McCarthy: I Hope Fans That Hounded Me Out Enjoy the Sexy Football in League One
Wednesday, 24th Apr 2019 18:42

Former boss Mick McCarthy says he is sad the Blues have been relegated but in a spiky riposte to his detractors hopes that the fans that he says hounded him out "enjoy watching the sexy football in the first division”.

McCarthy, 60, left Portman Road a year ago this month, his relationship with fans having deteriorated markedly during the final two years of his five and a half at the club, culminating in a fractious afternoon at Brentford when he was advised by police to leave Griffin Park via a back exit.

“I was doing a good job there,” McCarthy, now back in charge of the Republic of Ireland, told Balls.ie when asked about Town’s drop into League One.

“My job is to win games and [to] stay in that league was my remit, and that's what I continued to do.

“I'm sad that they've gone down. Some of the lads are taking huge cuts in wages who were with me and who were brilliant for me.

“The staff, I've no doubt people will be losing their jobs because of it so that's going to be sad. It's a great club and pretty much most of their fans were brilliant with me.

"The ones that hounded me out, I hope they enjoy watching the sexy football in the first division [sic].”

He lost the best job he could have expected to have at the time - by being pig headed, disrespectful of fans (who ultimately were his paymasters !) and boring everyone who knows the game to sleep.

Bitter and twisted he is for sure, for losing that job.

You've gone McCarthy (where are all those Clubs that wanted you ?) - may I suggest that if your follows were still following you - they STILL wouldn't have been entertained, and are now most certainly permanently hypnotised.

Not exactly set the Football world alight since leaving - have you ?

Why he should command such attention now, is beyond me - but he did p#ss many people off, and feelings still run high in his direction for disrespect.

Let's hope this is the end of the Saga - he'll be an ITFC leg - end forever - NOT legend.

So poor old McCarthy, who was doing such a good job here, was unfairly hounded out by a minority of fans. What a load of tosh.

He did save us from relegation in his first season and also did well in his second season, but after that the standard of football and results got worse and worse and he became more and more antagonistic towards any fans that dared to criticise him. He has never been able to accept criticism, despite his frequent claims that he doesn't worry what anyone says about him. He may have been popular with the players (his 'proper blokes anyway) and the support staff but a good manager takes on board the values of the club and tries to keep the fans happy. McCarthy never did this. He always gave the impression that he believed that he was bigger than the club and that anyone who questioned him was an ungrateful idiot. Consequently, he became more and more belligerent and crossed the line when he directed an F. Off Town fans at Carrow Road. It was therefore his tactics and behaviour which necessitated his departure. The comments he has made about us since show that in addition to being arrogant and antagonistic he has no class or humility. Good riddance.

The belief seems to be that with MM in charge the club would always keep its Championship status, albeit playing hoof ball and negative tactics. It's MM main argument, play my way or go down. But I believe the writing was already on the wall, we were steadily getting worse. The team escaped relegation in the 2016/17 season by just 4 points. Whilst last season looked comfortable with 60 points, this was masked by four straight wins at the start of the season.

ME would still have insisted that the likes of Waghorn and McGoldrick were to be sold this season. Perhaps MM would have gained more points this season but I suspect that it would have been a close call.

The FO moment at Norwich was the final straw for me. I am glad he is gone. At best next season would have been fighting for survival. I hope that this seasons relegation has been a wake up call for ME. His non communication between the club and the supporters only served to divide the supporters and MM even more.

ME, your apology for the season was welcome. Even if it was a PR statement written several weeks before. Please communicate more with the fans and not just at ST sales time.

Two thoughts here.

1. This is like the ex who can't get over you and keeps taking cheap shots years down the road. Getting over it Mick. Move on. We have.

2. That's a pretty crappy shot to take at league one in general.

The man will continually haunt this club while his 2(no's 4 & 8) proper blokes remain they have whilst being the best paid in his tenure(and now he's gone still stuck with them!!) cost this club dearly by underperforming and drawing what we fans can only dream of each week, time to get rid Mr Lambert that is if you have the power to do so which I very much doubt as the owner loves a creep that is why the arrogant MM lasted so long until the fans who pay these ineffective excuses made their voices heard!! this great club of ours will only thrive again when his deadwood is removed.

