McCarthy: I Hope Fans That Hounded Me Out Enjoy the Sexy Football in League One
Wednesday, 24th Apr 2019 18:42

Former boss Mick McCarthy says he is sad the Blues have been relegated but in a spiky riposte to his detractors hopes that the fans that he says hounded him out "enjoy watching the sexy football in the first division”.

McCarthy, 60, left Portman Road a year ago this month, his relationship with fans having deteriorated markedly during the final two years of his five and a half at the club, culminating in a fractious afternoon at Brentford when he was advised by police to leave Griffin Park via a back exit.

“I was doing a good job there,” McCarthy, now back in charge of the Republic of Ireland, told Balls.ie when asked about Town’s drop into League One.

“My job is to win games and [to] stay in that league was my remit, and that's what I continued to do.

“I'm sad that they've gone down. Some of the lads are taking huge cuts in wages who were with me and who were brilliant for me.

“The staff, I've no doubt people will be losing their jobs because of it so that's going to be sad. It's a great club and pretty much most of their fans were brilliant with me.

"The ones that hounded me out, I hope they enjoy watching the sexy football in the first division [sic].”

The truth hurts and Mick is spot on. The Mick our brigade are as responsible for our relegation as Hurst, Evans and the players. There is no doubt we would have been top half at least this season under McCarthy. Was the football great? Nope, but if her had money it would have been. He was pragmatic and knew with the budget results were needed more than style. I like lambert but prettier football hasn't brought points. There is a lot of denial on show here. Idiots

It really is time to grow up! All he is saying in essence is that given the limitations placed on him he did a ‘truly ‘ ( my words ) professional job achieving the objectives with his hands tied behind his back by ridiculous mis management at the Club ( I Milne ,who'd not a clue on football ; and wasn't courageous in any way ) ,and by lack of proper involvement from the owner .When things go Wrong, anywhere, look first to the top : ME failed on more than one score, but seemed improperly or simply badly advised .
The verbal nonsense voiced, viciously and regularly by so called'supporters ‘ should have been quickly and publicly condemned by any MD worth his salt AND it was not ( shame on all involved !)
As a result we lost a very clever, intelligent man who , in the words of Roger Finbow , created a very happy atmosphere and bonhomie within the building !
Let's now accept it hurt MM and was what it was ,and a stain on our normal standards !
Move forward !
He has a point !!

I wasn't a mick outer, but this is lame. Makes him look like a bit of a sad loser.

The sad thing about this story is his remit was to stay in the division. No ambition for promotion from above. That's not what football is about surely 😢

Monkey blue... Barts heroics kept us up, this season Bart has not been that same keeper, so i doubt he would have had us flying high at all!

Like in Hollywood Space movies sometimes you have to go further away to propel yourself forwards (orbiting a planet to slingshot you forwards quicker) and hopefully going down to league one we might* build some momentum and new found confidence...with McCarthy we weren't going anywhere fast and it was all becoming a tad tedious as Ireland fans will find out. Enough's enough Mick...get on with what you're doing.

* straw clutching but stranger things have happened in football, let's follow Man City, Southampton and those up the road that have achieved such feats.

@Bighibbs - omg if you think the place will be NEARLY FULL NEXT YEAR your in for a surprise, get real stadiums gonna be half empty.
@dolphinblue and anyone else who says they are looking forward to sexy football in league 1, and as for regency blue saying league 1 football is preferable words fail me, can anyone honestly say the football this season is better than anything our 2 managers have given us - for me no.
In the he had no time for the fans because a minority were ABSOLUTELY DISGUSTING to him culminating in a manager being asked to leave a football stadium out the back door because of his own fans.
His remit was to keep us in this division and still line pockets of ME, which he did on league 2 budget.
OH AND BY THE WAY I WAS ALL FOR CHANGE AT THE END OF HIS TENURE, BUT JUST DID NOT HURL ABUSE LIKE A FEW

Gcon and Evansblue, spot on. I can draw similarities between MM and Chris Hughton. When at Norwich fans hated his negative style, but his remit was to keep them in the prem. He was ultimately hounded out and ended up with Brighton where his remit and resource were more positive, resulting in free flowing and free scoring football, ultimately resulting in promotion. MM did well for us with what he was given to work with. Who knows what he could have done with the backing that Keane and Jewell had?

Mick loved the club. The staff and players liked him. The atmosphere within the club was very good and it seems it was a nice place to work with Mick as the boss.
If any of you have ever lost a great job in a really good company because of a personality clash (which I have) then I say you have every right to be bitter (which I still am).
But we've all moved on haven't we?

Never had a problem with McCarthys gob, certainly more entertaining than his brand of anti football that's for sure. No guarantees he'd of kept us up this season, we were well on the slide last season, in fact if it weren't for them freakish 5 wins on the bounce at the start of the season when injuries forced him to be more adventurous, it could have been very different last time around.

He's just having a little snigger at our plight. You can't really blame him. What's the point in getting wound up? Move on.

How many season tickets would we be selling for the coming season if he was still with us?I l think we all know the answer to that one, we would have just endured another mind numbingly boring season of anti football and finished around 15th in the championship. I for one am glad he has gone and will be renewing for another season something I would not have done were he still in charge!

MM's comment after his game back in charge of Republic of Ireland when they beat Gibraltar (ranked 194 in the world) 1-0

“I pretty much hated every minute of that. I knew what that it was going to be like and it didn't disappoint. What a horrible game, but a great three points.I've played these games before and I hated every minute of it, underdogs, nothing to lose, everything to gain and I'm delighted that we're out of it with a 1-0 win.”

Even Mick can't stand watching his teams play - Enough said!

Incredible isn't it?! One year on and an article that mentions MM gets more reaction in 1 hour than positive news on season ticket sales gets in 24hrs!!

Let's be fair. Those lads have 100% earned those pay cuts!!

I'm still hoping we can lose a very clever, intelligent man called Chambers!

Such a sad individual and without a doubt do not miss his rude ignorant stubbornness. Did a good job in difficult circumstances but when you tell your own supporters to f£&k off when you equalise at Carrot Road you lose all respect and support. Dead man walking from that day. We 100% don't miss you or your football ethos and as for the man himself he should get on with his job and stop trying to be a comedian because he's about as funny as cold sick.

Why should he even me mentioned on here ?????? - he's still as boring as his Football.

If he'd stayed most of us would still be asleep in the Stands - permanently hypnotised.

Remember that when he came here to replace Jewell we were in danger of relegation.

He saved us from that and took us to the play offs; almost made it to the promised land.

Things went wrong after that; I shall never forget or forgive the Lincoln debacle. He stayed too long. We replaced him badly. We are still paying the price.

Also, ME and others in the management team need to accept responsibility.
