Town Spend £790,210 on Agents' Fees
Friday, 5th Apr 2019 12:50

Town spent £790,210 on agents’ fees between February 1st 2018 and January 31st this year.

Of the other clubs in the Championship, only Wigan, Bolton, Blackburn, Millwall and Rotherham spent less on what are now officially known as intermediaries.

The £790,210 covers 20 transactions, the signings, both permanent additions and loans, made by Paul Hurst last summer and Paul Lambert in January, as well as new contracts for players already at the club, and also the exit of Tommy Smith to the Colorado Rapids in February last year.

The figure is significantly up on the Blues' spending in the previous year when only £241,969 was paid out to intermediaries. A year prior to that Town spent £303,978.

The FA has been required to publish clubs' spending on intermediaries by FIFA regulations since April 2015.

A few things strike me about this:

1) Why did we need to pay an agent for Tommy Smith's departure? I guess because he needed to negotiate the end of his contract (I think he was still under contract) but still...
2) Why do we have to pay agents when existing players receive new contracts? Shouldn't the player pay their agent for this (that's a rhetorical question...)?
3) Just look at the number of clubs that have paid more to agents than we have paid in transfer fees. Amazing just how uneven the playing field is in the Championship.

In many ways I'm glad we were at the lower end of the scale though, even if that is a reflection on limited transfer spend. It at least means we're not allowing vast sums of money to exit the game (albeit £790k is pretty vast).

I agree Borge - Players should have to pay Agents fees. Otherwise Agents should just be called scouts.
Given the amount of dodgy dealings in football I can only imagine that's why Agents are allowed to claim any money from clubs - some form of underhand dealings and money laundering most likely

Unfathomable. You may as well say I'm glad we're going down! Town, Bolton, Rotherham etc can anyone see a correlation?! All fighting relegation or relegated due to underfunding. Keep worshipping Evans though some of you!! 😂

It would cost the club more if the player paid all of the agent fees!

Unfathomable like the size of your brain Bluearmy_81...?

You misinterpret what I said. I said "in many ways" which clearly suggests not in every way. I would much rather we were spending millions more on transfer fees, but I am glad we're not fuelling what is a parasitic industry.

Anyone with any sense would surely rather we spent more buying players - it's pretty stupid to suggest otherwise and clearly I wasn't.
