McCarthy: Town Players Facing Pay Cuts of 50 or 60 Per Cent
Sunday, 28th Apr 2019 09:59

Former Town boss Mick McCarthy has revealed that some Blues players will be taking pay cuts of 50 or 60 per cent in League One.

Republic of Ireland boss McCarthy met with the Irish media earlier in the week, with some quotes relating to Town appearing on Wednesday, and speaking to journalists for the Sunday papers was asked further about the Blues' relegation.

“I feel desperately sad for the players,” he said. “Some are taking big, big pay cuts, 50 or 60 per cent going down, so I’m hearing.

“They were great those lads, the lads who played for me were fantastic. The staff, the club itself.

“But I have to honest, some of them who hounded me out for the last 18 months, I hope they enjoy their sexy football in League One.”

That Town's players were facing significant pay cuts was already known but with their precise extent not confirmed.

The Blues are facing what they expect to be a £9 million drop in income in League One with media, commercial and gate money all set to be down.

McCarthy also said that Blues loanee Will Keane’s qualification for Ireland has now been sorted, as far as he is aware: “I believe so, he’s playing now, I’m hoping he’s got his passport, I think he has.”

Keane, who suffered what's thought to be a recurrence of his hamstring injury at Sheffield United yesterday, qualifies for Ireland through his father.

The ex-Blues manager also revealed that 17-year-old Stoke City central defender Nathan Collins, who has broken into the Potters’ first team in the last three games, spent time training with Town during pre-season before moving to the Staffordshire club from Dublin side Cherry Orchard in 2017.

“Nathan Collins is playing for Stoke, he’s got in the team,” McCarthy said when asked about young Irish players who could come into his thoughts for the June internationals. “We looked at him with Ipswich up in Carton House.

“We didn’t sign him, probably for financial reasons, he’s now at Stoke. He’s now in the first team.”

Can't see what the continued fascination in him is, his managerial record is pants. He has one of the worst ever managerial records in the Premier League, he simply wasn't good enough for the highest level. I did certainly enjoy watching the Irish reaching the quarter finals though when Matt Holland was in the team. That was his finest hour no doubt about it. But he's not achieved anything notable in football for a long time. I think football has moved on and he's behind the times. He could still probably do a reasonable job given the chance I think but he's never likely to set the world alight. I did like some of his loan signings though such as Ryan Fraser and Tom Lawrence to be fair.

While Mick's sarcastic dig about sexy football was probably aimed at the fans who abused him (and I certainly don't defend the way they went about it), it's also disrespectful to the current regime and their attempt to revamp our style. You'd have got more sympathy, Mick, if you'd risen above this rather pathetic name calling. Thank you. Just move on. We'll do the same.

Oh once again how professional of you to talk about players who have nothing to do with you any longer. "I don't talk about players who are contracted to other clubs", I quote.
God what an ego you have. You two faced tw*t.
What a lack of ambition the Republic of Ireland have in appointing you.
It was so obvious that you wanted away the last time the job was on offer.
I guess this time no one else applied.
Such a geat manager how is that no club came in for you. 😂

So Bohslegend you never went to games???? Priceless and you question the loyalty of others! only people who went can have an opinion on the playing style! Had you ever been along and watched then you truly could have witnessed how this man was killing the club, dwindling crowds awful hoofball!

You Bohslegend are someone who follows the fortunes of ITFC, you are not a supporter, there is a big difference!

Therein61 I've read the article twice and at no stage can I see a players actual wages stated.
One thing is for sure our once great club is a lot worse off than when he left and this could just be the beginning of a lot worse still this is what you and all the know alls of the news site wished for enjoy.

Itfcsince73. Of course chambers is taking a pay cut, just like all the others. Ridiculous to say he isnt. But as ur so biased against him i wouldnt expect any different. No he hasnt played well this season. But then, who has? And there are mitigating circumstances. Would u be 100% at ur job if ur mother seriously ill? But he clearly wanted to play despite that.

When mad Mick got the tin tack he must have singed a contract to keep his mouth shut about ipswich matters.. Perhaps he thinks he can talk about this because he knows foxtrot Oscar about football.

Anyone that thinks McCarthy is talking about Ipswich out of choice is an idiot. He will be, being asked specific questions and giving an answer. Has no one seen a press conference before! Haha!
