McCarthy: Town Players Facing Pay Cuts of 50 or 60 Per Cent
Sunday, 28th Apr 2019 09:59

Former Town boss Mick McCarthy has revealed that some Blues players will be taking pay cuts of 50 or 60 per cent in League One.

Republic of Ireland boss McCarthy met with the Irish media earlier in the week, with some quotes relating to Town appearing on Wednesday, and speaking to journalists for the Sunday papers was asked further about the Blues' relegation.

“I feel desperately sad for the players,” he said. “Some are taking big, big pay cuts, 50 or 60 per cent going down, so I’m hearing.

“They were great those lads, the lads who played for me were fantastic. The staff, the club itself.

“But I have to honest, some of them who hounded me out for the last 18 months, I hope they enjoy their sexy football in League One.”

That Town's players were facing significant pay cuts was already known but with their precise extent not confirmed.

The Blues are facing what they expect to be a £9 million drop in income in League One with media, commercial and gate money all set to be down.

McCarthy also said that Blues loanee Will Keane’s qualification for Ireland has now been sorted, as far as he is aware: “I believe so, he’s playing now, I’m hoping he’s got his passport, I think he has.”

Keane, who suffered what's thought to be a recurrence of his hamstring injury at Sheffield United yesterday, qualifies for Ireland through his father.

The ex-Blues manager also revealed that 17-year-old Stoke City central defender Nathan Collins, who has broken into the Potters’ first team in the last three games, spent time training with Town during pre-season before moving to the Staffordshire club from Dublin side Cherry Orchard in 2017.

“Nathan Collins is playing for Stoke, he’s got in the team,” McCarthy said when asked about young Irish players who could come into his thoughts for the June internationals. “We looked at him with Ipswich up in Carton House.

“We didn’t sign him, probably for financial reasons, he’s now at Stoke. He’s now in the first team.”

50-60%?

If they are not happy with this I suggest they find employment elsewhere then.

Are Arsenal still planning to build their team around Dozzell next season?

Why does McCarthy feel compelled to keep making comments about his former club ?

As far as I'm concerned any players on the staff at Ipswich who are not happy with their salaries going forward into next season can leave as soon as they like.

Is this tvvat club spokesperson or something? Naff off Mick you insufferable old troll.

And I am glad players are taking pay cuts, no less than they deserve after their abysmal performances this year

I know he's being asked the questions, but it's not really fair to be divulging personal (and presumably confidential) information like this. Let alone whether it's reasonable to keep displaying such bitterness about his former club.

Quite right. Are any of us rewarded for failure in out jobs? Well, perhaps only a football manager!! In addition, a gun wasn't held to their heads to sign their contracts. They willingly signed them and they also knew the consequences if they didn't deliver. If they don't like it MM, they know where the door is!

So they should take a pay cut after their awful performances that we have paid good money to endure over this dreadful season. As for you McCarthy, you can p1ss of back into the home you have just climbed out of, it was not all about lack of finance hindering your job at Portman road, it was the awful boring football and hoofball the majority of supporters had head enough of and your attitude towards them. Look at Sheffield United 8th lowest budget in the division, now going up having played attractive (sexy) football along the way, just shows what a good manager can achieve in the championship.

Believe this is from the same interview he gave earlier in the week (about sexy football in league One)?...I like the phrase he uses' I feel desperately sorry for the lads' but that's what happens if you get rid of the quality you had - notice he says absolutely nothing about Evans though where the finger of blame should be pointed and maybe it's because he was Micks £1M a season paymaster general.

To be fair he was only answering questions from the press, should he have answered them? No of course he shouldn't, it's no longer his business and he should know better. He's just a loudmouth, who should stick to running Ireland.

It's ok if you have a special contract like Chambos.
He doesn't have to concern himself with being dropped or taking pay cuts like everyone else.

Obviously people are finding fault with MM. I heard his sympathy for players who are getting pay cut. Players close to him must have told him so. He will always be asked questions about IPSWICH... If he says no comments, he will still be mentioned as being negative...

I have to agree he is only answering questions he has been asked and he is obviously still in contact with a few of his mates but he should really hold back on making comments about players wage cuts. That is know longer his problem.!

We are a joke

Food for thought

Bolton players are not even being paid and they still have 4 more wins than us

Just shows how little they care

Why these interviews are printed on this site is a mystery, I should think most fans are no longer interested in what MM thinks or says about this club.

Bloke needs to move on, but so does TWTD! Dont want to see another McCarthy article, that ship has sailed and we all need to live on and prepare for the future

Lightningboy added 11:23 - Apr 28
It's quite simple then - if they all want a 50 to 60% pay increase they all need to pull their fingers out & up their games next season and get back into the championship at the first time of asking.

I can't see them being up to that though from what i've seen.

Northstandveteran added 11:26 - Apr 28
These interviews are printed because they provoke an instant response Bomber.

What other story gets 22 posts in just over an hour.

Yes Timmy, same interview.

There will probably be more stories to come from this should there be a no news day.

Boohoo now they are only on 3/6k a week, how will they survive on 150k-300k a year, must be a real struggle and to play football for a living.

If you would like to donate £2 a week for these poor souls, some people struggle month to month, no one cares about their wages, they are already set for life
