Lambert: We Never Deserved to Take Anything From the Game
Wednesday, 10th Apr 2019 22:33

Town boss Paul Lambert admitted his side never deserved to take anything from their 2-0 defeat at Brentford believing the first half was the worst 45 minutes since he took charge.

Lambert praised midfielder Flynn Downes for the way he recovered from the error which led to the Bees’ second goal.

Asked about the positives he could take from the match, the Blues manager said: “I think Flynn Downes recovering from his slip was major for him. OK, he made the mistake for the second goal but the great thing about it was that he kept wanting to take the ball which is great for him.

“It’s great for his development as a player as well. It won’t be his first mistake and it certainly won’t be his last.

“All credit to him, I thought he did really well, Flynn, so that was a big positive. As I said before, we’re a young team.

“But we never deserved to take anything from the game. The big turning point was when Collin hit the post when everybody thought it was going in.

“That might have changed the course of the game, I don’t know. But we were up against a good side, but we were very young. There are a lot of good things at the club, good players that we’ve got.”

After Quaner hit the post the home side immediately went up the other end and took the lead via Neal Maupay. Did that minute sum up Town’s season? “Probably, he did everything right, it was a great pass by Andre and he went through and he did everything right, he chipped the goalkeeper. I thought it was going in and then it hit the post.

“And then they went up the park and scored. But I think it was probably the worst 45 minutes since I’ve at the club because we’ve been at a pretty consistent level. We’ve been playing really, really well without getting the breaks at times.

“It’s all about developing the young players and they will take knocks in their careers it’s how they come back from it, so I can’t be too harsh on them.

“As I said, in the first half, I don’t think we did enough, Judge had a good chance at 2-0, normally he’d hit the target, that never happened, so you know it’s not your night.”

A reminder that the youngsters need a bit of experience around them? “They will need that. You can’t stress enough the development in games like that, it’s going to really help them because they’ll know what it entails and what it involves.

“it might not feel it to them at the minute, but they will, 100 per cent they’ll learn from it and they’ll get better and better at it and they’ll become a really good side, I’ve got no doubt on that whatsoever, we’ll become a really good side.

“It’s just that little finish touch, as I always say. As I say, we’ve got a few players missing at the minute as well, a few experienced players missing. But I can’t have any qualms about the result, we never did enough.”

Midfielder Cole Skuse was among a number of senior players absent. “Skusey had a bit of fluid in his knee from Saturday,” Lambert added. “It was getting better, hopefully he’s OK for Saturday.

“Gwion Edwards, I don’t know, maybe, it’s his groin. Jon Nolan, maybe. Will Keane maybe. Collins maybe. It’s all maybes at the moment with the guys. We’ll see how they are.”

"The Blues finished with a midfield featuring Downes, Andre Dozzell, Tristan Nydam and Idris El Mizouni, which Lambert saw as another positive to be taken from what overall was another disappointing evening.

“It’s great, and they never disgraced themselves,” he said. “In the second half, we never capitulated.

“They’re a good side, have more experience than us, but we never laid down in the second half, we kept on going, kept on going.

“That’s the future of the club and it’s in a good place. Those kids will get better without a doubt.”

Brentford head coach Thomas Frank felt it was a professional performance from his team.

"A little more so in the first half," he reflected. "We played quickly, one and two touches trying to move them side to side. And we were running a lot, really putting in a lot of intensity into the game.

"And I like that we tried to play more in behind them like we sometimes do. It was not spot on, but that opened gaps in between them.

"And we got more and more space and opportunities throughout the first half, and could have scored maybe one more. I know they hit the post but that was the only situation they had.

"I know the goal maybe changed the momentum and all that, but at the end of the day we did well enough to be 2-0 up at half-time.

"Second half, it’s professional. We just want more. I’m pleased that we didn’t give anything away, and in open play, situations where we should defend well, we didn’t give anything."

Yes Paul....isn't it about time to change captaincy??
Now 14 points from safety, it's a utter shambles.
My prediction of that being 20 points come the full time whistle V Leeds, is disastrous for this club.
And will take years to recover from....if ever.