Ah look, he did a job on a budget but it was leading to long term decline of the club, we had to twist, stick was no longer an option.

Evans might've given him more, but promotion with Mick would've seen us destroyed week in week out in the Prem, the game has moved on massively and never once did we play 'well' with Mick at the helm. It was hit and hope force-mistake-football.

If you want Mick indictment it's that his focus was on the the pitch, he fell out with the fans, didn't care about the community nearly as much as Lambert already does, and played a type of football that few if any club chairman want.

Reading these comments if it wasn't on the TWTD webb site where reality is always in short supply i would of thought that posters where commenting on a totally different article.
A journalist asks him a question to which he makes an honest reply no way is he criticising the club or the fans just the few hundred mainly frequenters of TWTD news site who actually did get what they wished for.

This "he was asked a question" stuff is crap and you all know it. It is a journalist's job to answer the question. Mick, as with all people asked a question, COULD REFUSE TO ANSWER IT. But Mick does not so refuse. So screw him. Just because you have the right to do something doesn't mean it's the right thing to do.

And Mick, sexy football like Lincoln plays kicked your butt. They will be in League One next season too. So perhaps you might want to shut the hell up.

100% agree therein61. No promotion party anytime soon with the 2 right proper blokes...blokes of all blokes running the show.

Thanks Mick for leaving us with the total shower of s##t. That is captain calamity and his best buddy, premiership class and right good bloke Skuse.

And thanks Mick for ruining the career of top bloke Dougie, he weren't a bad player until you coached him. And thanks for advising our top Saxon bloke Jonas to leave...not good enough for the championship or L1. Thinks he's better and bigger than the club, but it's only the 2 proper blokes who can get away with that kind of stuff.

he never gave the fans any respect and even now is continuing to show his lack of class in that direction. No wonder they turned on him (although a few did go too far).Everywhere he goes he shows that apart from with the players themselves he's actually a really poor man manager

McCarthy can not help displaying his arrogance, low IQ and lack of gratitude. Just a man who got a lucky break involved in football yet feels entitled to tell the world repeatedly what a great football manager he is. It was not the supporters that got Ipswich relegated Mick. Ok, you managed to squeeze a bit of life out of some poor footballers but ultimately failed in bringing "sexy" football to Ipswich. MANY of us watched your poor football and early cup exits. MOST of the fans were glad you left. Enjoy the lifestyle and good luck you have Mick because there are plenty of starving people out there in the big wide world. It is not very clever to try and insult your former supporters with a cheap jibe . The same supporters who paid your inflated wages and bolstered your inflated ego.

I agree that it was time for the club to move on, but I never took part in the abuse that was metered out to MM towards the end, no-one, however bad they are, deserves such treatment.

Having met and talked to him on a number of occasions he always came across as a sincere person who knew the limitations that he was working under and ultimately did his best.

However, this latest comment has dropped him down in my estimation. A gentleman would have said nothing or just a polite comment like ....I wish them all the best...... and just left it.

A bit like Ole at Man U, he should have been given a short contract and left after saving us from relegation. Having not done that the ME allowed his legacy to be:
- a lost generation of young supporters
- a lost generation of youth players not given a chance due to spaces filled with the likes of Douglas and soooo many loan players
- disconnected fan base
- Club disconnected from community

And NOW he throws ME under the bus, Sure ME deserves it but what a poor quality human being MM really is, but then even my lad knew that when he was sworn at by him at Carrot Road. How could he stay after that still bewilders me but says a lot about ME too.

Those who agree with MM on here are missing the point about his remarks - a true professional with class simply wouldn't make them at all, let alone a year on after a disappointing relegation. Will Hurst do the same? He could, but I doubt it. It tells you everything that, while MM may possibly have kept us up this season, most of us are still glad he went - that is something he should feel personally ashamed about. Better to fail and be rid of him.
