, not saying he should play every game m but to have around the club will be massive

Robson's Wark. I get what you're saying, but the point I am trying to make is he's been a good servant to the club and the way he puts his body on the line, unlike the sick notes we have means something. Sure he's had an indifferent season for us, but other than Pennington show me someone who hasn't. The club means something to him and I will always support any player who cares about ITFC over someone who comes in, takes their money but doesn't care.

I agree having him around the club is not a bad thing, but he will play every game, he is captain and will be first name on team sheet!

This is not a move forward for me!

Dissboy, yes Chambers is part of the reason we are where we are this season, but so is Bart, Knudsen, and everyone else who has pulled on a shirt this season. No one has covered themselves in glory. I don't include the youngsters in this, all senior players have made mistakes, but with all the players that wanted out last summer it was always going to be a difficult season

For all those having a pop at this decision please engage your brain.
I accept he has not been the beat player over the last few seasons, however any team and business needs a leader, someone that stands up to be counted and takes responsibility. Additionally he I believe delivers for the team above his own needs. Clearly the youngsters look up to him and want him to stay. Clearly every Manager at this and his previous club see him as a leader as the have always picked him to play and as captain.
Thanks Luke for leading our team, your loyalty and commitment and giving 100%.
Ignore the negatives and believe in the majority that appreciate your strengths.

I don't think he'll play every week next season, I think he'll become more of a squad player, Woolfenden will hopefully become a regular and maybe Nsiala or Ndaba will become more involved too. I think we should all go into next season with a clear mind, enjoy it and if we're challenging for promotion we won't mind who's playing

Great news all round. We need his experience and man management skills next year. Yes, he is past his best and makes mistakes but we're going to be in League 1, so we shouldn't get punished as much. I think well see him playing less and less in the team over the next 2 years, slowly being groomed as a coach/manager. We need his passion and experience whilst the youngsters bed in, so this makes total 'business' sense (no I'm not ME in disguise). You've earned it Chambo, well done.

never_lose_the_faith you're embarrassed to be an Ipswich Town fan? Well then please go and support someone else then. Either your with the team and club or you aren't. I'm embarrassed to have fans like this at this club!

Paul Lambert wants him to stay, Mick Mills thinks he should stay.....opinions of people that I trust. Enough said.

RegencyBlue added 08:51 - Mar 16
Not sure about this personally but Lambert presumably wanted Chambers re-signed so fair enough.

For those of you slagging off Chambers, what makes you think you know more than Lambert. Goalkeeper and full back errors and lack of goals are the reason we're on the bottom.

He'll be a perfect foil for the young guys, as he is a natural leader. This is excellent news. You have to have some experience in the team. As for some of you criticising Skuse too. UNBELIEVABLE!!!!!

Gazelle good points, but this thread is about chambers! And yes mistakes have been common by everyone all over the pitch just not Chambers but as i say this thread is about Chambers. And IMO to move forward the mistakes have to be reduced drastically!!!

@ sneaky-king
I'm not embarrassed by the club or players by any means, just some of our supporters. You saying I don't support the club, but i am the one who is supporting Chambers and the clubs decisions.

Its's ok Ipswich Town fans don't care how you play, have you heard how good he is at organizing dinner for him and his Premier class mate....

Let's hope that yard of pace he has lost won't notice when we are in division one.

skankerman added 09:13 - Mar 16
Very loyal professional which lacks in today's game.

Ipswich through and through will be a great guy to have around the club especially next season when we bed in many young players.

This will also mean Skuse will stay, another in the same mould

Having the worse cdm in the whole football league was a leading factor. Please don't offer him new contract, going to be hard enough to get through one more season of him, although I get the feeling PL doesn't rate him just hope he doesn't listen to the fans who rate players on personality and not performances.