“That might have changed the course of the game, I don't know. - No it wouldn't Paul, Brentford would have upped the tempo if we went ahead, they always looked the better side, far better passing and moving as a unit. The last 20 minutes or so after Benrhama and Maupay were subbed they just strolled through the game, clutching at straws their mate! On decent chances alone it probably should have been 5-2.

Well Paul, you've completely failed to address the two problem areas at this club of team selection and formation. Start picking players on ability rather than perceived experience and start giving us a chance to score in games by naming two strikers.

But who goat_man? It's all very well play 2 up front but who would drop out? Our only decent play came from the midfield but there was no end product. Quanner was insignificant, Jackson even more so when he came on, Harrison just doesn't cut it. Let's face it, we haven't had a forward who looks like scoring since Freddie got injured.

Working very hard to find positives from the performance tonight Mr Lambert. I don't think League 1 teams will be quaking in their boots.

Tebbo28, was about to write the same then read your post! We can't field 1 good striker so where do we get 2 from?! "Quaner did everything right"......except score an absolute sitter!

Same old nonsense...it's all going to be really, really good, isn't it PR Paul?

No Skuse and its our worst performance under Lambert. I think he gets a bit too much criticism sometimes.

Tonight should be nothing to do with the players, the manager or the owner. Tonight the only thing being spoken about should be the 1,600 town fans that didn't stop singing regardless of what was happening on the pitch.

Unbelievable support.

Really think we should be trying two up front for a couple of games now. There's a player in there with regards to Jackson, but he plays better off another striker and is not a solo striker. Sunset ? I personally would okay him any more this season now. If fit , I'd be playing Harrison : Jackson together or Keane: Jackson.

Felt so sorry for Downes , he slipped over on the well watered grass , just as the team had committed to getting forward. That second goal killed us really.

Just want the season over now tbh so Lambert can sort out the current squad ( ship out the dead wood and injured / sick notes) and get in a proper target man for next season.

I see absolutely no benefit in still playing loan players and 1 up front, but still we persist?

Paul this was a very inept performance with very little commitment from anybody. We the supporters who travelled in numbers last night were badly let down.It took me four hours to get back to Southend last night due to accidents and to say I was fed up is an understatement.
I just hope the lads turn up on Saturday. I really was unimpressed with that performance and I'm sure there were many other travelling supporters in the same mood.

Skuse instead of Chalobah would have helped the defence, and two up front. PL it will be over on Saturday when we lose to Birmingham at home unless you put out 11 town players on the pitch and play 4.4.2. Tell them to give it all they got because they are playing for their futures either here or somewhere else.

Oh how we laughed some years ago when Evans took over the club with all his £millions, and at the same time Norwich faced relegation to the 3rd tier under the inept management of Bryan Gunn. Fast forward to now, and there is only one person responsible for our club's sad decline. Back in 1978 Delia was wearing blue and white when we went to Wembley and frankly I wish she had continued supporting ITFC as I look enviously up the A140 to Norwich.

So what. We are down, I think motivation is going to be a problem these few last games. Maybe we will see a reaction on Saturday, in a positive way. I am a big fan of Downes, but I think he has faded a bit this season. We need this season to be over and start again. We need to invest in key players in our back line and a couple of good, promising strikers. Whatever happens, Ipswich til I die!

What's happened to the diamond formation??

We played the best all season with that system.

We should have had 2 up top since January, knowing we struggled to score goals. Once again it all goes back to us wanting to play a defensive midfielder as our defence always need protecting.
As well as a decent striker we also need a comanding midfielder (we have needed one since Holland) someone who will demand the ball, link play and make things happen.
Nolan is probably the closest we have to this at present.

People keep going on about 2 upfront as though it magically means you score more goals. However Norwich, Leeds & Villa all play one upfront & score plenty of goals. It's not the formation that is necessarily the issue but the players playing it. Currently we don't have the fit personnel to play 2 upfront IMHO. I'm sure Lambert will look to change this over the closed season but 2 upfront doesn't guarantee success or make winning more likely

Chambers lack of mobility & being unable to read a game was shown up last night. He didn't stand a chance against speedy attackers
Waste of time offering Collins a contract if it's play one miss one. And as for Keene we need strikers on the pitch not in the stand
