Downes Signs New Deal Friday, 29th Mar 2019 18:55 Blues midfielder Flynn Downes has signed a new contract which runs to June 2022 with the club having an option for an additional season. The 20-year-old’s previous deal was due to end in the summer of 2020, again with the club having an option for an additional year. “I’m pleased for Flynn,” manager Paul Lambert told the club site. “He’s another young player who has done great for us. “I’ve got a lot of time for him. He’s a good footballer; he’s got a great work ethic. Physically, he’s strong and getting stronger. “He’s only 20 and he will make mistakes. That’s part of it but he’s got a great chance of having a really good career in the game.” Downes paid tribute to the Blues’ youth set-up: “I think it says a lot about the academy here, the staff that so many of us have got into the first-team squad and been given new contracts. “All the coaches here, like Bryan [Klug], Hoggy [Chris Hogg], Lee [O’Neill], Alan Lee and all of them. I could name so many more, they have all helped me so much. “The manager has been great for me as well. He has been there and played at the highest level and we all take on board what he says. “It’s been a decent year for me personally. I have played a lot of games so that is pleasing. That is all I can ask for but obviously we are all really disappointed to be where we are in the table.”
