McCarthy: Town Players Facing Pay Cuts of 50 or 60 Per Cent
Sunday, 28th Apr 2019 09:59

Former Town boss Mick McCarthy has revealed that some Blues players will be taking pay cuts of 50 or 60 per cent in League One.

Republic of Ireland boss McCarthy met with the Irish media earlier in the week, with some quotes relating to Town appearing on Wednesday, and speaking to journalists for the Sunday papers was asked further about the Blues' relegation.

“I feel desperately sad for the players,” he said. “Some are taking big, big pay cuts, 50 or 60 per cent going down, so I’m hearing.

“They were great those lads, the lads who played for me were fantastic. The staff, the club itself.

“But I have to honest, some of them who hounded me out for the last 18 months, I hope they enjoy their sexy football in League One.”

That Town's players were facing significant pay cuts was already known but with their precise extent not confirmed.

The Blues are facing what they expect to be a £9 million drop in income in League One with media, commercial and gate money all set to be down.

McCarthy also said that Blues loanee Will Keane’s qualification for Ireland has now been sorted, as far as he is aware: “I believe so, he’s playing now, I’m hoping he’s got his passport, I think he has.”

Keane, who suffered what's thought to be a recurrence of his hamstring injury at Sheffield United yesterday, qualifies for Ireland through his father.

The ex-Blues manager also revealed that 17-year-old Stoke City central defender Nathan Collins, who has broken into the Potters’ first team in the last three games, spent time training with Town during pre-season before moving to the Staffordshire club from Dublin side Cherry Orchard in 2017.

“Nathan Collins is playing for Stoke, he’s got in the team,” McCarthy said when asked about young Irish players who could come into his thoughts for the June internationals. “We looked at him with Ipswich up in Carton House.

“We didn’t sign him, probably for financial reasons, he’s now at Stoke. He’s now in the first team.”

Agreed Lightening boy. If the cuts are true, which I don't believe, then they all have a great incentive to get promoted next year. COYB

Phil. Can we stop publishing things he says, it's not news, it's not helpful and it gets rational fans irate at MM and his self importance and ego.

He can't resist massaging his massive ego, but he's certainly eroding whatever lingering respect fans may still have for him in the process

ONLY Marcus Evans knows why he stuck with the same poor players from last season and the season before that. We now have a League Two team hoping to be successful in League One.

MM should not be commenting on players wages at his former club. That is a definite no no.
Our players deserve to have their pay cut. No passion whatsoever and they don't seem to care that we are going down as the worst team in championship history with only four wins. Utterly disgraceful. Us fans deserve a lot better. Disgraceful from the top to the bottom.

Are we supposed to feel sorry for them? They haven't deserved the wages they are on this season and have been an absolute embarrassment to our club. I personally hope the majority of them leave.

Another dose of Yorkshire realism , say it how it is !, still doesn't grab the brains of those who it seems want only to find fault ( in this case with MM ) .
It's starting to make the TWTD site a near total misery ,AND yet this purports to be OUR club ; do let's have a look at The here and now and bring realism to looking at our future !

As much as McCarthy is being sarcastic in hoping we enjoy our sexy football in league one next season, I think we actually will. I'm glad we've stopped playing hoofball - even if that is the reason we're relegated. We needed to change. Like they said on skySport, our attendance is actually up this season. That says it all

Wow, saw the article pop up on twitter and couldn't help clicking. I haven't bothered with this place for quite some time now. Amazing how this website / forum is still a hornets nest of moaners and self-taught experts. All the cock-sure “realists” now have what they want but will never admit to being wrong about the MM situation. Where's Blueboy these days? Celebrating Nodge promotion?
This article is being drip fed by TWTD as click bait. You lot keep saying MM should give it a rest and move on? Maybe if you didn't take all your advice from TWTD forums you'd move on too. All the mock-offense that MM might say something to defend his time here. Makes me laugh.
Now back to the real problem (same one as it has been for probably 10 years - clue: it wasn't the manager) we aren't moving forward again until either a). We get a new owner or b). The current owner changes his approach.
Right. I'm away from this again. Makes me laugh out loud that most of you (ST holder or not) consider yourself “supporters” of the club.
